Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

But you are so much wanting to help!

Are you opting out of paying tax?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/10/2025 18:22

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 18:20

I am, my taxes pay for many thing in society.

How will you opt out?

No, you can opt in to pay additional tax to support the cause.

Simple.

Lots of reasons. It's a very dangerous trip to make, culturally young men are valued over women, and so would be the ones to make the trip, many families can only afford for one person to make the trip, so prioritise their sons, more humanitarian routes tend to prioritise women and children, so young men have less choices ...

…culturally young men are valued over women…

Yep, we definitely need more of that!

This is absolutely right. Yes - they shouldn’t be free to wander around until their application has been approved. It’s common sense really. If they’re unsuccessful it’s also easier to ensure they don’t just disappear.

On our local news tonight it was stated that they would be free to come and go.
Highland Council were not consulted about it at all but were told yesterday that it would be happening.

Who says I don't?

You said you don't want tax payers's money to go on asylum seekers, so besides suggesting I pay for it, how do you suggest we deal with asylum seekers?

Viviennemary · 28/10/2025 18:26

No I think being housed in barracks could be a deterrent rather than being housed in luxury in hotels. And out of the community where they are a threat.

I thought I did.

I suggested kindhearted Lady Bountifuls could take then in. But you didn't want them.

Oh sorry, you said you had no space.

I've just read that they are planning to house 300 men there. They will be free to come and go as they please. Madness.

They’re just moved to another community. Barracks may often be rural (not all) but there are still villages in walking distance. Bored large groups of men milling around very small villages.

im not saying that one community should have them over another btw but just that there’s always someone affected.

and the rural barracks near me when they were talking about using it there was talk of a free minibus shuttle bus service. I remember as a friend lives 50yds from the barracks and I laughed saying at least she could have a free bus into town!

And there is me thinking we had a serious discussion.

Which party do you think can solve the broken asylum system and stop the boats?

Is this a serious question? How does the good old taxpayer that coughs up for migrants and everything else with Labour’s spend, spend, spend policies “opt out of paying tax”?

Did the taxpayer not pay for migrants under the Tories?

The asylum hotel contracts were awarded in 2019
The Rwanda Plan

Did you protest as much then?

Yes. I have never been happy funding asylum seekers’ hotel expenses.
Any other questions?

The barracks in my area is 20 minutes walk into a little seaside town

i mean there would be fuck all anyone could do but as others have said the problem moves to another town

and reform would win this seat, guaranteed

Whammyammy · 28/10/2025 12:40

Have you not seen some of these prestigious buildings? And free if charge with mesks provided.
Sound cushy to me.

Google the cresta court. It’s near me and horrible. These migrants get £10 a day from the gov but can’t get jobs. They just walk around looking depressed and utterly bored.

JHound · 28/10/2025 19:02

ScholesPanda · 28/10/2025 15:00

Because they think it sounds more brutal and therefore will deter more from coming. Or at least make them happier that migrants are being brutalised.

Reform's proposals for a network of detention centres are even more expensive. But apparently people like them.

Madness.

Reform are going to have a landslide. The next election will be a one issue election. The nhs will be thrown under the bus. And god knows if Reform will actually be able to solve the problem or if they’ll just be full of hot air when in opposition like everyone else. Problem is by the time we find that out it’s too late. Will have Farage and a bunch of 19yos in charge for five years. God help us.

As I have answered all your questions and simply get more questions in return, let me ask you the same. Who do you think can stop the boats? Or do you not want them stopped?

ForestBath · 28/10/2025 13:55

So you'll be happy for the barracks to be used then?

I will be happy when people who come from other countries are speedily processed and allowed to work or, following due process, are deported. I have no issues with asylum seekers staying in hotels or barracks, providing value for money is offered to the tax payer and already billionaire individuals are not getting even more rich off offering substandard accommodation and poor quality food. Mainly, I want asylum seekers to be able to live without fear of the flag flying idiots currently standing outside the hotel housing asylum seekers in my town on a 24/7 basis.

The main reason that young men go is the family reunification scheme. Only the man needs to be be granted asylum then their family can come over on the plane. Starmer announced that would end at conference, whether it will or not is another matter. Every asylum seeker in a hotel represents a number of people coming to the UK.
