Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

It doesn’t matter whether it was a £180 piece of jewellery, an £180 sculpture/piece of art, a £180 bottle of champagne or a £180 candle. The point is that house viewers stole something of that value while being shown round the house by the estate agent. Change estate agents and make a complaint.

Indeed, or if it was something priceless - i.e. only sentimental value - theft is theft.

AndeanFlamingo · 19/10/2025 15:58

@HeatingFiddler Thanks for the info but it doesn't actually explain why you think that more expensive candles are a rip-off. I knew that wax type and fragrance load are the key factors in candle quality but you're claiming that candles with scents identical to Diptyque etc can be bought elsewhere much cheaper. I've never found cheaper candles than Diptyque/Jo Malone etc that are anywhere near the quality and would honestly love to know where these identical but cheaper candles can be found because, in my experience, buying cheap is a complete false economy.

AndeanFlamingo · 19/10/2025 16:03

And I am so sorry to @Calcaata for contributing to the derail. You are completely right to be upset and you absolutely should be complaining to the estate agents then police if you feel necessary. And you can spend your money on whatever you like.

Cherrysoup · 19/10/2025 16:04

I’m selling the house next year and now shitting myself about allowing anyone to look round unsupervised! I’ll be moving any jewellery/large candies, but genuinely, what if they take a fancy to an ornament or something?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 19/10/2025 16:07

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 15:45

@Treesandsheepeverywhere it's not guess work. It's based off the wax they use. The wax many big companies use is much cheaper and thus the quality of the fragrance is poorer. See above my detailed explanation 😊

Like you said, you found candle making too difficult, so would take it you're not an expert on the matter, so will pass thanks.

You still haven't explained why OP is a mug for spending her money to her choosing.

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 16:08

@AndeanFlamingo There are multiple recommendations on the Christmas threads from various posters for lots of smaller businesses where posters swear they sell the same. Thread Six on the Christmas thread has quite a few recommendations from what I remember so worth taking a look there. Or you could try the place PP on this thread has mentioned (p17). Scented Barn in Holt also do lovely candles - again they use the same fragrance as Jo Malone use. Pintail Candles are also okay, but they're a bit shifty on what wax they use - although again they use the same fragrances as Jo Malone etc.

Easy scents to find elsewhere are; Lime, Basil and Mandarin, Pear and Freesia, Cranberry, Orange and Cinnamon etc. If you type those scents into something like google or Etsy you'll find dozens of businesses that sell candles using those fragrances.

The reason the big companies a rip off, in my eyes, is they use the same fragrance other sellers (such as those listed above in this post), but they use cheaper wax and then charge an insane amount. What you essentially pay for is actually a cheaper product (because of the wax they use) but you are paying for the label and the name.

Which is absolutely fine, if that's what you want to pay for...but, personally, I would rather have a better quality, less toxic, product for less money!

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:08

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 15:10

They're literally not. See my posts above about where all these sellers source their 'materials' to make their candles. 😊

Yes. I'm just dismissing your posts as you are clearly hysterical and have no idea what makes a good candle. You probably buy the ones that that are cheap as chips, but which, by constantly burning them, means you have to redecorate every two years due to the smoke damage caused by cheap candles. I didn't ask you anyway.

Yes. Completely hysterical.

Cheap doesn't mean 'smoke damage'. What an oversimplification of a very complex issue. Although I am not sure why I am surprised given you have displayed a rather incredible lack of critical thinking throughout this thread.

EasternStandard · 19/10/2025 16:11

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 13:43

It literally is from the same wholesaler. I would know, I sell soaps. I buy the same materials, from the same wholesaler, as White Company.

Most of them buy their scents from Candle Shack, or Supplies for Candles. Who also do products for Soaps that I make.

Don't believe me? Look at the CLP label on the candle, it will contain the exact same ingredients and information as the Etsy Seller, or Pintail Candles, or Next, or Boots. Why? Because the fragrance oil used all originates from the same place 😊

So, you are completely, irrefutably, 100% wrong.

It’s irrelevant. It doesn’t mean people can steal stuff from house viewings.

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:12

Sellingseashells · 19/10/2025 14:08

YABU. You can either afford a candle that expensive, in which case you can afford to replace it easily. Or you can’t.

They shouldn’t have stolen. However, it’s a candle. It’s not like they stole something actually valuable, as PPs have said.

How do you know that? It could have meaning to the OP. Maybe someone she loves bought her it.

spoonbillstretford · 19/10/2025 16:14

Kimura · 19/10/2025 05:40

I'm aware. As for that making them 'more generous', that's very much a matter of opinion.

It's a matter of several studies carried out on it if you care to put your head above the parapet of your Wealthy People Are The Best algorithms. Who is being more generous, do you think? An average earner who donates £20 or someone who is in the top 1% of earnings who does the same?

BlackStrayCat · 19/10/2025 16:14

EA doing her/his Christmas shopping.
Perfect present.

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:15

caringcarer · 19/10/2025 14:13

A neighbour told me once she'd had her engagement ring stolen that was on a little tray next to her bed. She noticed it was gone the same day but EA had shown around 3 lots of people. She claimed on her insurance.

A Magpie stole my engagement ring.

TheRealHousewife · 19/10/2025 16:18

Calcaata · 19/10/2025 00:28

Because I wanted to use it as a teapot.

@Calcaata I’m always puzzled as to why it’s anything to do with anyone else what one spends their own disposable income on.

Enjoy your unique teapot! 🫖😅

Viewer stole from my house?
CoffeeCantata · 19/10/2025 16:25

Just catching up!

To be clear: I feel sorry for OP having property stolen. That is appalling in the context and I’m not minimising what is a crime and an unsettling one too, as well as a horrible breach of trust and professionalism where the agents are concerned.

But OP - you were daft to tell us it was a Diptyque candle costing £180! OMG - have you any clue how that’s going to come over to people on here who would spend only half that on a weekly shop, or indeed less? It’s really tone-deaf and for that, I think you need to take the teasing on the chin.

£180 candles….you must be either loaded or very gullible, or both!🤣

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already looked at some of these and can't match up many of the fragrances I'd be interested in, I'll look a bit more though in case I'm missing something.

AndeanFlamingo · 19/10/2025 16:30

@CoffeeCantata If she hadn't told us, the thread would have been full of people asking what the item is and how much it's worth. And it's not tone deaf, the thread is about her candle, which was stolen, not about candle recommendations or the cost of living.

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:31

Thank you!

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 16:33

AndeanFlamingo · 19/10/2025 15:18

This. I've tried many brands of scented candles and my favourites are Jo Malone, Diptyque and White Company. I'm always buying cheaper ones in the hope of matching the quality but I'm always disappointed. DH bought one of the Aldi dupes today (he said it smelt nice and it was only £9) and guess what? There's barely any scent.

Edited

Same!

HeatingFiddler · 19/10/2025 16:33

@AndeanFlamingo happy to help. You could also try 'Small Business Supporters' thread - which is specifically for small businesses, to get people to buy their products this Christmas, but I think about 60% of the recommendations on it are either alcohol or candles 😁Says a lot about mumsnet tbh!

And? My weekly food budget is £60, I will still blow that on a candle and would be pissed off if someone stole it

Exactly. It would be nice if the people "teasing" the OP could give us a list of items they think people are allowed to spend large amounts of money on and complain about the theft of. Just for future reference.

DemonsRocks · 19/10/2025 16:40

This thread has to be the worst one I've seen with a derail.
We need an 'ignore' button more than ever.

I find the scent to be deeper / stays for longer even when the candle is not on.

See I think that with the WC. I have a 4 wick candle, but I also have their pot pourri in my living room and I don't need to burn the candle as, for me, the room always smells lovely anyway. Thank you btw.
