This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

The sanctimony on this post is something else.

Unless you’re a vegan who doesn’t have children, never gets on a plane, doesn’t drive, never buys anything that was created in its entirety in the UK and doesn’t eat anything that wasn’t grown in the UK, then you have got sod all rights to be asking anyone else to moderate their shopping because you think they don’t really need to buy a cheap top because it’s bad for the environment.

DoNoTakeNo · 25/10/2025 23:40

Is this addressed to me?
You have no idea of my life, just as I have no clue of yours.
As you raise the subject, we can both be pretty sure that we’re significantly more privileged than those involved in the production of much of the inventory of Temu & Shein.

I think you'd be better off just growing your own veg and dressing in sackcloth. I hope there are no electronics in your house and God forbid if you wear a diamond ring.

Don't fly anywhere
Don't eat anything
Sell your car
Give up your phone
Quit your unhealthy mumsnet habit.

Etsy has a huge range of price points.

Vinted is cheap as chips 😂 I sold a t-shirt on there today for £1.50. How much cheaper do you want???

I don't buy anything off Etsy without checking AliExpress for the item these days. Loads of stuff on there is from China with a huge mark up.

Digdongdoo · 26/10/2025 06:33

Seagullstopitnow · 25/10/2025 23:20

I work in import and supply chain.
That's how I know.

Must be able to point to plenty of evidence then.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 22:11

But you are assuming people buying from these sites are buying masses of stuff. Most people on low incomes are buying far less than those with more money.

Shein's average shopper spends $100 A MONTH on clothes through the site. That is a lot of poorly made, straight to landfill shite. And obviously average means that many people are buying a lot more.

And here we go again with the nonsense about unless you are living in a cave then you have no room to comment.

Isn't it obvious that being a meat-eater who flies a couple of times a year who buys at Shein/Temu is worse than being the same person who doesn't? It's hardly a big imposition to suggest that you don't shop at Temu or Shein.

It's not just about the environmental consequences either like the flights to bring all this stuff over to the UK or the pollution caused by creating it. It;s also about ripping off designers, lack of safety standards, slave labour, data harvesting from the sites, the cost of disposing of all this stuff people are buying, loss of UK retailing jobs etc etc etc.

Pickledpoppetpickle · 26/10/2025 07:35

Don't be so disingenuous. A £1.50 t-shirt on Vinted has an additional insurance cost and postage cost. That'll be about £4.50 in total, give or take. I buy new on Vinted and get some fantastic bargains - my all in price for dresses is about £15. Regularly get new with tags from Joules, White Stuff, Twisted Wunder etc for that. But not worth £4.50 for a second hand tshirt.

OlivePeer · 26/10/2025 07:36

The argument that unless you do everything perfectly, you can't have an opinion on what other people do makes absolutely no sense. It's not 0 or 1. Trying to do better is still better than not trying at all. Not caring about slavery and the impacts on endangered animals and smugly hoping that people buy "more and more" or should do whatever they want for "temporary joy" is plainly much, much worse than buying fewer things, secondhand, and trying to get them from more ethical supply chains, even if the results of that aren't perfect. It's basically impossible to live totally ethically in the world we have now, but there's still a huge difference between trying and caring, and glorying in contributing to the bad in the world.

I keep seeing Temu reminders on this site, and going back to add more to my latest cart. Got one parcel out for delivery, placing another one tomorrow. Love getting the plastic bags and opening them, it's like mini Christmas when they arrive.

Same stuff as Amazon, but cheaper. Love it.

Urgh.

OlivePeer · 26/10/2025 07:48

I find it genuinely hard to believe (not as a figure of speech) that people don't care about the suffering of those in slavery or endangered animals, so what drives the "I love plastic, give me everything from Temu" attitude? Is it a kind of internal bravado/denial to avoid having to feel any guilt? Where if you say it enough you might start to believe it?

Nah, nothing internalised love. I just don't give a single fuck about Temu. No fucks given. I recognise that nearly every single thing YOU do, and everything your wannabe ethically superior brigade do every single day helps nobody at all and instead contributes to fucking a completely unfixable world, and that nothing YOU do or I do or anybody else from the masses does matters even remotely, and so instead of morosely and whinily virtue signalling and lashing myself with a cat o nine tails and changing nothing at all - literally not a single thing - I live my life and am happy.

Sick of being lectured, nothing matters, I do what I want. That's all of it.

It's fucking awesome. And nothing you say, nothing at all, will stop me.

I just added two crystal lotus candle holders to my cart, in honour of you. You're welcome.

ToffeePennie · 26/10/2025 07:56

Well when the wooden tea set I got off Temu for £2.50 for my goddaughter, showed up in an Amazon box, with Amazon labelling and shipping from our usual Amazon courier, no.
Even more so when the £2.50 toy off Temu costs £14.99 off Amazon and it’s the exact same thing…

The comment about the unfixable world - how did you stop caring? I'm genuinely asking. How did you turn off the bit of you that cares when you see a picture of a sea creature choked by plastic or the conditions of the factories?

This.

or you go into TK MAX and find their home decor stuff can often be exactly the same as on the shein website.

I highly recommend watching the episode of The Good Place where they figure out why nobody has gone to heaven for hundreds of years. Because every single thing everyone does fucks something up. Buy a tomato in the grocery store, contribute to world famine, butyan organic egg, kill a kid somewhere.

Nothing matters, nothing changes, your politicians are doing whatever the fuck they want in their gigantic cars and aeroplanes and by the way China pumps out more pollution in 12 DAYS than Australia does in a year.

You are wasting your lives wailing and trying to virtue signal and being kept in a state of permanent guilt and confusion and are helping absolutely nobody at all.

It's wonderful to let go fo the desire to be a virtue signalling pompous arse, and just live your life and be happy while you can

Can't wait for plastic straws to make a huge come back and am very much looking forward to my next Temu parcel, love that it's in plastic, so easy to open and get rid of and light and convenient for delivery. 💅😇😍

Nothing YOU do for the environment/slavery/etc matters. Nothing. You have helped nobody. You are doing no good. You are not making any contribution to the world any more than I am. Your politicians are lying to you as they fly around the world guzzling champagne and oysters and giving zero fucks about you.

Give the beggar on the street a pound as you go past and be nice to your mum. That will make FAR FAR FAR more of a positive impact than spending your life pointlessly following useless demands from your overlords.

There is one difference between you and I when it comes to saving the world - I am no longer living a guilt ridden confused and pointlessly miserable life. I'm enjoying what I can while I can. And I will keep doing it.

Why do you think China pumps out so much pollution in comparison to other nations?

But I can't not feel bad when I see a picture of the suffering caused - especially the animals. I try not to seek them out but they just appear sometimes on the news, adverts and so on. It's not a choice made in order to be "virtue signalling", it's feeling genuine emotion.

You're doing an awful lot of patting yourself on the back for someone who is "no longer guilt ridden"... so many walls of text defending yourself for something you supposedly don't think needs defending...

Who cares? There is literally nothing that you can do about it. It won't stop.

I just added some Christmas napkins to my Temu cart.

There's another wall of text. You even responded to your own wall of text with another wall of text. You obviously do feel guilty deep down. Not the behavior of someone who really doesn't care.
