This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

It’s always the same people virtue signalling and telling those with less money how to live.

The same out of touch, hard of thinking with their luxury beliefs. Telling people buy only from local farm shops even it means they consume less. Not buy online etc.

It’s great to see people buying as much they can afford and being able to enjoy the things that these virtue signallers don’t want others to enjoy. I hope people buy more and more.

The hilarious thing is, that some of them believe that buying from a "reputable UK company" means that it's not the same old cheap crap churned out by shein and temu.
A lot of it is.

I don't know if English isn't your first language, but you're either deliberately misunderstanding my posts or you're not understanding them.

This conversation is becoming circular and I'm not going to keep repeating myself, so I will simply refer you back to what I've already posted.

If you're happy to knowingly use slave labour to get your cheap merchandise, then we're never going to see eye to eye.

Whether English is or isn’t my first language, I can still spot hypocrisy a mile off. Unfortunately, what you posted points towards your entire premise being no more than a virtue signalling exercise.

Is it? How do you know it's the same stuff?

BedlingtonFloof · 25/10/2025 23:01

It’s not the same though, is it? She’s not giving the companies that use slave labour any of her money.

How do you know? Even the poster herself accepts that she is not guaranteed to avoid buying things linked to Chinese supply chains.

I’m talking about the used stuff. Even if she knowingly buys a used top from Shein, for example, she’s not giving Shein any of her money, is she?

Oh dear, that’s not how the economy works. Even the circular economy.

This is a tad embarrassing.

Okay explain it to me? Surely buying used and not directly adding to Shein’s profits is better than buying from them?

I doubt many people are actually buying Shein stuff used anyway. It has practically no resale value.

Whether you buy new or you buy second hand, the product is still in use. And you just re imbursed part of the value back to the original buyer who supposedly paid for slave Labour.

But second hand is not the point. What no one has been able to articulate is that how are they servicing the morals and principles by guaranteeing they don’t buy anything linked with Chinese supply chains. Maybe some morally superior being will come along and explain how that have managed to achieve this feat.

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 23:16

Yes but surely reusing a product is better than not and not contributing directly to Shein is better than doing so? Also you can’t really resell Shein (they can’t give it away for a quid a pop at my local charity shops) so I don’t understand how the value is reimbursed? But I’d genuinely like to know if you have an answer.

I’m not one of these people who berates others for buying from these suppliers btw.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 25/10/2025 23:17

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 22:22

But why would a top from Shein be more likely to end up in landfill than a top from Next?
Or a manicure kit from Temu be more likely to end up in landfill than one from Boots?

Because it's more likely to be poorly made tat and get thrown away after a few uses.

Edited

I have already explained. But if buying second hand from Shein is not a thing, then why Labour the point.

The point is that some posters on this thread want to take the moral high ground but can’t explain how they are avoiding doing the same as they want others to stop doing.

But I buy from there and the clothes have lasted ages. I’ve not thrown anything out from Shein yet. Ditto Temu.

WhippetsForever · 25/10/2025 23:20

I've never bought from either (for the multitude of environmental, ethical and safety reasons given by pp) and I absolutely judge anyone who does

Seagullstopitnow · 25/10/2025 23:20

Digdongdoo · 25/10/2025 23:05

I work in import and supply chain.
That's how I know.

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 25/10/2025 23:24

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 21:57

And, so what!? You know, it's OK for people to just want things that might bring them a little joy!? For however momentarily that may be...

On that basis, it's also OK for men to have sex with trafficked women.

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 23:26

ChickpeasOnEarth · 25/10/2025 22:39

Because cheaper shite from Shein and Temu probably won't last as long.
Or the people who buy it are more likely to throw it away and just buy another manicure kit the next Christmas, knowing they can get another cheap one as a present.
I honestly don't understand how people can care so little about the planet and the slavery that we are paying for.

Because cheaper shite from Shein and Temu probably won't last as long.

You literally do not know this to be true at all. I bought a bright green shorts/tee co-ord from Shein. Washed it for the first time with a Colour Catcher in the drum... ZERO colour loss/run and the Colour Catcher was still white.

Conversely, I've paid way more for other items that have literally dyed entire washes! So it's not fair to Shein items dont last.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 23:31

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 25/10/2025 23:24

On that basis, it's also OK for men to have sex with trafficked women.

But nobody is saying it’s ok to use slaves or child labour.
But if you are on a very low income and can get an item you need for £1 on one of those sites, or £5 elsewhere, of course you will end up going for the cheaper version.
This is the reality for some people.
I needed clothes this summer. I spent £20 on Shein for 6 items. I wouldn’t have even been able to buy one probably in Next for example.

That's quite some leap you've made there. We're talking specifically about buying products from Shein. That's an entirely separate conversation.

Exactly this! It's pointless trying to make people try and understand. They will never get it.

Something tells me you have the budget to shop elsewhere. Not everyone has that choice. Morals are easier when you have money in your bank account. Stop deluding yourself that more ‘acceptable’ places to shop have much better ethics. They are often all too similar. I often find this sort of post rather superior, patronising and slightly racist and completely lacking in understanding of what it is like to have a very limited budget and trying to get by in life.

Is this addressed to me?
You have no idea of my life, just as I have no clue of yours.
As you raise the subject, we can both be pretty sure that we’re significantly more privileged than those involved in the production of much of the inventory of Temu & Shein.

I suspect OP is offering up financial assistance and donations to those who can’t afford to shop organic, handmade, locally sourced products like she does.

OP, do you want bank details sent to you for bank transfers or do you prefer gofundme pages?

Just share them here & then all of us rich folk can transfer some of our spare thousands to you.

Good, at least you accept your motivations are nothing more than virtue signalling. Thought as much.
