Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Most current for me is Invisible thread by The Divine Comedy. Have cried every time I've heard it, including live at their concert a couple of weeks ago!! (My Mom had no one to go with, she's been a massive fan for about 30 years!) Ardal O'Hanlon is in the music video, which brings them "full circle" for me as the first of their songs I heard was the theme tune for Father Ted! (They also wrote the Father Ted Eurovision entry My Lovely Horse!)

I saw them last week in Glasgow. They were spectacular! The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is another beautiful track from their new album.

Years ago, maybe over 48 years, I was hanging washing on th line outside. Young adolescent child was listening to music inside.

they opened the window and asked me to listen to a son g.

it was Bobby Jean by Bruce Springsteen. I was crying by the end of it. Which said child knew I would be.

it still touches me, though I don't think it's the best he sang (that would be The River).
now who was it that said that it was odd how cheap music can move us so much?

Where is my mind - Pixies

A New England - Kirsty MacColl

Dinner at eight - Rufus Wainwright

Our mutual friend - Divine Comedy

More than this - Roxy Music

Coming up close - Til Tuesday. This was on a compilation tape given to me at 15 and long-lost. Took me years to track it down again. What a beautiful song.

Also the song in my user name 🙂

Ah yes! Our Mutual Friend and Dinner at Eight.

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah

Disturbed's version of The Sound of Silence

Instantly thought of Sound of Silence when I saw the headline.

I have so many and a lot of them have already been posted but my immediate standouts were:

The Night We Met - Lord Huron
Everglow - Coldplay
Wonderful Life - Hurts
Jealous - Labrinth
All the Little Lights - Passenger

Everglow always makes me cry. X

The opening riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit, echoing from a top floor window in halls in Sept 1991. Stopped me in my tracks.

I agree with this. It’s not that I loved the song as such, but the ‘sound world’ it brought about somehow heralded a whole new era.

Hard to beat the emotional intensity of James Blunt's "Monsters" (about his father dying), especially the video with him and his dad where JB is trying to hold it together. Not my kind of music usually but this is extraordinary.

Plus, the happy ending was that his dad miraculously got a kidney transplant and is still alive!!!

Edited

I'll Take Everything by James Blunt is also fantastic. It's in a really powerful opening scene of Law & Order SVU and I had to look it up immediately

Sinead O’Connor Nothing Compares 2 U. There’s a line in it that reminds me of my late mum and it always makes me feel emotional.
