I just returned home from a shopping trip in a large shopping mall (can’t say where as would be outing) - 😂 not really, it was Bluewater.

I just want to know why everyone is so hostile. I know this has been discussed before but is it really the post Covid bad attitude / no social skills or awareness.

I was making my way out of a changing room with a pram this morning and a mother and adult daughter blocked both aisles to leave the changing room and then glared at me. I waited for them to move as they seemed as though they were quite invested in being aggressively in the way/ I was a massive inconvenience for wanting to exit the changing room. Normally I would say ‘excuse me’ or ‘sorry’ (I know people hate this as why am I apologising for being alive) but today I thought - I’m not even going to speak. You know you’re in the way. You’re both glaring at me and instead of getting changed in the cubicle you’re in the gangway with open mouthed gormless stares.

In my experience people behaving like that is more and more common now.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

How do you know I’m shit at my job? Tell you what I’ll show my manager this thread and she can answer you, I’ve been told I’m one of the best workers there and no I’m not just saying that.
I repeat you don’t know me.

Hiptothisjive · 31/10/2025 15:32

So I disagree with standing there not saying anything and expecting them to move. They don’t know what you are going to do (in every situation). Excuse me works just fine. Or a sorry can I please just get past. It’s passive aggressive behaviour from both of you which is unfortunately rude.

To add I do get a choice, my manager removes people like you from her shop and tells them not to return, no way would she stand there allowing you to talk to me the way you do, well I wouldn’t let you either.

Toydrum · 31/10/2025 15:37

I can imagine some people who work behind the till (those that have an obsessive nature) on edge just waiting to pounce because they can’t shake off that someone at some time behaved badly so that means ALL customers are to be mistrusted. Lol. I know the kind, you can see them when you enter the shop.

I do feel sorry for those that work behind the till I admire them.

Toydrum · 31/10/2025 15:42

Obsession isn’t a good look. 😁

pinenuts75 · 31/10/2025 15:45

No obsession is awful see it everyday 😀

One thing that really got on my wick were rude customers saying that we were rude to them? They have no idea how rude they are. Found that insulting.

Loved to record what they said to us and play it back. If don’t react ashamed, embarrassed etc then they are just nasty people

@TenGreatFatSquirrels They certainly haven't been around for 20 years where I live. As I said, no self service tills on my local M&S in the clothing department , only in the food section. My local Lidl store has no self service tills. I don't mind them so much for small food purchases, but the faff of dealing with hangers, trying to fold clothes and get them into my own bag without proper counter space to work on is nothing but a faff.

Are you unable to take clothes off a hanger and put them in a bag? Do you not do laundry or ever move things from one place to another? You’re really making a mountain out of a molehill imo.

People who ‘can’t do’ self service are just putting barriers in their own minds I think (unless of course they have real incapacities like movement disabilities or poor vision, then I can understand). Like what do you mean you can’t scan a tag, take a hanger out of a jumper and then chuck said jumper in a bag and tap a card?

I think they just don’t want too, as they think it’s the assistants job, or they are just lazy.

ohtowinthelottery · 31/10/2025 17:18

@TenGreatFatSquirrels It's bad enough you being rude to me once, never mind repeating yourself 3 times.
I did not say that I couldn't do it - in fact i said I didn't mind self service for small food purchases. But when I'm buying clothing I want it folded properly, not just stuffed into the bag and to do that I want a proper counter. FWIW, when I do my laundry I have a worktop above my washing machine and dryer. I also don't have my handbag and other shopping bags in one hand!

Don’t say that on here you’re very brave 😂

JeannieJo · 31/10/2025 17:51

Yes, yes, yes and yes! I could write a list. It would fill pages. I am so sick of selfish, arrogant, rude, bullying, loud, aggressive, swearing, entitled and lazy people. I can’t even begin to describe what we have become as a nation. YANBU.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 31/10/2025 18:10

I think a lot of customers are rude.
I don’t work in retail but I had a customer tell my manager that I was rude to a relative of hers. I had to explain myself to my manager. I gave my version of events. When my manager contacted the customer asking specifically how I had been rude they backtracked. The one complaining wasn’t even there!
Turns out their relative was pissed off with THEM as they had been inconvenienced by having to mess about sorting out their affairs, so they decided to be a total twat about it and blame me for it. Instead if being an adult and telling their relative that next time, sort your own bloody affairs out.

I was served by an assistant in M&S who didn’t say please or thank you. She had a huge scowl on her face too. I know everyone had bad days but surely a thank you is expected when you buy something.

Had it too today in M&S, I’d left a bag behind and shop floor manager dealt with three people after me regarding queries, I was left standing like an idiot, thankfully young male employee dealt with me and brought it to me

So the poor manager had 4 people to please all at once?

Straycats · 31/10/2025 19:29

No, I’d waited patiently it was my turn, she dealt with a male customer after me, we spoke, then she went to another three customers.
Do you think that was s fair? I had been polite, pleasant to her.
You just don’t go off and ignore customers.
By the way the lad who did later on deal with me, I profusely thanked him.

Just sounds to me like the manager was feeling under pressure.

I think this is part of the problem, before there was CCTV that's clear and also can record sound, the assumption was always on the side of the customer, as in they were always treated as being reasonable and the staff unreasonable by default and that gave those who wanted to use it, some power over others.

That can now be disproved to some extent and I don't think some people like that. The CCTV or body cams will show what happened without bias, and will reveal if there was a 'tone', 'look', 'eye rolling', shopping, change or goods 'thrown' or cups/plates 'slammed' etc - all things that previously couldn't be disproved without basically making it worse by saying the customer is exaggerating or outright lying - it's right there on a screen. And the staff know they're there, so would indeed be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to be as has been described here and received a complaint, slam dunk as they say. The staff have far more to lose than a customer.

My manager always investigates complaints of rude staff, they do exist and it does happen, however here's a fair amount that argue furiously when they're told that the staff weren't out of order, that they the customer were aggressive, rude, nasty etc without provocation, and the staff aren't there to be treated that way and rightly refused service, funnily enough when they're offered the opportunity to review the CCTV for themselves, suddenly there's tumbleweed and this passion for "I don't want anyone else to be a victim the way I have!" Vanishes along with their complaint - because they know fine well how they behaved and that they were the one being unreasonable - but were banking on being blindly believed because they are a customer.

Will tell you this about a customer. This was ten minutes into my shift. I went to work at customer entrance 5-8 mins before I started.

I went in the kiosk to do a colleague’s break. This woman then screamed at me for waiting 40 mins to be served. She wasn’t in the queue, she stood to the side about 5m away and she wasn’t there when i entered the store. She was constantly screaming, shouting, throwing her arms in the air and using vile language. I called for a manager on the tannoy. I started to record her on the body cam due to her behaviour. Body cams record audio. CCTV doesn’t.

Three managers turned up. One heard the screaming. I mentioned to them she claimed she has been waiting for ‘40 mins’ and not in the queue. The managers made her to leave and banned her. She screamed at the wrong colleague.

Later on, one of the managers looked at the cctv and asked me to view it. I hate seeing myself on cctv. He showed me myself entering the store. She wasn’t there. Then fast forward to her entering the store. Manager said look at the time stamp from her standing where she was to her shouting. 35 seconds!

It’s too busy. That’s why people are rude. There are studies that when populations rise we become more competitive and selfish (presumably because subconsciously we think we have to fight for resources).

Flameup · 01/11/2025 06:27

Elfie111 · 31/10/2025 07:48

That would depend on your outlook on life wouldn’t it.

‘You see what you want to see’. Remember.

Best not to think in absolutes.

Have a wonderful day. You were up bright an early to spread joy on a forum so for that, I, and the whole of mumsnet thank and applaud you.

I will now refer you to the first comment of this thread. Read it twice.

Remember not to tell yourself stories.

You don’t want to get anything ‘lodged’ in your ‘subconscious’ as you so eloquently put it.

Also 84% of people who voted need to be more like you.

I can almost guarantee you’re reading this with a ‘gormless open mouthed stare’. Or. ‘Trust fund confidence, emotionally bankrupt’ is an accurate description of you. Or both. Or a variation. Best not to talk in absolutes.

This response would indicate that the OP is unhappy and pissed off about a lot in life.

Anyone who has such a bleak view that “everyone” is rude and “these days” no one gives a shit about…. Is going to be bleak about a great deal of things in life.

I see friends, family, colleagues…. My young adult kids and their partners and friends - and I see polite, thoughtful people.

Of course the odd rude person here and there. And this would have been the past in the past, “these days” and will be in the future.
