This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

What about you writing to Trading Standards (or whoever oversees imports) to ask if they guarantee that imports from such companies meet safety standards and requirements.

They don't.

That's the problem with these imports.

Swashbuckles · 25/10/2025 18:21

Can you find me a brand that sells similar clothes whose morals are squeaky clean? Preferably who i dont have to travel to the other end of the country to visit?

That’s just lazy thinking. People who argue that unless you are prepared to weave your own clothes from nettles then there’s no point even trying.

Or that all brands are as bad as plastic shit made in China, 99% of which is crap which nobody needs.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 25/10/2025 18:26

Not a chance. I love Temu.

Well then, that's not the fault of the purchaser is it? I am not one bit surprised that checks and authorisations don't occur. But at the same time I can't bring cheese home from France.

Blame Brexit I suppose. Yawn.....

It is if the purchaser knows they're buying something which presents a considerable risk to themselves and their children! That's just plain stupidity in the name of greed.

Brexit has nothing to do with this, as Temu and Shein are in China, which is outside the EU.

RampantIvy · 25/10/2025 18:28

I have never bought from them and never will.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 25/10/2025 18:28

I fucking hate hearing about all the shite people insist they need to buy from Temu. No, you fucking don't.

ThatsCute · 25/10/2025 18:30

Trading Standards only has authority over shops, not Online Marketplaces (Amazon, Temu, eBay, etc).

Depressing. People think they have the right to endless piles of shit for their children, made by enslaved people or children. I hate what Christmas has been turned into with the hauls and piles of tat and “cute bits”. Fuck the planet, fuck sustainability, I want I want I want.

This.

LittleCarrot12 · 25/10/2025 18:19

Temu order delivered yesterday and ordered Shein last night. The UK is ridiculously expensive and I need to live

Did you really buy things you couldn't live without?

TheGoddessAthena · 25/10/2025 18:32

DulceDeLecheDelish · 25/10/2025 18:23

I presume only the desperate still
buy there. I wouldn’t dream of telling people in that situation what to do.

No, it’s also the “new outfit for every occasion” people, the “ewwwww second hand” people, the people who are influenced by influencers and various others who just don’t care and think it’s all someone else’s problem to fix.

bluebettyy · 25/10/2025 18:32

I did a temu order recently and most of the clothes were shiny polyester crap so I’ve had to return them.

ThePoshUns · 25/10/2025 18:33

I’ve never bought from either never will.

Wonderful. They'll go to landfill or be incinerated FYI.

Surely nobody would get joy from that stuff unless they had no other option…

Edited

The Brexit reference was about not being allowed to bring food to or from EU. You know, the place with great safety standards for food and goods. But I can order from China no bother.

That's where the problem lies, not with people buying the stuff.

me neither.

TardisDweller · 25/10/2025 18:37

I do agree, a lot of the products don't pass the UK safety checks, particularly in terms of chemicals and flammability. You could potentially invalidate your house insurance too I would think.

People on a very tight budget can buy a fair bit from Shein and Temu for Christmas and not break the bank. Respectfully, until you're paying their bills, you should probably keep your opinions on how and where they spend their money to yourself.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 18:39

I use Shein and Temu. Money is really tight and that is what I can afford.
I don’t have children, mine are all adults, and would probably avoid for toys but gadgets and gizmos, clothes, advent calendars, stocking fillers are fine from there. I probably wouldn’t buy beauty bits.
The link with child labour goes bother me but in an ideal world I’d have enough money to buy ethically locally sourced products. But I don’t.

The problem DOES lie with people buying the stuff, because they're the ones importing it into the country.

Saying "oh it wasn't my fault" isn't going to help your kid when they're choking on a loose bit of toy.

A Fair bit of plastic shit? Stocking fillers nobody needs or wants? Endless gadgets and gizmos fun for 5 minutes then in the bin?

OP people here don’t care. They just don’t. They want to buy endless tat. For ever cheaper prices. Shameless. Makes me sick and YANBU. BUT PEOPLE ARE DUMB AND SELFISH.
