Do you or know anyone who buys entire new Christmas decs and other stuff each year

Proud to say my tree n decs are 16 years old. Will not buy a new tree unless it’s looks threadbare or gets lopsided.

People who buy everything new every year have got more money than sense. Stop following trends, stop trying to compete on SM.

Last year the thought of getting the massive tree up after moving house with its hook and hang branches and then doing the lights made me close to breaking point.

A friend was getting rid of a nice pre lit tree that was too big for their small space so I accepted their offer.

I tried to see if any charities or groups could use our tree as it was still in really good condition. No takers. Eventually I managed to persuade a charity shop to take it - they had a sign up saying no more Xmas trees. I think they were planning on using it as a display in one of their shops/hospices.

Honestly I was relieved as I was considering landfill.

Regardless of money and desire I think we all have a responsibility to consider our environmental impact of such things.

Yes, I do. She decides on the colour theme and purchases all new items from retailers like B&M or Matalan.

An odd story about the same person that I think about often is that when she moved house a few years ago, she binned everything and bought new. Bin, cutlery, knives, bedding, lights, towels. It was such a waste.

I’ve never even heard of anyone doing that never mind know anyone who does.

My friend split up with her ex DH. Vast majority of Xmas decs they had were taken by him as they were inherited. She got rid of the rest to charity shops.

She bought a mix from charity shops- some hardly been used and new. These will last 10 years or so

But you could apply the "what about the poor children" to everything. Do make sure you only ever buy minimal amounts and all second hand / cheap so you can give all the other money to charity?

And i assume the company doesn't landfill it's products every year else there would be no point in renting them. They'll go back, be checked and sent out again the following year to someone else

Where did I say that I DON’T spend a lot of money on a tree decoration???? I didn’t!!!!!

FlowersInPots · 23/10/2025 13:23

I love my old decs and getting them out each year but I know more than 1 person who has several different sets of decorations in different colours/themes. They’re rotated depending on what they want that year.
its not wasteful as they don’t bin it/replace every year but the storage required is more than I could deal with.

Peridot1 · 23/10/2025 13:32

That’s kind of what I do with one tree @FlowersInPots. I am lucky that we have lots of space in the loft for storage but I have to say it’s getting a bit much. Having a cull next month.

I have never heard of anyone doing this
