Do you or know anyone who buys entire new Christmas decs and other stuff each year

Proud to say my tree n decs are 16 years old. Will not buy a new tree unless it’s looks threadbare or gets lopsided.

People who buy everything new every year have got more money than sense. Stop following trends, stop trying to compete on SM.

I do, but then I’m rich.

I stand corrected! 😂

Yes, exactly the same.

For years now I have made a point of buying a new decoration every year from somewhere we have been on holiday. So now decorating the tree is a real trip down memory lane as we remember all these places be we have been on our travels.

We do this too, it’s always lovely getting the decorations out and remembering the trips we’ve taken 😊

We have a prelit tree that used to belong to my ILs. Plus some of their decorations, andI also I usually buy a few on my travels each year, so our tree is covered in memories. I have tree decorations from all over the world.

yorktown · 22/10/2025 17:26

Friend of mine does, she has a new colour theme each year. She makes most of her stuff and buys a real tree.
I don't know what happens to be old, out of favour, decorations.

Peridot1 · 22/10/2025 17:29

I have changed the themes over the years but have kept what I don’t use so if I want to play around each year I can.

We have two trees. One is stuff that is all memories that we have (well I have!) been collecting over the years some of which goes back to the first tiny tree I bought the first year I was living with now DH back in 1988. And we have moved around the world a bit so have things bought in each country we lived in.

I also bought stuff that suited each rented house and have kept a lot. And I try to use most of it. To the point where last year I got completely overwhelmed by it all and am determined to pare it all back this year. It’s all coming down from the loft early next month and I’m going to sort through it all.

Well, we buy a new tree every year because we have a real one, but not decorations!

Getting out the familiar decorations every year is a big part of Christmas for us

My mum passed away this year, and ive realised her Christmas decorations (of my youth) are lost; I'm mortified. Its such a big part of Christmas 🎄

ContentedAlpaca · 22/10/2025 17:30

Yes I do. I didn't vote though as I feel it's a bit unreasonable to be telling her off.
I suspect she has nothing in the house of sentimental value. I feel it's a bit sad and possibly part of OCD in that they can't stand having any additional clutter around. They'll be given to charity in the new year.
Glad to see it's less common than I thought.
I like getting my old decs out but I know my teen would quite enjoy choosing new ones.

Peridot1 · 22/10/2025 17:31

Oh that’s sad @toomuchfaff. When my sisters and I were clearing out our parents house we all took a few of the decorations they had. They are nothing special really but still nice to have.

Think of the extra storage you'd gain thom. Just undecorated the tree, box it up and send it to the local charity shop! Heaven. Except for the special tree decorations, I'd happil5do this if I could afford it

This is true, that woman is clearly a genuis !

freedo · 22/10/2025 17:33

I know people who add to their collection but don't bin the old stuff.

AutumnCosy2025 · 22/10/2025 17:37

Nope

I have an artificial tree these days, I'm not physically able to deal with a real one anymore. 'He' was £1.50 from a charity shop 15 years ago, he was there in the last day the CS shop was open before Christmas. We rescued each other.

He goes up each year. He drops as many bits as a 'tea' tree. So gets more sparse each year, but he holds SO many memories & I love him. I could replace him.

by the time he's groaning under and the decorations (collected over the years he looks lovely) it's a 'sentimental' collection of things NOT. A designer, colour co ordinated tasteful tree. I love it.

cant wait to get him out & sorted 🎄 ❤️

Lostuser · 22/10/2025 17:40

Had the same artificial tree for probably 20 years and decorations ranging from 15 years old to last couple of years. I do like to buy an addition each year but nothing wildly expensive.

skyeisthelimit · 22/10/2025 17:47

I know a couple of people who do this, and change colour schemes and have new each year.

Personally, my tree is a riot of colour with decorations going back to my childhood, and with stuff that DD made at school, and interests we share.

I have a decoration for every year of her life with the year on it and I also buy 1 or 2 other decorations every year.

WWLD · 22/10/2025 17:49

I don't even have a 'tree' any more (no space). I have a Christmas tree shaped wall hanging I cover in old - and occasionally, new - decorations.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 22/10/2025 17:54

I have decorations that are from my childhood, I add lots of pieces to it every year but keep the same colour scheme (burgundy, golds, browns and wood). Luckily this year my colour scheme is very popular as are the bows I’ve had on my tree for years. I’ve managed to add some lovely pieces to my collection this year.

Cat1504 · 22/10/2025 18:16

I have one SIL who changes her colour theme every 2 to 3 years…..so last couple of years all baubles were red/ gold…..she gave them all to charity shop in January and is currently looking to buy blue/ silver tree Decs …..never known her keep a colour theme more than 4 years…..she a band 7 nurse so 55k ish so not loaded …just gets bored quickly

BoringBarbie · 22/10/2025 18:21

I usually buy some new decorations every year, but not to replace, just to add. It's never "trendy". Usually it's things we buy from souvenir shops to hang on the tree so we can reminisce as we hang then up.

Vaxtable · 22/10/2025 18:25

som of my family but a new tree each year because they have real ones, I don’t and I just put my decs up year after year

interestingly I was talking to someone who works at a local charity, each year they get loads of donated Christmas decs in January that people no longer want because they have changed scheme. They sell really well when thier Christmas shop bit opens each year,p.

JaninaDuszejko · 22/10/2025 18:27

I think the kind of person who buys new decorations every year is either an influencer or maybe companies like hotels (or any business).

Having said that, there are loads of decorations in the shops every year and if we are all buying one or two new decorations a year, that in itself is a problem and a sign of overconsumption. If we all swapped to buying second-hand decorations this year (and putting our own old and unloved decorations to charity shops) that would make a massive impact.

MagicLoop · 22/10/2025 18:27

New tree every year because I don't like plastic trees so I always have real ones. But all the decorations are used every year. When we were still building up the tree decorations collection, I used to take the dc to a shop to choose a new one each year, but we stopped that when we had enough decorations!

StarCourt · 22/10/2025 18:27

i wish i could afford to throw away my tree and decs every January. Live in a tiny flat with no storage

Daisydad · 22/10/2025 18:29

Not quite the thread topic, but I’d love a cupboard large enough on the ground floor, and a Christmas tree on wheels. Would save so much time and effort each year.
