Cambridge Dictionary has finally made the term female inclusive, took them long enough. "She was the school's first trans athlete"

It's about time the word female was updated in dictionaries to its true meaning, inclusive of males. Don't know why it took so long for this to happen.

Yuck. I’ve just been explaining to my 10yo super fit, rugby playing, climbing, fell running daughter that this nicey-nicey-be-kind-include-everyone nonsense sees spaces on women’s and girls sports teams going to men and boys. Thank you for highlighting this. I’m sure they’ll tell me what a terrible person I am when I object.

To update the dictionary to reflect trans people as women is beyond gross. A person can mutilate their body and cosplay as the opposite gender but it will never change genetics.

A bit of an ambiguous use of the word given that male and female refer to sex rather than gender. Transwomen are males who identify with the feminine gender and transmen are females who identify with the masculine gender so the sentence "She was the school's first trans female athlete" might generally be understood to be referring to someone female ie a transman where perhaps the person being described woukd prefer the pronoun "He" - so it's a vague sentence that needs additional clarification if they want to be understood, and is therefore a poor example of usage of the word.

Surely that definition is wrong? Belonging or relating to women or girls would be one of the definitions of feminine.

And the example given is totally unclear: what is a trans female athlete? Does that mean a female child who identifies as a boy? Or does it mean an unathletic girl who identifies as an athlete? Or what?

It means a male athlete who identifies as female.

She was the school's first trans female athlete.

Translation: He was the first boy at the school who tried to cheat at sports by pretending to be a girl.

I'm getting on in years so I'm not going to see the outcome of all this utter shite. It's mad, it's ludicrous and in my 20s I would have not believed that anyone in their right mind could buy into this ridiculousness. I sincerely hope the world comes to its senses before men, the male of our species, control the whole shebang of toilets, changing rooms, womens' awards, winning at womens sports, invading female support groups and shelters . . .ad infinitum. I will rest in peace though because if they dig me up in100 years time my DNA will shout out that I am a she. And when all the shouting is over and done, transwomen, in the final analysis, will be revealed as men. Right down to their bones. So that's a cheerful thought:)

Dictionaries are supposed to inform accurately. They used to explain that certain words were commonly used incorrectly and in which circumstances. Some dictionaries now include "careen" as meaning career.

To be honest, using a word meaning beaching a ship to scrape barnacles and weed off the bottom to describe something hurtling out of control seems apposite.

It's baffling how a tiny minority are ruling the roost and somehow managing to convince so many to not just turn a blind eye but vociferously deny the most basic scientific facts. Men can't be female. Simple as that. You can't 'trans' your way out of the biological truth. I'm weary of seeing otherwise sane people play along with this nonsense.

This is the definition of female as an adjective pertaining to gender. There are other definitions pertaining to sex, and also a definition of the noun.

Dictionaries reflect usage. Look up the definition of ‘literally’ for an example.
