Do you or know anyone who buys entire new Christmas decs and other stuff each year

Proud to say my tree n decs are 16 years old. Will not buy a new tree unless it’s looks threadbare or gets lopsided.

People who buy everything new every year have got more money than sense. Stop following trends, stop trying to compete on SM.

Haven't RTFT so someone might have referenced, but there was a US programme about the Xmas Decorators hired to do exactly this. I really enjoyed watching it.

No, I don't know anyone who does that. Money aside, it's bad for the environment!

Our tree will be 15 this time -bought when we moved in to our current home.

We have decorations collected over the years - we sometimes buy one nice one to add to the tree.

I love using the things we have collected, things ds has made etc.

WWomble · 22/10/2025 18:51

Real tree, so bought every year. Decorations are collected through (and maybe before) my lifetime with a tradition of adding a new one each year.

I do have one friend who asked me what my Christmas theme is this year …..🤔

I do, but then I’m rich.

Yes.

Taking out the same decorations every year is a huge part of the charm and magic of christmas for me. These days I'll buy a couple of new baubles each year that are to do with things we did during the year (this year I'm on the lookout for a flamingo, which is tough, and a drumkit, which is tougher!). But the vast majority of the decorations are old friends.

Flamingo:

Sorry for the silly link!

It’s a free country. People can buy whatever they want, whenever they want.

That said, my fake tree and all decs are older than OP’s and I don’t get any new ones. But people can do whatever they want. Mine is an array of mismatched colours and completely tasteless but I don’t care. Others might care so they can do what they want.

Under your “rules” op, is everything superfluous banned? No makeup or nail products allowed? I don’t wear makeup or nail varnish or perfume. does that give me the right to ban everyone else?

Please tell us you said 'Christmas'.

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername, Etsy has drum kit tree decs!

Ahwig · 22/10/2025 20:01

I have a 20 year old fake tree which I hang on senticles as they smell gorgeous and smell like a real tree. I gave up the “ warm soft white lights” , yes they are instagram famous but boring, for multi coloured lantern lights. I complained to my parents growing up about their boring 60’s decorations as I wanted trendy 80’s decs. Omg I wish I still had those 60’s ones , luckily my husband heard me mentioning it to someone and he found some retro glass kaleidoscope 60’s ones and bought them as a surprise for me. We also collect decorations from other countries when we go on holidays. I have them from Australia, America, Mexico , Amsterdam, Cyprus, Rome etc.
i also have personalised ones that have people ( our parents) pets names . Some of those on our tree have passed away now.
Every year I decorate the tree it’s like a trip down memory lane. It may not be “ instagram famous” or classy but to us it’s perfect.

StrugglingwithIvanhoe · 22/10/2025 20:13

I had to replace a lot about 15 years ago after a family of mice made a very cosy and glamorous nest in my tinsel bag!

IDontHateRainbows · 22/10/2025 20:15

The fun is going to john lewis and buying one tree dec each to add to the collection, and maybe one new ornament for the display usually when they go on sale.

Yamamm · 22/10/2025 20:21

No but I eavesdropped on a couple of women in Next when one was saying to the other that she was getting a new box of baubles as she likes it to feel fresh every year and it’s only a few quid.

I wonder what the do with the old stuff. Bin I suppose.

BobbieTables · 22/10/2025 20:25

The fairy on the top of our tree is older than me - I saved her when my mam wanted to throw her out. She must be well into menopause by now 😂. I might let her retire when she's 67.

orangetriangle · 22/10/2025 20:27

I would like to but can't justify it that said I have gold silver white and pink so can do a different theme each year or combo of colours I quite fancy red or burgundy or purple this year but can't justify buying more even if I mix it with another colour

MrsLizzieDarcy · 22/10/2025 20:34

I've upgraded our decorations over the last few years, including a gorgeous Balsam Hill tree and lots of swags for the staircase/curtain poles. Given the cost, I'm hoping that they're long term investments Grin

Cyclistmumgrandma · 22/10/2025 20:34

Same tree every year. It's a very realistic 6ft artificial tree, the sort that costs a fortune in this country. We bought it, without the box, in the January sales in California 38 years ago and paid about $30. The decorations are the same every year but I will need to buy a new set of lights this year.

ShodAndShadySenators · 22/10/2025 20:46

I've had a themed tree, in a way, was the classic red green and gold decorations on a live tree. These days I just have an eclectic mixture on an artificial tree, but I've still got the baubles I had for the live version. I use the ones I especially like and leave others in the boxes the many, many boxes Blush

Every now and again I have a clearout and take a load of decorations to a charity shop in early November. I do buy a few new ones each year which is the reason why really! I had started off buying cheap ones at Wilko because I couldn't afford nicer ones, so when I could afford nicer ones I had to move the others on. I need to do it this year, will probably do it once Halloween is out of the way.

Musicmummy63 · 22/10/2025 20:46

We have a fibre optic tree that we've had for years and use the same decorations but might buy the odd new thing. I have cards with photos of my Dsons from nursery which come out and bring back lovely memories. We sometimes put a note in with the tree when we pack it away, saying what we might hope for the year, then it's great to read the following year.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 22/10/2025 20:50

Real tree every year and ever expanding mish mash of baubles. My disco ball baubles must be well over 29 years old now and very few have survived. I am going to hunt for replacements online right now

lazyarse123 · 22/10/2025 20:58

I know a lady who changes her theme every couple of years. I know she has given some away but I don't know if she always does that. I really don't like themed trees they look a bit sterile. They're pretty at first but after a while they look boring.
I love my decs. My favourite is a Santa that was my mums and I'm 67. He always has pride of place even though he looks a bit worse for wear.
I have to be kept away from garden centres near Christmas I could happily go bankrupt buying all the lovely things.

SanityLeftTheChat · 22/10/2025 21:05

Katypp · 22/10/2025 17:17

I think this is one of those MN things that doesn't happen in real life, but MN posters are convinced it does, which allows them to feel superior and brag about their eco/traditional/moneysaving credentials.
See also Christmas 'tat' such as bedding, which MN posters are convinced is bought new every year (it isn't)

Christmas bedding is not tat, neither is my Christmas toilet and kitchen roll 😂

BellRock1234 · 22/10/2025 21:17

I have never met anyone who does this.

I do buy a new tree decoration or two every year, something that is relevant to the things the kids are into at the time. I love putting up the xmas dinosaurs, trains, lego decorations, etc, from years gone by and chosing something for the current year. We have run out of space for tasteful colour-themed baubles now.

Member984815 · 22/10/2025 21:24

My tree is 23 my decorations are old too a lot of handmade ones from kids over the years I do buy a decoration when I go on holiday so my tree is a mish mash. I love it . In my opinion It's your money spend it on what you want if you can afford it

kippersmum · 22/10/2025 21:30

Real tree every year and we have a real mix of decorations that come out every year. Quite a few I've sadly inherited and are older than me.

Interestingly DC when mid teens dreaded me getting out their little kid decorations done at playschool and primary. Now they are young adults they LOVE that I saved them and was totally embarrassing!

We add a couple every year and obviously some of the really old ones fall apart, but I'd far rather use them than keep them in a box.
