Do you or know anyone who buys entire new Christmas decs and other stuff each year

Proud to say my tree n decs are 16 years old. Will not buy a new tree unless it’s looks threadbare or gets lopsided.

People who buy everything new every year have got more money than sense. Stop following trends, stop trying to compete on SM.

Well I know someone who pays a company to come and decorate their house every year, and they have to give the stuff back afterwards. They do have more money than sense!

MrsTwinklywoo · 22/10/2025 16:51

No , I don’t know anyone who does that .

FeliciaFancybottom · 22/10/2025 16:52

Well, that's everyone told 🙄

TonTonMacoute · 22/10/2025 16:52

Well, we buy a new tree every year because we have a real one, but not decorations!

Getting out the familiar decorations every year is a big part of Christmas for us

That's a good idea.

It is, but it's a hell of a lot of money!

Fair.

I would consider it though, they'd do a better job than me for sure. I don't have an eye for things like home decor.

BoredZelda · 22/10/2025 16:56

Nobody I have ever known does this.

But if they did, it would be entirely up to them, as would their reasoning for doing it.

ShelltheOnions · 22/10/2025 16:57

We have a “real” tree so get a different one each year but have substantially the same baubles, etc. we sometimes buy a couple of new things - I like the Chinese dragon ones in John Lewis at the moment.

I love decorating my house (with ancient decs ) the way I like it and I’d hate someone else with their own ideas to do it.

My boss does this, the price is ridiculous, as in 10k plus every year

Alittlefrustrated · 22/10/2025 16:58

It's all about tradition in my family. Though one tradition is to buy 1 new thing every year. Can be just a toy for the tree or bigger.
One sister has all of the tree toys we grew up with, including a very dainty 64 year old ballerina (who used to be tied to the top of the tree, with lamenta round her leg).

Coffeeishot · 22/10/2025 17:01

I do yes although I think it is the same tree but she has a theme every year with decorations cushions scatter throws and plates and glasses she donates most of it to different charities, but what an absolute faff.

Topseyt123 · 22/10/2025 17:03

I'm glad to say that I don't know anyone who does this. I certainly don't. What a dreadful waste, both of money and of stuff going to landfill. Not at all environmentally friendly!!

I have one fibroptic Christmas tree 🎄 that I now just get out, fluff up, plug in and switch on. We do have another bag of old baubles and decorations (some made by the DDs when they were in infant school) that we sometimes get out. Surely that sort of thing is part of the fun of the run-up to Christmas??

Yes, exactly the same.

For years now I have made a point of buying a new decoration every year from somewhere we have been on holiday. So now decorating the tree is a real trip down memory lane as we remember all these places be we have been on our travels.

Irritatedandsad · 22/10/2025 17:09

No as I feel like the decorations hold memories. We biy a few new bits each year, maybe spend 150 to 200 a year on new stuff and make memories choosing new bits. But build on the old bits.
I used to love getting the old bits out of the loft as a child, memories of christmases past hidden in each box.

PeloMom · 22/10/2025 17:11

I may buy one or two new additions and that’s not every year. Can’t stand the ‘clutter’ that’s has to be stored after Christmas.
@takealettermsjones i would do that but I find it wasteful in a way too. I’m thinking the next house we get (currently house hunting) we get one of those companies to come and hook all lights, outdoor decoration, etc and when Christmas rolls around you just push a switch and everything is on; the rest of the year is off and the way they put it is not visible. Just have to replace any burnt bulbs once in a while.

Soonenough · 22/10/2025 17:11

I have the same decorations for years. And I have inherited my mothers who had some of her mother's so some of the stuff on my tree is from the 1930s . My friend has an artificial tree and every couple of years redecorates with a new theme including cushions , etc.

purplecorkheart · 22/10/2025 17:13

A friend of mine used to. She had a different colour theme every year. Her home situation was awful and I think she felt if they had the picture perfect Christmas then life would get better. It never did until she left.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/10/2025 17:15

Taking out the same decorations every year is a huge part of the charm and magic of christmas for me. These days I'll buy a couple of new baubles each year that are to do with things we did during the year (this year I'm on the lookout for a flamingo, which is tough, and a drumkit, which is tougher!). But the vast majority of the decorations are old friends.

Notmyreality · 22/10/2025 17:15

I do, but then I’m rich.

Think of the extra storage you'd gain thom. Just undecorated the tree, box it up and send it to the local charity shop! Heaven. Except for the special tree decorations, I'd happil5do this if I could afford it

MaplePumpkin · 22/10/2025 17:16

I don’t buy everything new from scratch every year, but I do add to the collection every year. There’s an amazing garden centre half an hour or so away, and they do incredible Christmas displays, lots of different themes etc. Every November my mum and I spend a day there (Inc lunch etc and a walk around the grounds nearby) and buy some new decorations. It’s lovely!

Katypp · 22/10/2025 17:17

I think this is one of those MN things that doesn't happen in real life, but MN posters are convinced it does, which allows them to feel superior and brag about their eco/traditional/moneysaving credentials.
See also Christmas 'tat' such as bedding, which MN posters are convinced is bought new every year (it isn't)

Daysgo · 22/10/2025 17:18

I buy a new tree every year, real tree, my decorations though, oldest goes back around 40 years! We also buy one new tree decoration each Christmas
