To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

You did change your tune. At one point you said you wouldn't expend such time and energy on demanding "compassion and understanding" for a male punter and then back tracked on that.

"messy lives" and "making mistakes". Oh dear, yes could happen to all of us really - "oops, I was a bit bored and I just ordered up a prostitute by mistake. Oh silly me"

I prefer to expend compassion and understanding on the women who are used by rich spoilt brats like Allen and Andrew Windsor.

I didn't backtrack though, I just said I wouldn't extend the same amount of understanding to male users of prostitutes. Do I really have to state that I think prostitution is always a Bad Thing? I would have thought that was obvious

fortinbra · 27/10/2025 18:33

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I do find your reactions to my posts bizarrely rigid and over the top. Things are complex, life is complex, people are complex - this is my point

It's an amazing album. Yes, Lily Allen is messy. I'm probably the most socially conservative person I know, I doubt I would agree with all sorts of things she has done, but she has a lot of courage to be that vulnerable. Lovely voice, too. I just feel sad for all of them really.

Pretty much this

DarkFruitcake · 27/10/2025 18:39

@AngeloMysterioso I thought you might be exaggerating a bit, but just finished listening to it and bloody hell, she really didn't hold back! Fuck you DB indeed 🤣
That phone call at the end of the first song - the pain in her voice got me right in the feels. I wouldn't want to be their divorce lawyer.

You did backtrack. I asked "Does that apply to male punters or just Lily Allen?" [ie treat them with " compassion and understanding" about their use of prostitutes] and you replied "yes it does"

As for Do I really have to state that I think prostitution is always a Bad Thing? I would have thought that was obvious -

You appear to think there are nasty punters - presumably the Andrew Windsor type and "damaged, self - loathing, making a cry for help" punters.
It's a distinction not worth making.

I find your attempts to minimise Allen"s use of prostitutes utterly bizarre. Why are you so invested in doing so?

Especially from someone who claims to support Julie Bindel's stance on prostitution.

Erm, I'm not? I think Lily Allen did a bad thing. I just view it slightly differently to the issue of male punters. I'm not saying it's ok 🙄

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle The fact you've been through all my past posts on MN is quite intense 😑

I thought this thread was about Lily Allen’s new album not discussion of the ethics of prostitution and selling organs 😳😳😳

That’s what great art does, opens you to a world of ideas ; )

Me too 😬

had a listen, I like some of her songs but it’s just sounded very basic Taylor esque and she is still singing in her false south London accent I thought she had lost this

fortinbra · 27/10/2025 21:36

Finally listened to the whole album. Wow. Go Lily!

That's actually the first time you've said that - so far all you've banged on about is that it was a cry for help and other drivel about only a damaged woman would do that. You don't seem to have any interest in the women she exploited.

I don't really see that much difference between her and Andrew Windsor both very wealthy and in positions of power, both think they can buy bodies.

The false accent has always grated on me and I think it’s probably the origin of my initial distaste for her. She loves to pretend she’s from a council estate

fortinbra · 27/10/2025 21:49

I found the album quite heartbreaking actually, but I'm glad she's well and truly got her own back on him.

It isn’t pretence, she did grow up in council flats. That being said, she doesn’t drop her t’s when she talks so I don’t know why she does it when she sings.

Yeah apparently she did for a bit. She was also privately educated with wealthy, middle class, famous parents. Quite different to most kids brought up on council estates.
Like you say, she doesn’t speak like that. It’s completely fake. I don’t know why she does it either - to appear more edgy? I always assumed it was to project the working class persona she tried to project when her first album came out.

AngeloMysterioso · 27/10/2025 23:57

I mean, I was privately educated and also raised in a council house by a single mum who had no money. The two aren’t mutually exclusive… and being expelled from one boarding school after another after another does not an idyllic childhood make

SwingTheMonkey · 28/10/2025 04:03

It’s so disingenuous to suggest LA grew up on council estates. She may have spent her very early years on one - still not sure about that, but her mother soon got into a relationship and moved in with Harry Enfield, who was at the top of his career at the time so I can’t imagine would be living on a N London estate. She attended multiple prestigious boarding schools. Nobody could argue her life was easy - growing up with Keith Allen as a dad must have been
shit but working class she was not. The accent was and is an affectation.

I don’t think it’s the average council estate kid’s experience to go to Prep school though is it? Not saying it’s impossible but it’s unusual. Those types of opportunities are rarely open to kids who grow up on estates to parents who are just trying to make ends meet.
