Do you or know anyone who buys entire new Christmas decs and other stuff each year

Proud to say my tree n decs are 16 years old. Will not buy a new tree unless it’s looks threadbare or gets lopsided.

People who buy everything new every year have got more money than sense. Stop following trends, stop trying to compete on SM.

No anc I know no one who does. Christmas is about the history of the decorations. .I treasure those from my gran, grandparents and made by dd. I have a special special one of a friend who passed away. I remember her ever time I put it out ..the decorations and where they came from is Christmas...

I think the kind of person who buys new decorations every year is either an influencer or maybe companies like hotels (or any business).

Having said that, there are loads of decorations in the shops every year and if we are all buying one or two new decorations a year, that in itself is a problem and a sign of overconsumption. If we all swapped to buying second-hand decorations this year (and putting our own old and unloved decorations to charity shops) that would make a massive impact.

Yeah there'd be job loses and shops closing, we need people spending money. Without those of us who buy, then fill the charity shops, a lot of peopke would go without.
I used to theme my rooms and have different colours. I got my loft boarded out for Christmas, Halloween and Easter decorations. Every year there's appeals for decorations and i've kitted out a few hard up famlies, living room. This year my GC school needs decorations. Not all of us have happy childhpod memories of Christmas, so, as adults, we've done it our way.

mouseaka · 22/10/2025 21:38

I was contemplating this the other day.
Most if not all people I know re-use the same decorations each year. Maybe they get a couple new ones as gifts or to replace broken or tatty old ones. But probably not that many.

But give it a month and the shops will be absolutely STUFFED with them! Who on earth is buying all these decorations?!

ChristmasIsForLife · 22/10/2025 21:41

I do. I have around twenty sets of decorations, for a differently themed tree in each room of the house! Some are just small, tabletop trees, others are 6ft real or artificial ones. It gives me enormous pleasure to collect them. Although it takes 25 hours to put them all up and take them all down again 😂

MediumDwarf · 22/10/2025 21:46

Yes! I had a manager who used to do this, or something similar. I don't know if he replaced absolutely everything each year, but there would be a new colour or theme for the tree with coordinated decor for the room it was in, so a lot of money was spent each year. Madness

He also used to lay his table the weekend before if he was hosting, which I thought was a good idea to max enjoyment time during the weekend- his was of course an elaborate table scape that probably took days though, not just a few sprigs of holly and candles like I do.

We have a real tree so that is new each year, but other than adding the odd new thing to the collection we reuse it all, some of our decorations are older than me!

DingDongJingle · 22/10/2025 21:52

No, I don’t know anyone who buys everything new every year.
I buy a new tree every year because we have a real tree. Same decorations though.

MsMillyMollyMandy · 22/10/2025 21:59

I have inherited vintage and I buy vintage as the baubles are extremely fragile and I could lose one or two every year.
I love hanging things that I know my Mum hung on her family tree 85 years ago.
I also have the primitive tree decorations that the kids made at nursery and primary school.
I do get new lights every few years as I think old lights can be a fire hazard.

SALaw · 22/10/2025 22:00

No

Everydayimhuffling · 22/10/2025 22:03

We buy a new bauble for each DC each year, which they are very excited to choose. All the rest of the decorations are old. I like getting them all out and seeing all the different ones. Our house is pretty eclectic too though, so a colour coordinated tree would look very out of place!

defrazzled · 22/10/2025 22:06

My friend did this for years, when I asked her why she was confused and thought that was what everyone did 😂She is a muslim and her family never did Christmas but she loves all the decorations and just never cottoned on. She has a collection she keeps now!

bumblebee1000 · 22/10/2025 22:07

Yes, I know a fairly wealthy bored retired woman who spends most days on her huge sofa clicking away on amazon buying lots of tat for friends all year round....each year there are 3 new trees and lights and decorations, after xmas, she gets a friend to drive it all to her storage unit, she never retrieves any of the previous stuff. I dread seeing her on birthday or xmas as get handed several bin bags full of useless plastic junk that all goes to the charity shops. And yes she has been told many times that I dont need or want anything !

Fibonacci2 · 22/10/2025 22:08

For us, it wouldn’t be Christmas without going to choose our tree. The children get to pick one new decoration each year, we make an afternoon of it, hot chocolate and cake! Our tree is eccentric and when we decorate every decoration has a memory. Everyone has different taste and that’s ok but I find the coordinated look a bit gauche.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 22/10/2025 22:17

Hate the idea of a tree that a company has decorated for me, or even a new perfectly coordinated tree. It would just remind me of all the many trees in the lobbies of corporate buildings I see at work. Lovely for an office, not for a home.

Well I know someone who pays a company to come and decorate their house every year, and they have to give the stuff back afterwards. They do have more money than sense!

We have done this twice over the years. Both times we’ve been unexpectedly away due to family emergencies and got back right before Xmas. We wouldn't have had time to decorate ourselves and didn’t want our kids missing out. We wouldn’t do it other than that though as we enjoy doing it.

We buy a few new things each year, but not everything. Most people I know do the same.

We have a real tree but everything stays the same. It’s part of the excitement for our kids, putting their favourites on the tree, putting up the decorations they remember from when Santa still came to our house.
And for me and DP - we have decs that we had as children or that were made by grandparents and parents.

MyDeftDuck · 23/10/2025 08:10

I know someone who always decorates according to the ‘colour of Christmas’ for that specific year! Who even decides on that???
To me, the traditional Christmas colours are red, white and green. We’ve got decoration that are older than me and are very sentimental and treasured, sometimes they go on the tree, sometimes not. We’re bought new baubles when we’ve seen some we like (the quality isn’t as good as years ago btw) Everything is always stored carefully and yes, we have casualties and some get broken but we’re not that precious about stuff…….memories remain long afterwards.
As for paying thousand to have professional decorators trim up the house……….thats just plain nuts! How many underprivileged children would have a better Christmas if that money were channelled elsewhere??
Finally, isn’t there enough stuff going into landfill without adding to it by disposing of useful things? One man’s tat is another’s man’s treasurer!

I have the same decorations for years. And I have inherited my mothers who had some of her mother's so some of the stuff on my tree is from the 1930s . My friend has an artificial tree and every couple of years redecorates with a new theme including cushions , etc.

You're very lucky! I yearn to find some of the decorations my nan had on her tree back in the early 1980s, so to be able to have some from the 1930s sound excellent!

Doggymummar · 23/10/2025 08:30

We have a Balsam Hill tree now in it's 12 th year and have followed themes, copper and white, blue and white red and gold, 80s tat etc rose gold last year. Also we had a pound shop Christmas one year so we have a ton of decorations but I do like to get something new every year. This year it's a felted reindeer. Hopefully we will be in our new house for Christmas but if not we won't be having decs this year as we will be moving very soon afterwards and it's a faff

StrugglingwithIvanhoe · 23/10/2025 08:30

Catesby's have some beautiful vintage style baubles.

Itbeginswith · 23/10/2025 08:34

My decorations are a mix. I have my grandmother’s old decorations which I love and they bring back childhood memories. We have lots of the in-laws old decorations too. When the children were little they each chose a new decoration for the tree every year. I also have some that the children made in school. We then have a couple from holidays that we’ve been on and one that we bought on our honeymoon. Lots of lovely memories attached to all of them.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 23/10/2025 08:38

I dread to think the cost of my Christmas decoration collection. It's a global collection, each costing anything from 50p to £15.

Notmyreality · 22/10/2025 17:15

I do, but then I’m rich.

Its not about money but waste.

That's not particularly wasteful though if the company is using the decorations again and again.

I detest the "trend" of matchy matchy and some influencer or company deciding that the in colour scheme for 2025 is silver and purple, or green and pink, or gold and black or whatever. Fuck that. I do not buy into that nonsense and have a clashing tree with decorations made/bought over the years, including vintage ones.

But you could apply the "what about the poor children" to everything. Do make sure you only ever buy minimal amounts and all second hand / cheap so you can give all the other money to charity?

And i assume the company doesn't landfill it's products every year else there would be no point in renting them. They'll go back, be checked and sent out again the following year to someone else

GlitterFaery · 23/10/2025 09:44

Don’t know anyone like that. We had to buy all new last year (long story which I won’t bore you with) and it cost £200! Definitely won’t be replacing them anytime soon. Luckily didn’t need to replace the tree which must be coming up to 20 years old seeing as I got it secondhand from my parents and that was about 15 years ago 😂
