Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

I am not sure how you can prove the viewer stole the candle.
This is exactly why I have never allowed a viewer to view my property without me being present.
I know Estate Agents don't like it but tough, my house my rules!

Just catching up!

To be clear: I feel sorry for OP having property stolen. That is appalling in the context and I’m not minimising what is a crime and an unsettling one too, as well as a horrible breach of trust and professionalism where the agents are concerned.

But OP - you were daft to tell us it was a Diptyque candle costing £180! OMG - have you any clue how that’s going to come over to people on here who would spend only half that on a weekly shop, or indeed less? It’s really tone-deaf and for that, I think you need to take the teasing on the chin.

£180 candles….you must be either loaded or very gullible, or both!🤣

Why would it be time deaf? Everything you say is just making you look worse not the OP

PortSalutSherryHello · 19/10/2025 16:46

And you aren't teasing you're being a total bitch which plenty of people have called you out on and yet you carry on.

Awful

Myblueclematis · 19/10/2025 16:48

How about she just likes expensive candles and spends HER OWN MONEY on them because she can! 😡

Charlize43 · 19/10/2025 16:50

Is all this waxing lyrical about candles is getting on anyone else's wick?

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:51

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 15:36

It did.

It's not a rip off if the source ingredients - except the wax which dyptique can keep because their candles are made from parrafin wax (which is not only sourced from petroleum but also contains carcinogens) - all come from the same wholesaler.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm very much of the opinion I'd prefer small sellers who handmake good quality to sellers like diptyque who make their candles from the cheapest possible wax and sell for the highest price. 😁

Edited

So now it's the "grin" emoji. The point is - you are judging people on what they spend their own money on. I have bought your "small sellers" candles and tbh, they are shite.

ChocolateBoxCottage · 19/10/2025 16:54

I think OP had to say it was an expensive candel and can't win. Because if it was £4 from Tesco people would be exactly the same. "It's just £4, get a grip, buy another" etc.

What it was a Primark bra? Can't people see it's a big deal whatever it was? Someone op has trusted into her house has stolen and violated that safe space.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/10/2025 16:55

@Calcaata - have you contacted the estate agents? They should have supervised the viewing properly, then no theft would have happened. It doesn’t matter whether MNers think you deserve a Dyptique candle, or should have given all the money to the Sanctuary for Alchoholic Snails - something has been stolen from your house - and that is wrong, pure and simple.

I'm very sorry you've had a bad experienced, but not all small, independent, businesses are crap.

And I am very sorry my use of emojis bothers you so much you've felt compelled to comment on it multiple times. 😉😃😂😳

If I don't see the cry laughing emoji on this thread again it won't be too soon.

Do people really think sticking one on the end of their post hides all the passive aggressive jibes they've thrown about. They must take us for stupid.

MaturingCheeseball · 19/10/2025 17:01

Exactly - candle schmandle - it was a theft. I don’t see how OP can prove it happened, though.

dsis was selling her house and the ea turned up with an extended family - mother, father, kids and two sets of grandparents. They fanned out over the house and were touching everything like it was a boot sale and getting things out of cupboards and drawers. Dsis was very upset and ea was very apologetic.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2025 17:02

FreeTheOakTree · 19/10/2025 14:43

There are no 3 wick candles for these prices. Not in Tesco, neither in TKmaxx

Think my 3 wick was 4.99 from Aldi / got it last week

Viewer stole from my house?
BlackStrayCat · 19/10/2025 17:10

and it looks it.

susiedaisy1912 · 19/10/2025 17:14

If op had said it was a piece of jewellery for £180 there wouldn’t be half the criticism on here . Op has had someone steal from her. That’s a criminal offence and she came here for support.

Praying4Peace · 19/10/2025 17:29

OP how can you be 100pc certain that it was stolen by them?

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 19/10/2025 17:37

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:08

Yes. I'm just dismissing your posts as you are clearly hysterical and have no idea what makes a good candle. You probably buy the ones that that are cheap as chips, but which, by constantly burning them, means you have to redecorate every two years due to the smoke damage caused by cheap candles. I didn't ask you anyway.

Now this post DOES need a 😂 emoji!

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 18/10/2025 21:22

Fuck me, people are paying £180 for candles? How the other half live...

Oh ffs, I was waiting for this, there’s always one!! 🤦‍♀️

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 19/10/2025 17:40

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 16:10

Yes. Completely hysterical.

Cheap doesn't mean 'smoke damage'. What an oversimplification of a very complex issue. Although I am not sure why I am surprised given you have displayed a rather incredible lack of critical thinking throughout this thread.

Oh yes, cheap DOES mean smoke damage in some cases. And lots of nasty greasy residue on EVERYTHING as I said earlier. I have known people this has happened to. (I said this earlier too.)

For someone who claims to work in candle making, you don't know very much about candles. At all!

😂

!

And I think that’s where other posters are coming from too.

I’d say most of them sound sanctimonious and mean spirited, but maybe that’s just me.

Edited

Some do but I think I block them out after years in here. This thread has made me consider my ex cleaner may have stolen my tennis bracelet. I can’t find it and looked everywhere but I did used to leave my jewellery out in the bedroom, so she would have had access. I was assuming I’d lost it - but that doesn’t really make sense as I’ve run out of places to look. I’ll never know.

I’m interested in how your estate agent reacted to you being present for viewings. Having read this thread, it’s confirmed my worries about leaving my house in the hands of an agent and going out if we put it on the market. Did you accompany viewers round the house?

Always one? Loads of posters have said this on this thread! That £180 is a lot to spend on a candle. OP can buy what she wants though. Nothing to do with anyone else.

Nearly50omg · 19/10/2025 17:43

Cherrysoup · 19/10/2025 16:04

I’m selling the house next year and now shitting myself about allowing anyone to look round unsupervised! I’ll be moving any jewellery/large candies, but genuinely, what if they take a fancy to an ornament or something?

Get indoor security cameras - the ring one for £20 I had in my bedroom when I was selling my house and it was funny watching back some of the viewings once people realised there was a camera in there - they became a lot less interested in my drawers and contents of bedroom funnily enough! Since being burgled from cleaners etc and also previous house sales I wasn’t having a repeat performance

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 17:45

@Calcaata OP, what have you decided to do?

Nearly50omg · 19/10/2025 17:47

Just do your own viewings and then you don’t have to worry about thefts. Ideally have someone else there too to keep an eye as if there’s a couple of them they may bring children and let the children go look upstairs on their own etc - make it very clear this isn’t happening and someone needs will go with them! The damage and theft caused by sticky fingers from children and old people was more than the main viewers I found

Salome61 · 19/10/2025 17:50

So sorry. I sold my house at auction and the very young viewing agent couldn't supervise the number of people they invited to viewings, I saw all the cars.

Somebody took my son's camera, I searched high and low, it had definitely been on the shelf when I went onto the market. They also broke the handle off the tiny door of the Aga where you light it, must have used some force.
