Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Where is your evidence for saying exploitation of girls has reached epidemic proportions?

That poster's "shift" 😕 is apparently over, so hopefully you'll get a response 😁

I don't really want to get into this hideous, unhelpful 'whataboutery'.

Bad people exist everywhere. Undoubtedly some of the bad people are trans. But that doesn't make it OK to judge and persecute all trans people, and spread fear and mistrust.

No better than judging someone because of where they live, where they were born or the colour of their skin.

Completely agree

I didn’t mind the character cringingly crowbarred in -I agree it actually looks a bit dated and silly tbh- but singing in a band about specifically women’s issues -moreover ones that deeply relate to biology ie not the usual song stuff of ‘love n feelings’, but, bleeding, pushing out babies, menopause, and HRT was bizarre????

When I see men go for roles they are not qualified for such as Unison / Labour Women's Officer, when there are several other options available, it's hard not to think they are just trolling women. This is one of those such occasions.

There must have been other parts for this actor that didn't involve being in the women only band. It was deliberate virtue signalling and I agree it will age poorly.

beyond a joke if you ask me. Trans woman are on our television all the time with Raul Paul and other Strictly Dancing etc
Since when was "Raul" Paul trans?!
(I assume you mean Ru Paul)
He's never claimed to be trans as far as I know.

So you are criticising something that actually happens in RL, i.e. people being trans inclusive. You can do that, you can disagree with it, but it is an unpleasant look.

As being ‘trans inclusive’ as you call it means giving away women’s rights, words and in this case, jobs - I’d say it’s perfectly reasonable to object.

At least trans activist pps on this thread aren’t trying to convince us he is actually a woman and admit that he looks very much like the man he is. That seems like progress.

"Taking away jobs" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The drama.

The trans woman is a minor character - don’t let it put you off. We enjoyed it, particularly the last two episodes

BIossomtoes · 22/10/2025 08:40

It’s excellent. The standard of acting and writing is incredibly high. It’s filled with horrifying examples of men’s appalling misogyny and its effects on women yet the barely noticeable presence of a trans woman is causing this furore. It makes no sense.

What do you mean "looks dated"? Has becoming trans gone out of fashion, like crinolines? What the hell are you talking about?

This was my point/question too.

I think from how the discussion's gone this character is meant to be a TIM ie it's a role for a man, which is fair enough.

The issue – not 'drama', a genuine issue – would be if a TIM had a role that was written for a woman. Like Dylan Mulvaney's role (tiny I know) in The Buccaneers, where he was clearly written as/meant to be a woman. That is quite obviously taking a job away from a woman and there's nothing funny about it.

@BeanQuisine In the drama, the main female characters welcome Miranda as a woman. That is in character for them, because they are trans-inclusive.

And I am very glad of it.

The issue with this is, where does one draw the line?

If you think welcoming a man 'as a woman' is a positive thing, are there limits?

Should we be welcoming men 'as women' into single sex changing areas, women's sports, rape crisis centres, domestic violence shelters, women's prisons?

If not, what's the logic behind welcoming men as women in some situations and not others? Are we saying men can sometimes be women and sometimes not?

I wonder what a programme like this is really trying to say to the women watching?

What did you think to the character Hayley in Coronation Street? Did this cauise the same outrage as Miranda?

I was never a Corrie watcher, so I can't remember much about when the character first appeared, tbh.

However, fair to say that was a very different era when it comes to TRA demands. There was no expectation that women should be expected to admit men into their single sex spaces.

It's also fair to say that it's easier to get people to accept TWAW if the character in question is played by a female actor. Given that fact, I doubt the TRAs would see Hayley as a particularly positive depiction of their cause.

Notsofastnow · 22/10/2025 09:13

“I wonder what a programme like this is really trying to say to the women watching?”

There are so many interviews about this series with the cast and the writer - how bout you go read some?

Spoiler: it’s not trying to say men should be in any of those places you mentioned

The thin veil of “it’s all about safeguarding” is stretching about as thin as it can go on this thread.

But then, every time I think that, an MN thread manages to jump the shark even further into blatant transphobia.

I'm not saying this show is saying this character should be in those places.

I'm saying that if people think it's such a positive thing to see a community accept a man 'as a woman' then where do they think we should draw the line?

If a character like this feels they are being 'accepted as a woman' then at what point do you say, 'well actually, you can't be in women's changing rooms/sport/rape crisis groups'?

Anthony Ekundayo Lennon is an actor with White Irish parents who was very much criticised for taking an opportunity he wasn't entitled to https://www.frieze.com/article/white-theatre-director-faces-backlash-after-receiving-funding-intended-black-and-ethnic

despite claiming his appearance, name change and stated identity feelings did entitle him.

And of course there is Rachel Dolezal.

Wrong thread? Or am I missing something g something?

Hugahedgehog · 22/10/2025 09:39

It’s a bit sad when you close your mind to something because of one thing you find unpalatable. I am very old school, yes bra burning era, but the world is changing and we live in a country where we can openly choose to agree/ disagree with something without being imprisoned or shot. I watched it, the trans character is a tiny spec of colour in a real riot of massively larger issues, dark, gritty and more relevant issues and so my opinion of the programme is brilliant. You will realise as you get older ladies, you do become more invisible…be aware! Worth watching for that alone!
