To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

How is it possible to listen objectively if you actively dislike someone? You don’t have to like the album by the way. It’s great to hear all opinions. So much more interesting to hear people diss the album rather than LA herself.

Edited

It was quite easy actually, I listened to the album and thought about whether I liked the music on it or not.

It’s possible to actively dislike an artist for whatever reason and think that they have some good songs or have put out a good album, even if it’s not your personal taste. I can think of dozens of examples.

This album though, in my opinion, is getting the hype that it is because of the information it’s revealed about her marriage - the content is tabloid gold isn’t it? The press can run stories for months off of what’s come out of the album. A lot of people will probably relate to the lyrics about discovering an affair and the emotions it stirs up which is why I think it’s struck such a chord for some. Musically though, I just don’t think it’s incredible, and I think she’s released much better stuff in the past.

She loves Pulp & The Streets re: song writing. Jarvis the master here.

This is what it reminds me of

No - people also like the album because of good songwriting, catchy tunes, and the fact that they can relate to a lot of it. I was watching the visualisers to her new album on YouTube yesterday and there are 100s of comments that suggest the above. People do actually like her music and these songs. I wouldn’t be surprised if she wins awards.

Karma as she cheated on her 1st husband.

I really hope she does win awards. She deserves it.

I'm convinced you are related to LA at this point. Her number 1 fan.
She is an awful person, her DC deserve better, they don't need school friends and their parents knowing about their mothers use of sex workers, her seedy relationships or her list of abortions.
She talks about the damage her parents caused yet she's continuing that circle of overexposure.

She will always have fans, but in terms of success and this album, 100s of comments on YouTube are meaningless. The test will be over the next few months or two to see if her tour is a sell out.

You are arguing for the sake of it here, lol, medical advise is based on facts!

It is far more safe to use contraception than undergo multiple operations, easier too. Anesthesia risks alone are a real thing and not something to put yourself through lightly, esp when so easily avoidable.

Edited

Did she say she’d had operations? I thought the majority of abortions were early stage using medication.

Why do you get to know that personal information? So you can judge her further?

piscofrisco · 01/11/2025 07:38

I think she was quite badly affected by her childhood and it’s led her to poor mental
health and to make some poor choices because of that. Her now ex husband is one of those choices. She is talented I think. And I’ve always liked her style (I loved her wedding dress-the short one-was it Chanel or Dior-can’t remember but it was fabulous). I suspect she might not be an especially nice person. She comes across as arrogant but fragile beneath the surface which is hard work. My view is clouded by the fact that I don’t like her pal Miquita at all-she was incredibly rude to me in a pub in west London once and I’ve took agin her ever since. (I’m not sure either Lily or Miquita are lying awake at night worrying about my opinion of them, mind)

Serpentstooth · 01/11/2025 07:49

The biter bit. Entitlement meets Entitlement.if you've had a few relationships in which you feel your chosen man has treated you badly, it's time to look at yourself. Only you can change it.

Critical acclaim from respected professional music critics is not meaningless however.

I did a quick check and it has garnered 5 and 4 star reviews from the Telegraph, the Guardian and The Independent. Variety says it should be Album of the year. (The FT gave it 2 stars however).

She should be feeling g pretty good. Well done Lily! And no I don’t know her, am not even a fan. Just read a couple of reviews and gave it a listen with low expectation and found it compelling.

You’ve misunderstood - the person I was replying to was saying abortion shouldn’t be used as contraception due to the risks of anaesthesia etc, so I was just saying that most abortions don’t involve anaesthesia.

No, nice try, he is as scummy as her. Abusing women's bodies because they can afford it. A pair of weirdo's.
Why was he out with her DD's daughters this week?? Strange.

Goldenbear · 01/11/2025 15:07

WeeGeeBored · 31/10/2025 00:17

I take your point but I find it a bit annoying as I would love to hear from people who listened to the album and hear what they think about it. Sadly the thread has become a castigation of Allen and I personally find it awful that a woman who was abused and damaged when young and who overcame the consequences of that through her talent is treated like that on a forum dominated by women.

And for those who hate her for the abortions I think the poor woman has been punished enough by giving birth to a stillborn.

But hang on, she has all her personal issues dragged out in public via this album? Equally, she revealed the 'encounter' with Liam Gallagher in her Memoir, why be so public with your personal life if you don't like the attention or judgement it's going to naturally encourage?

Ohhh, juicy about Miquita!? And unsurprising 🙈
The wedding dress was Dior I think and totally gorgeous - those photos are weirdly burned into my brain!

I certainly will be looking at Hopper differently! 🤨 will need to mentally separate them to still enjoy it 😅

Have been rewatching it with my daughter and every time he's on screen she sings 'am I looking at a sex addict, sex addict' and it's kinda ruined hopper for me 😂

Both miquita and Lily openly chat about how much of a bitch miquita can be… to lily too

Never had any opinions about LA before this ( still don’t never listened to the podcast and haven’t read her biography) but I think the album is brilliant actually.
