Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

To t

To those saying why the barracks are a bad idea etc…. I wouldn’t want to live next to them either and I’m sure the majority of the population wouldn’t, however…. Currently thousands of people are feeling the effects of hundreds of men being put up in hotels up and down the country, hanging about in groups and particularly women and girls feeling intimidated. Two hotels where I live have been used, one for several years and of course it build resentment in the local community for several reasons.

I don’t see how this is any different to them being housed in barracks? At least with the barracks the money won’t be paid to private companies so it saves the tax payer.

Genuine question, because it seems like a simple solution do there must be a reason why its not been done.

Why cant a law be implemented where if you arrive on a small boat you automatically become ineligible for asylum? Full stop, no ifs no buts, just no, back to France. Cant they change the system so people have to apply and be approved outside the UK? Then come here once approved? Would that appease the Reform lot?

Its a genuine question because i dont understand why this isnt the first thing they are doing if they want to stop the boats?

That is the law currently. If you arrive by small boat your claim will not be granted.

Because people are desperate? Not the calculated connaiving individuals Reform would have you believe? Because not everyone is educated to the point of understanding the finer points of the Law in a country they don’t live in? Because we have obligations under an international law towards refugees and asylum seekers?

Do you mean Labour are not processing asylum claims anymore?

CorneliaCupp · 29/10/2025 10:56

The Illegal Migration Act 2023 (which became law on 20 July 2023) established that asylum claims will be treated as inadmissible if the person arrived in the UK “irregularly” (e.g., by small boat) and is covered by the duty to remove.

No I didn't. I said that the opinion of someone who works with immigration lawyers holds more weight than that of someone who gets their information from the media. I didn't mention you, nor was I thinking of you.

I think you are twisting words. You were responding to me so surely you were addressing me?

I assume they are. There are limited safe routes for Ukrainians etc, and some who will have come to the UK legally - on a student visa for example, and then claimed asylum, but I don't know for sure.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/10/2025 10:58

If it wasn’t so pathetic and obvious before I even googled who GMIAU are. They are there to aid immigration the clue is in their name…immigration aid unit

I don't think you were supposed to look up who they actually are, @marshmallowmix (!!) but a tenner says they'll also be into providing crib sheets as to the best stories to tell

I didn't even get beyond the first page before the lies started: "No one would choose to leave their country – we have been forced to leave because of war or persecution. You should know that everyone who arrived in Britain to apply for asylum carries deep sadness inside and has been forced to risk their life"

"No one" and "everyone"? I don't think so ...

I’m not sure you do, but this back and forward is detracting from the thread so I wish you good day. Sure you will want to have the last word but I won’t be responding.

I absolutely do. But since you will never believe me I can't see what else there is to be said.

I don't think that is true? People arriving by small boats continue to be granted asylum.

Since 2018, 95% of the people arriving in the UK on a small boat have claimed asylum. Of the 159,180 small boat arrivals claiming asylum since 2018, around three-fifths (61% or 96,831) had received a substantive decision (as of 16 July 2025, when the data used in this release was taken). Of these, 61,706 were granted asylum or some other protection status, and 35,125 were refused.

I’m not sure it’s correct? On googling we still are processing claims answer -

Yes, the UK is still processing asylum applications

It is true, came into law in 2023. Not sure how it works in practice, as the figures you've stated are true as well!

CorneliaCupp · 29/10/2025 11:04

The Illegal Migration Act changes the law so that those who arrive in the UK illegally will not be able to stay here and will instead be detained and then promptly removed, either to their home country or a safe third country.

100%, I wasn't supposed to Google them and see who they are.

Crib sheets and sob stories at the ready you are correct, pull the other one people have had enough.

Same I didn't bother reading beyond the first page as it is so badly written 😆

Yep I think you’re right there, Labour are processing asylum claims but other parts might be continuing.

nam3c4ang3 · 29/10/2025 11:12

I mean - it’s labour. I’m sure they’ll fuck it up somehow but don’t worry - we will pay for it with increase of tax - that is all Labour know how to do properly. Hooray! In the words of someone on Mumsnet who told me ‘give Labour a chance - they’ll change the UK’ - hopefully you still feel that way.

OctaveoOctober · 29/10/2025 11:15

If the majority are granted asylum we need to change the asslyum rules.

Surely as a nation we went to provide sanctuary for the truly vulnerable ?

I'm sorry but huge great strapping men fleeing war and leaving women and children are not my top priority .

We should be allowed to chose who we take and not have it foisted upon us.

Apologises if it's not true but apparently people are going back to Afghanistan for holidays.

In our country we don't understand many things; we have no idea how desperate many people are and the terrible restrictive regimes they lived under and we don't understand networks ,allegiances , culture , reference points that are a million light years away from our own that we can't assimilate or change.

https://gmiau.org/assets/uploads/2025/10/Greater-Manchester-Asylum-Hotels-Group-Our-response-to-the-protests-outside-hotels-A4.pdf

Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community.

This is 100% not written by a charity. It is definitely not saying leftist do-gooder. This is certainly the words of all illegal migrants. I believe it completely.

How many other serious assaults or worse took place in the UK yesterday? And what is the nationality of all those involved in those crimes?
