This horrific story just doesn't make the news. The ongoing slaughter of innocents appears to be largely ignored.

If you are unaware its Sudan and 2000 people slaughtered a few days ago.

No poll. Just posting to raise awareness of this tragedy.

Thank you, @Martymcfly24 . It does indeed.

MonetsLilac · 30/10/2025 11:39

I think I saw a report of Sophie's visit on Sky News.

Nestingbirds · 30/10/2025 11:41

Unspeakable, atrocious crimes.

Many people are reaching saturation, with so much awful news. It’s about timing. The cynic in me would think this was a ‘well timed’ atrocity by the perpetrators as there is only so much the world can take on.

I can only pray this will not continue. A coup of this kind will not end well.

Noodledog · 30/10/2025 11:42

Does anyone know what are the best charities working in Sudan for making a donation to?

coxesorangepippin · 30/10/2025 11:42

But instead the news is all Trump, Musk, hurricane in Jamaica (needed) and Israel.

Unfortunately I have to agree, the more horrifying, shocking and unspeakable the greater is the impulse to not think about it because it's too awful😔

WaryCrow · 30/10/2025 11:45

There have been stories about Sudan in the media quite regularly.

I can’t answer for what grabs the public conscience and awareness and becomes a ‘popular cause’ because Britain and the British are not what they were and the culture seems hopeless to me now.

But also hopeless is the question of what you want us to do about it op.

Even if we had the means to be the world’s policeman and send our armies in as peacekeepers, what then? What rules would you want them to abide by, what actions do you want them to take, what country do you want them to set up?

As well as the practical difficulties -there are still questions asked abput involvement in Yugoslavia on European soil - We are damned by the past colonialism and the way that hovers around the public consciousness. If we do anything we are inthe wrong in these other countries. If we don’t do anything we are inthe wrong. If we do anything there we are called evil colonial invaders. If we don’t do anything we are evil as well for the same reasons, for the same people… this is not rational behaviour from rational people. Which do they want?

WaryCrow · 30/10/2025 11:47

What is clear is that it is always men. Always always men. The most disgusting animal on the planet.

I donate to Trocaire and Concern as they are on the ground but they are both Irish charities so maybe others can post charities in their countries.

I wonder if there's an element of compassion fatigue for this? I'm 50 and have been aware there are problems in Sudan since I was a child. Nothing seems to have improved in that time. Have we chalked it up to 'you can't win them all' and given up on the basis that it's a waste of time and therefore should direct our energies somewhere that we feel there's more chance we might be able to do something?

Before anyone comes for me I'm not saying this is right or acceptable, I'm just wondering about the reasons.

This.
Sudan has been a basket-case for decades. Attention fatigue is the result.
It is not news in the sense that it is not "new". Yes, more events happen (truly horrendous and unspeakable events), but the overall picture is not new.

And yes, for some unfathomable reason, the 'not-news' from the Middle East does keep getting broadcast. Perhaps because the US is involved, and our media follows the US media?

I am too old and weary of "the news". Same old same old, decade after decade.
I turn the TV off.

HostaCentral · 30/10/2025 11:50

Unfortunately with Africa there is always a famine or genocide going on somewhere, and generally the public are immune after so many years of conflict. It's a fatigue. It's insurmountable. It's such a huge problem, on a huge continent. It's being going on for years, tens, or hundreds of years. Tribal and religious differences, a lack of respect for life. A lack of respect for women and children.

What is the solution? We have thrown money and aid at Africa for decades. Nothing changes.

Africa has to sort Africa out. Even the Chinese are now pulling out having invested in infrastructure and trade.

What is happening in Sudan isn't new though, it's a continuation of massacres and genocide dating back decades. It is so horrific, and I think a lot of us do just look away out of self preservation. I actually really admire Sophie Wessex for taking this work on, I couldn't do it. And the medical teams working with the victims are absolute heroes.

Wow I hadn’t seen this. Absolutely horrific 😓

YetiRosetti · 30/10/2025 11:53

Appalling. I cannot imagine what the people of Sudan are living through

FoxRedPuppy · 30/10/2025 11:53

There are articles on BBC, Telegraph, Sky news, The independent. That’s pretty widespread.

FoxRedPuppy · 30/10/2025 11:53

Oh and The Guardian.

Fishlegs · 30/10/2025 11:54

Ankleblisters · 30/10/2025 11:10

According to the website only about 400 people have done this yet, so please do add your voice. It only takes 30 seconds.

Thanks for this, I’ve sent a letter. It took less than a minute so please do consider doing this.

FoxRedPuppy · 30/10/2025 11:54

And nearly all those have previous articles too. Maybe people don’t look at that part of a newspaper, but it is being reported.

TripTrapTripTrapTrip · 30/10/2025 11:55

Several posts on this thread and the other would suggest that many of the people on MN expressing their outrage at this horror are only doing so in order to make a point in defence of Israel’s horrific actions. Which is very depressing.

JoyintheMorning · 30/10/2025 11:57

The Arab Islam forces have been working at removing African Christians from Sudan for years. It is a long held ambition of Islam. It is financed by Islamic Gulf States as was the Taliban.
There has been a 500 day siege on that last city, Unlimited food supplies for thousands of troops, weapons and ammunition and fuel for vehicles for the attackers. All from Saudi and it's neighbours. They regard these events as a triumph for Islam.
BBC Radio 4 World at One yesterday had a fairly long report about it. The filming of the murders by the terrorists and putting them on the Internet shows how proud they are of there achievements.

WaryCrow · 30/10/2025 12:02

Another reason why there is so much news from the Middle East is that the Middle East is very politically astute and active. There are large numbers of Middle East citizens here who have not given up their original culture, never came to view the west or to integrate, but to push their political goals here. They’ve been doing it for years, decades.

3gindown · 30/10/2025 12:02

MonetsLilac · 30/10/2025 11:21

Indeed. As George Clooney said to the UN about Darfur "this has been on your watch".

I think there’s a common misconception on the UN - writing this as a deployed Humanitarian aid worker for a large well known agency (not currently in Sudan though- splitting between Gaza and Yemen).

The entire way the UN is set up is pretty pointless in my opinion (and most of the sectors opinion really). They do not have the authority to intervene in a country unless that countries government makes a specific request for them to do so (and it has to be the international recognised government) - or, there has to be a vote in the security council under 2 specific charters where they could authorise a united military intervention - which is also completely pointless as the “permanent members” (all “global north” countries with differing views) can veto any vote, for any reason, and then it’s off the table even if every other member of the security council votes yes.

For example - there were multiple votes in the security council to intervene in the Syria crisis when it was at its worst, but it never went through because on the one hand you have UK / US / France and Germany voting “yes” to provide an intervention, but you have Russia who is also a permanent member and was supporting the Bashar regime, veto-ing the vote.

So in terms of actually “doing something” the UN system is really limited and pretty pointless in responding to active conflicts.

MonetsLilac · 30/10/2025 12:04

@3gindown , bearing in mind how and why it was set up, that's pretty depressing.
