£15bn on hotels?

wineandagoodbook · 27/10/2025 08:16

While Rachel Reeves is trying to find £10-£30 billion by more taxes, we are spending £15bn on hotels for asylum seekers, it beggars beyond belief

Bye bye NHS, worker's protection, environmental standards, maternity pay, abortion rights etc

Farage is the face of disaster capitalism. His billionaire backers will strip this country of anything of value, all while being cheered on by those who's lives he is damaging.

He'll be an absolute catastrophe

Absolute Bullshit. All the traditional parties have left now is to play the "change is too scary for you" card. It might help if Labour weren't driving the economy over a cliff, whilst misdirecting us to look at "the scary" thing in the distance.

It's not bullshit though is it. He's been vocal about going to an insurance based nhs. He's spoken at rallies that promote anti abortion views.

He's promised tax cuts that are completely unfunded. Much like Truss did. Do you remember what that did to the economy.

You might like him cos of his anti immigration rhetoric, but government is way more than managing immigration. And from what he has said, it'll be disastrous for the UK

He's is not going to make your life any better at all.

Half a million net immigration a year under Labour adding the city the size of Leeds to the population each year.

Yippeee

The reason Labour are keen on immigration is that those are all people to pick up the slack in the economy enabling them to keep their voters at home on the benefits drip. God forbid that they have to tackle the problem of getting people into work.

Anyahyacinth · 27/10/2025 16:02

This is about the price of contracts negotiated by our politicians ..not about money spent on vulnerable people….its another version of the PPE contracts …money to huge corporations …that’s the issue

Labour hiking taxes, even though they said they wouldn’t pre GE, won’t help.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/10/2025 16:06

Has Farage actually said how he will stop the boats? I know he's said it will be better when we leave ECHR but actually only 14 deportations have been prevented by using that. Definitely not worth giving up Human Rights for.
So what is the plan then? A barricade across the Channel, the Navy shooting at dinghies, these are not my suggestions obviously but I have seen them made by rabid reform supporters.

We'll we only have a few weeks before we find out how much worse this government is going to make our lives in their next round of record breaking tax rises. I'd rather give Reform a go than this bunch. Farage may not have given a fully funded plan for the election in three years but Reeves hasn't given a fully funded plan for her "budget" in three weeks. I think she just has one of those wheel of fortune things in her office and night before she will use it to choose between VAT, Income Tax or NI.

Labour hiking taxes twice so far..... Plus they have borrowed against future growth, which they then stopped, so it won't be the end of it, There will be more in 2026, and 2027 when the gambling fails

What do you think the government should do then? Leave asylum seekers on the beach?

Could we not keep them in camps of dormitories behind barbed wire fences. Feed them on chick peas and chicken.900Calories a day. Give them the raw food, they cook it for themselves. It would keep them busy.

Send them back if they have in fact come from a safe country France.

Labour are looking at barracks. That won’t help either.

JoyintheMorning · 27/10/2025 16:19

Barracks or Nissen huts Keep them contained. That will reduce the attraction of UK.
Denmark solved their problem. We could solve ours.
@EasternStandard Why wont it work?

Bumblebee72 · 27/10/2025 16:30

Maybe every Labour voter who wants the population increase should be forced to let a aslyum seeker have a bed in their house.

ruffler45 · 27/10/2025 16:31

The government seems to have a history of struggling to write contracts that their contractors are not able to walk all over and make lots of money.

Lack of legal/commercial experience compared with the contractors?

Old contractural adage, time? cost? quality? you cant have all 3...

I did initially think your post was sarcasm I admit but since it’s not I don’t think housing in barracks will change much in terms of attractiveness. A shorter time waiting but still with accommodation, healthcare and schooling if needed is much more than a camp elsewhere.

zupro · 27/10/2025 16:35

No.

How does any gov actually stop it? And how much will it cost?

A lot of then are now in coastal towns living in four star hotels, so I guess we have at least given them a beach view.

There are huge logistical challenges with using large, securely contained sites like barracks.

For one, we don't have lots of sites like that in a usable condition sitting, well, unused. To bring an abandoned complex up to scratch is a huge outlay. Secondly, they tend to be surprisingly low-density accommodation given the size of the site and are therefore not very efficient. Thirdly, it is logistically more costly to supply and maintain these sites and they are not always easy to access for e.g. court visits.

The use of hotels has arisen because these buildings are in good condition, provide a high density of accommodation, are usually in central areas where it's easy to supply catering, security, get the residents to court, doctors appts etc, and because there have been an awful lot of hotels closing in recent years these buildings are quite commonly available on the open market and are cheap for what they are.

Not quite - they're living in a building which used to be a four-star hotel. I assure you, you wouldn't consider it a four-star experience if you stayed there.

Many hotels were repurposed away from customers because of the juicy government contracts. Just more rich people getting richer at the expense of the everyday person trying to afford to live. Disgusting.

Yes, they get repurposed because the owners aren't turning a decent enough profit serving tourists like they used to. COVID and the cost of living has really put the pinch on hotel owners and tourism more widely. If you're the owner of a failing beach hotel in the UK and you're offered a contract for tens of thousands a year with minimal input, you'd take it too.

Nonsense. Free healthcare, free food, free accommodation, access to entertainment and amenities. I queued up behind a refugee in a hospital recently and it was a debacle. Couldn’t speak English, didn’t have any paperwork at all, had no money, no documentation. When the pharmacist tried to make any traction at all he just stood there with his hand out and she said ‘just give him what he wants’. If that didn’t sum up this broken system I don’t know what did. The silence in the waiting room was palpable. People are absolutely sick of it.

Of course you bloody would. Being ploughed into a COL crisis by decades of incompetent governments is a disgrace and now we have another lot of idiots in charge. This lot seen to be the worst of all though as they are convinced they are the good guys 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. Lord help us.

In the last 15 years, the Tories have been in power for 14 of them

Just because Reform hasn't ever been in power it doesn't mean they'll be any good.

Well they’re making the right noises that the majority of the population seem to want.

Free healthcare - you get that too. The difference is that they can't make NI payments since they're not allowed to work.

Free food and accomodation - well yes they kind of have to get that since, again, they're not allowed to work.

Access to entertainment and amenities - again, we all have that too. They just have a max budget of £49 / week to spend on everything that isn't food / accommodation.

she said ‘just give him what he wants How exactly did she know what he wanted if he spoke no English, had no paperwork or documentation?
