Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

Yep. Cameron Barracks in Inverness - right in the centre and close to schools.
Great idea.

The local MP seems furious at these plans. He has also spoken about how close the barracks are to housing and the centre etc. I'd be extremely worried if I lived nearby.

Yep it’s horrifying.

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 17:26

The Cameron Barracks were used before to house fighting age men.

AndThenAStepToTheRight · 28/10/2025 17:31

Sounds like a good idea to me

@CorneliaCuppwhen you say you’d like o/s applications and you’d deport anyone who arrives outside that, that is closer to the Aus system than the one we have.

They do do o/s applications and deport people who arrive on the coast. You’re describing what they do.

If we could have a more efficient system without the human rights abuses and without leaving people in limbo for years on end then I'm in!

OnlyOnAFriday · 28/10/2025 17:33

Talk about flip flopping. It was only a few months ago Labour intervened in an ex base near here and said migrants weren’t coming. This was after they’d spent money kitting it up. They’d even employed security guards and certainly advertised for staff to run it. But nobody ever came. It’s still empty and afaik up for sale. No idea if it will get commandeered again.

and the problem if any with it is that it’s out in the sticks. Was meant to house a couple of thousand men I think. Who are free to walk out the gates, there’s a few small villages in walking distance. What are people going to spend their days doing? Seems like an open prison in all but name!

The hotels are not ‘cushy’ but currently the public appears to falling for the bullshit that asylum seekers are living it up in 4* hotels with all the trappings.

Edited

You are wrong. Ok some are not that nice, but most are decent lovely hotels. Certainly luxury to those of us that could never afford it. Why do you not believe this?

And there is the 'trappings'. They are fed, clothed, free dental care, free medical treatment and more. I'm not saying they shouldn't have those things, I'm just pointing out the 'trappings'.

Comefromaway · 28/10/2025 17:35

Do you work inside these hotels or are you falling for the propaganda?

You can if you do what you said, you just need to deport people when they arrive as you proposed (and ignore international law).

HelenaWaiting · 28/10/2025 12:52

Can anyone explain under what law they must be housed? Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with migrants being given accommodation. I do have a problem with that imperative not applying to people who are already here. That is what is working in Reform's favour - ex-servicemen sleeping rough, but get off a boat and straight into accommodation.

Can you imagine the uproar if hundreds/thousands of aslylum seekers were sleeping rough in your town centre? In your street? Would you be happy with that? Stepping over them to get in your front door?

If they have no support or food what do you think they will have to do to eat seeing as they can’t work and earn a wage? Crime would rocket.

Hmmm and what about those who threw their documents into the sea and those whose "personal details" are nothing but fiction.

Agree with this and the fact I don’t think these countries necessarily have a robust DBS type scheme.

The whole thing is a mess. I don’t want genuine asylum seekers turned away but such genuine ones are surely a small percentage of the people who are coming here. I am fed up that so much money is being spent. I am worried about the small number of asylum seekers who are committing horrific crimes and making our communities less safe. I’m worried where this is all going to end as it seems to be spiralling. Labour do need to get a grip on this urgently but then the Tories didn’t either.

Whammyammy · 28/10/2025 17:53

Bumblebee72 · 28/10/2025 16:28

Quite. The typical labour voter is very good at spending other peoples money. Maybe people who have a council house will an extra bedroom could use it to house an asylum seeker.

That would be a fantastic idea. Wouldn't it be good if it happened

From what I can see, about half of people who claim asylum are granted it. For those who arrive by small boats, the rate is 66%.

Whatifitallgoesright · 28/10/2025 12:39

I thought the point of army barracks was so they could be securely contained. I assume they will be locked in there and not have minibuses laid on to deposit them at the nearest town to wander round at will all day.

This is absolutely right. Yes - they shouldn’t be free to wander around until their application has been approved. It’s common sense really. If they’re unsuccessful it’s also easier to ensure they don’t just disappear.

Id expect because they are long abandoned sites which will require renovation.

They are not long abandoned lol, I work at another army barracks camp (not Cameron Bks) and I can assure you they are very much being used every day by both soldiers and civvies. I’d be fuming if they moved migrants into my workplace.

TheLizardQueen · 28/10/2025 18:14

It’s such a shame that we can’t use the army barracks for ex vets and our own homeless.

What extra comforts are you thinking of?
You do realise that we are talking about traumatized people fleeing for their lives, not criminals?

Then why is it mostly young men? Where are their women and children?

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 18:20

TheLizardQueen · 28/10/2025 18:16

Then why is it mostly young men? Where are their women and children?

Lots of reasons. It's a very dangerous trip to make, culturally young men are valued over women, and so would be the ones to make the trip, many families can only afford for one person to make the trip, so prioritise their sons, more humanitarian routes tend to prioritise women and children, so young men have less choices ...
