Bloody jellycat teabag

AIBU to be completely done with the Jellycat teabag madness? Honestly, who knew a small stuffed teabag could cause such chaos. The minute they come out, they’re gone – poof – straight into the hands of people who don’t even like them, just want to flog them on Vinted for triple the price.

I wouldn’t even care normally, but my daughter has been utterly brainwashed by this Jellycat cult and now apparently her collection will be incomplete without a pretend teabag. Meanwhile, I’m sat ringing around and scanning social media like a mug while Janice from Kent is selling 5 of them for 65 quid a pop.

And don’t even get me started on the Aldi wooden toys. Blink and you’ve missed them – unless, of course, you want to buy them off someone online who’s decided they’re now luxury limited editions.

Can we not just let kids have toys without turning it into a side hustle? It’s a cuddly teabag, not gold bullion.

Never heard of it/them.
Sounds like some stupid marketing gimmick. Tell your daughter that’s what it is and that only idiots fall for such nonsense.
This is called education.

It's called being a joysucking fun sponge.

Let people be happy in their own ways, FFS. It's hard to be a 14 year old girl

rainbowunicorn22 · 19/10/2025 18:47

They are all cute them but so damn expensive bit of a cult rip off
I did like the festive ones, especially the tree
Look at Beanie Babies, mega priced when new, but now worth very little

Skybluepinky · 19/10/2025 18:49

Aldi wooden toys are terrible quality always loads of moans on the local groups asking if anyone’s else’s broke nothing the first week better to buy less of decent quality products.
People will always over buy the latest trends to sell at a profit, you are the parent so lower your child’s expectations, they will never have the whole set but instead she is emotionally blackmailing you.

And if her biggest obsession is a fabric teabag with eyes, that's soooo much better than a boyfriend with herpes.

I'd embrace the wholesome while you still can op - though I still think Steepy ought to have been plush.

I imagine if she waits a few weeks/months they will be easily available.

Yeah and the hen nto the next kids money making gimmick.

This nonsense has been going for years. Remember the Cabbage Patch stuff.

Manufacturers do this to increase Christmas and other sales.

Gov should put a stop to it. Anti Competitive or whatever.

14?! What happened to drinking cider in a park?

Believe me, it's possible to collect plushies AND drink cider. The two are not mutually exclusive....

iamthehotstepper · 19/10/2025 18:58

I'm 50 and have my 80 year old mum staking out her local garden centre to try and get me a Steepy! 😳

That’s so sad. Life is for experiences and people and living. Not for collecting material goods

Respectfully, to all posters saying this and similar, who made you the arbiter of what should bring joy to others?

And it harm none, do as thou wilt. (Or something).

It's a largely harmless source of joy. Consumerism does harm the planet I agree, but compared to taking numerous flights a year, eating meat, having a pet or worst of all having a child.... Collecting a few plushies is one of the less harmful things one can do for the planet, really.

By the way, not judging those who fly or do the other things I listed above. I fly very rarely but I do eat meat, have pets and a child. All things that hurt the planet but make me happy.

No better than collecting a few plushies.

Which of us is perfect?

SprintBack · 19/10/2025 19:04

I was going to suggest our local stockist, but sold out now too.

Maybe keep an eye if you are local.

Oh my gosh. What a hero! Saving a 14yr old who can’t currently find a teddy tea bag

It's just people being nice to other people. It won't harm them or you.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 19/10/2025 19:18

My mum had a tug of war over the last Cabbage Patch Kid in Toys R Us for me one Christmas. Another mum tried to pull him out of her hands. My mum won. I was very proud of her for standing firm as an 8 year old, but I think if she'd actually tried to steal him from another mum I'd consider that a bridge too far.

I feel you! Am praying Clyde (hipster version) comes back in stock at Selfridges before Christmas 😩

Is the hipster version the one with the hat and scarf? I was there yesterday and there were dozens!

Yes! Were you in the London one? They’re OOS online.

Yes on Bond Street. Hope you manage to get hold of one!

TheBigBagBabes · 19/10/2025 19:27

I stood in a queue for 3 hours with 200 other people (not an exaggeration!) to get one of 56 that my local stockist had to offer (I was lucky and got one!). They said they’ll hopefully be having another stock of them before Christmas, they’re a small business and what Jellycat has done to them is disgusting, they have cut stock to the bare bones and won’t even provide Jellycat carrier bags anymore (the woman on the till told me Jellycat restrict what they can order!) so to see all of these people queuing to buy from a small business was nice even if the whole ‘exclusivity’ thing is a scam!

Figgly · 19/10/2025 19:28

DD has quite a few genuine Jellycat items. We bought a couple of fakes from Ali Express, just to see how they compared. They are very good copies!

You can laugh all you want, but you're the one "sat ringing around and scanning social media like a mug". Surely you must know this isn't entirely normal and healthy.

I'm sure it's a lovely teabag, but it's not worth this level of stress on either your or your daughter's part.

Well you’re fun!! Have you not ever had a child want something really badly and wanted to get them it?

BunnyLake · 19/10/2025 19:30

There’s always been overhyped mania about stuff, remember the cabbage patch kids, even Trivial Pursuit when it first came out was like gold dust and these were long before the internet.

HewasH20 · 19/10/2025 19:34

New delivery in Cornwall today. The lady in the shop unpacked them & expected them all to have gone by the time they closed. They also had a huge dragon and Bartholemew Bear in a snowsuit

Thank you ☺️ I might have to go down early on Tuesday as in work tomorrow.

Okiedokie123 · 19/10/2025 19:49

Wtf is a jellycat at teabag?
<pause whilst I investigate >
Oh. Well they are…. Imho….. not even vaguely cute/attractive. I presume people are only going crazy for them because it’s the latest “must have”. I long for a return to the idea of people buying things they personally love. Not just cos someone else said “buy this, you need this”

Not so long ago people were jumping over each other for bottle of Prime. (I’ve no idea why, what it is). Recently I seen bargain bins of it for less than £1 a bottle and no interest from the shoppers walking past it.

Mixed up world.

True…… was that consumer driven or by the media do you think? I’m thinking the latter.
Im particularly remembering the mad rush for a Buzz Lightyear toy. A Christmas “must have” in the 90s.

Dellaandthedealer · 19/10/2025 19:55

We’ve just donated 134 Beanie Babies to charity bought during the craze back in the 90s. They really didn’t hold their value! My kids couldn’t wait until the next one was ‘born’. Fun at the time though.

Oh bog off you miserable sod. They are popular collectibles that - shock horror- even adults like to buy.

OP is the one saying leave them to kids, so maybe you should be swearing at her, not me Hmm
