Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Well of course they’re deceiving. They’re claiming to be something they are not.

Where is the deception? They are trans.

I don't think we (collectively, as a society or scientifically) 100% understand what that is. But it isn't as simple as a man masquerading as a woman, or a woman masquerading as a man.

You may think that is the case, in which case I will leave you to your opinion.

Isn’t it? So what else do you call a male claiming to be”feel like a woman”. He’s basically a man who prefers things that sexist people associate more with women. That’s fine. But he’s not a woman.

"Taking away jobs" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The drama.

He appears to be employed in a job much better suited to a woman in an industry where women are under employed.

What do you mean "looks dated"? Has becoming trans gone out of fashion, like crinolines? What the hell are you talking about?

Yes. From the rapidly dropping number of young people claiming a trans identity noted in the states, and the same noticed across schools in the UK, it very much is going out of fashion.

It was a top driven, heavily marketed business strategy partly designed to increase the $billions of profit made by the pharmaceutical companies (2 of which are led by men who claim to be women) and gave out vast funds to organisations like Stonewall, the Lib Dem’s and Labour to indoctrinate children through schools and social media.

Well no. It’s not my opinion. It’s facts. A male can never be a woman. A e we own is an adult human female. So he’s a man acting as his idea of how a woman should act. So sexist and misogynistic. I don’t make the facts. I just present them

Funny thing is, we haven't seen the same level of objection to a man playing a woman in Mrs Brown's Boys, for example.

I'm not seeing the protests about Stephen Fry playing Lady Bracknell in a theatre production, either. If this is about men taking roles from women, why isn't anyone demanding Mrs Brown because played by an older woman who notoriously struggle to get cast?

Ditto Lady Bracknell, it's a brilliant role for a woman.

It's not really about men playing women's parts is it? If it was, we'd all be boycotting trad pantos with dames in, etc.

As far as I understand it, in Mrs Brown's Boys the fact that it's patently a man playing a woman is part of the joke. Like Les Dawson (gone but not forgotten) back in the day.
Stephen Fry playing Lady Bracknell: that one does piss me off, since you ask. It's not a panto and I presume (may be wrong) it's not being played for laughs in the way that Mrs Brown's Boys is. So yes, I am annoyed that he gets the role when there are magnificent women of the right playing age to take it.
I just didn't start a thread about it. But then again I didn't start this one either.

I wouldn't want to be the person attempting to tell Sally Wainwright what to do. She's a writer, let her write. She has a few themes running through her work, leave her alone. She's responsible for some of the best tv we've seen. If you don't like it, find the off switch.

Namelessnelly · 22/10/2025 11:46

Yo be fair, the fact they let a male appropriating womanhood act in a drama about women’s struggles does actually highlight men’s appalling misogyny. You are right.

That isn’t what I said so don’t twist my words to make it look as if I agree with you when I categorically don’t. The worst thing that character did was serve a drink.

But you said the series highlighted the appalling misogyny of men. What could be more misogynistic than a man claiming he is a women because he “feels like one”. Surely the only way a man could “feel like a woman” is if he subscribed to the sexist, regressive stereotypes that society uses to define how even should think, act and behave? Theist how could a male have any idea that it feels like to be a woman?

What could be more misogynist than a man claiming to be a woman? You haven’t watched the series, have you? You don’t think raping a 12 year old girl, photographing a badly injured half naked woman and posting the pictures on social media, whispering “I’d like to fuck you” in a woman’s ear, beating a woman up and berating her when she’s sick as a result are misogyny? Are you fucking serious? I’ll take a trans woman over all that any time.

Yeah, shot yourself in the foot there. How is a transwoman going about her day without harming anyone more misogynist than a man who rapes, than the men who used to follow DD1 to school catcalling the most horrific shit about what they would like to do to her? And yet the transwoman is a worse misogynist just by existing. Bloody hell, some people!

LittleBitofBread · 22/10/2025 08:46

This was my point/question too.

I think from how the discussion's gone this character is meant to be a TIM ie it's a role for a man, which is fair enough.

The issue – not 'drama', a genuine issue – would be if a TIM had a role that was written for a woman. Like Dylan Mulvaney's role (tiny I know) in The Buccaneers, where he was clearly written as/meant to be a woman. That is quite obviously taking a job away from a woman and there's nothing funny about it.

Out of interest, has anything from the programme confirmed that it was meant to be a character of a male identifying as a woman?

Or have PPs just assumed that on the basis that he looks so obviously male?

If it is the case, that the trans activists on this thread are arguing that it is a trans character in the basis that he doesn’t ‘pass’, that feels like huge progress as only 5 minutes ago everyone would have been insisting that the psychologist dude with a beard (Alex Drummond) and a penis was definitely a woman through and through. He’s gone very quiet these days - anyone seen him recently?

BundleBoogie · 22/10/2025 16:56

DoinFineIThink · 22/10/2025 10:24

It really is "don't teach the kids about gay" or they might catch the gay as they'll see all their friends doing it social contagion nonsense from back when I was at school, isn't it?!
Just it's "you'll catch trans" panic now instead of "the gay."
Nothing's changed for some, bet some would bloody love that section 28 back in place.

Sexual orientation is not related to staff declared ‘identity’ in any way.

Adopting a ‘gender identity’ has indeed been a very well promoted fad - heavily financed by pharmaceutical companies creating new lifelong patients. A conservative estimate was that one ‘trans’ patient could mean $1,000,000 in revenue for unnecessary medical interventions that destroy their health and fertility.

See the sudden drop off in ‘trans’ identities among college students - it’s not cool any more. We just need to worry for the kids tho have been permanently medically harmed by this. The lawsuits are starting.

BundleBoogie · 22/10/2025 16:59

PurpleParakeet · 22/10/2025 11:49

Not the same at all.

Presumably the people who believe that there is a parallel don't believe that trans people are authentically trans, and that anyone who is identifying as trans is doing so in order to deceive.

Can you explain how it’s different? He felt authentically mixed race.

How is that different to a man ‘authentically’ feeling like he is a woman?

The show Mrs Brown's Boys belongs to the guy who plays the lead. It would seem a bit odd objecting to a man casting his own show where the point is that he is an old school parody.

I don’t know why Stephen Fry is playing Lady Bracknell - he’s not the first man to play the role but taking it on when it should have gone to a woman is entirely on brand for that particular misogynist. I object to that also - older female actors find it notoriously hard to find work.

It's not really about men playing women's parts is it? If it was, we'd all be boycotting trad pantos with dames in, etc.

An odd point to make - the whole point of a panto dame is that it’s a man - the comedic effect wouldn’t work with a woman.

This show was advertised as about women of certain age, menopause and their lives. Shoehorning a man in, whether he is playing a woman or a ‘trans’ character is clearly distracting and irrelevant. Why can’t this have been what it claimed to be - why do they have to push these men into everything?

Define 'trans activists' - is it perchance anyone who doesn't agree 100% with your stance?

I know, it sounds so awful that it’s very tempting to dismiss it as a conspiracy theory but it’s very well documented. The Lib Dem’s received £1 million from a puberty blocker company. Many Labour Party MPs have received a series of smaller donations from individuals linked to trans activist organisations- probably learnt from the bad publicity around the Lib Dems.

Stonewall and lots of the new ‘trans’ organisations that sprang up from nowhere over the last 10 years have received large donations from organisations like the Arcus Foundation (the charitable arm of a huge pharmaceutical company with a keen interest in all things trans).

Where did you think all the money suddenly available for all things trans was coming from (apart from also the UK government)?

AbleMind · 22/10/2025 17:36

This was the best series I've watched in ages! The younger members of the band (Nisha and her sister) are presumably not impacted by menopause either! My husband related to the adoption and aging parents storylines, should he not have watched it?

At this point anyone arguing that it’s perfectly fine for a man to say he’s a woman and take a woman’s job and berate women who object is sounding pretty ‘trans activist y’ to me.

It hasn’t yet been established if it was written as a female character or a trans character as far as I can see so he’s either taken a woman’s job ( my suspicion) or has been shoehorned in unnecessarily to a completely irrelevant drama which is billed about being about menopausal women if a certain age.

And in response to PP about the inclusion of a younger female character - she will go through menopause and has other common female experiences.
