Bloody jellycat teabag

AIBU to be completely done with the Jellycat teabag madness? Honestly, who knew a small stuffed teabag could cause such chaos. The minute they come out, they’re gone – poof – straight into the hands of people who don’t even like them, just want to flog them on Vinted for triple the price.

I wouldn’t even care normally, but my daughter has been utterly brainwashed by this Jellycat cult and now apparently her collection will be incomplete without a pretend teabag. Meanwhile, I’m sat ringing around and scanning social media like a mug while Janice from Kent is selling 5 of them for 65 quid a pop.

And don’t even get me started on the Aldi wooden toys. Blink and you’ve missed them – unless, of course, you want to buy them off someone online who’s decided they’re now luxury limited editions.

Can we not just let kids have toys without turning it into a side hustle? It’s a cuddly teabag, not gold bullion.

I am in 40s and I love Jellycat, though I don’t have any. But they are so cute, so I would say you are unreasonable 😅

Islandgirl68 · 20/10/2025 19:28

@Teasforfears i dont understsnd the fuss either, they are cute, but are over priced even at normal retail price.

Some people love to use MN as some kind of online Fight Club.

I think poor old Salem actually wants a jellycat for herself but has missed out. That would explain her rather OTT bitterness and anger about others getting them. Maybe we need to start a campaign #steepyforsalem

Try Vinted. I got my DC’s campfire Jellycat there, new with tags.

That will be fake unfortunately

Surely it’s the same as anything from years ago? Everyone wanted a mr frosty or that Cadbury thing that dispensed mini chocolate etc, there were crazes for putting things on your bike spokes, pots, tamagotchi

jellycat is just the new version, I don’t think children (or teenagers) need teaching a lesson about it!

Yah but I feel like in those days your ma would just go "you're not having it" 😂

I had one friend who had dream phone and she was a local celebrity

Heartish · 21/10/2025 08:05

We were ok financially but my mum said every gift had to be ‘educational’. I still remember the Carebear and Little Pony I would have loved. I am in my fifties and still wonder why she didn’t want to see us happy. It’s of course part of a bigger picture but I love giving my kids presents that make their faces light up. Even though they are now in their 20s!

AngeloMysterioso · 21/10/2025 09:02

@Teasforfearssince you haven’t answered my message I’ll assume you don’t want it now ☹️ that’ll teach me not to do nice things for strangers! Will stick it on Vinted

Claiming jealousy if someone has a different opinion to you is a lazy trope.

I have also specified a number of times, I have no issues with collecting teddies or toys but I do have issues with unethical business practices like Jellycat have. If you disagree with that use proper adult words to debate instead of being ridiculous

Apologies I have messaged you. We have been looking for them in shops hoping to pay RRP, I was surprised at your message that I was a tenner over and then postage on top of that- I do appreciate you thinking of us though!

Here we go with the "I just have genuine concerns about ethical business practices..." crap that always gets trotted out to hide behind on these types of threads lol.
Bigots get "I just have valid and reasonable concerns, honest..."
Bloggers /IGers get " I'm just concerned they're not displaying their adverts properly, honest" ...
When if they're left to it for 5 minutes it becomes clear that all they want to say is stuff like "yeah but I bet she smells of poo" and "have you seen her hair today, what does she think she looks like?!" in peace
Now we have a jelly cat and cuddly toy version 😁

I’ve raised this point multiple times on the thread. Jellycat are well known to have ethical issues with their business practices - including what they did to small independents earlier this year. As well as the enforced scarcity discussed on this thread.

I have no idea what the second half of your post is about it didn’t seem to make much sense. Who smells of poo? If you are suggesting I target influencers (who I don’t follow) to be mean then, no, I don’t. And that’s a very different kettle of fish to raising issues of unethical business practices.

Jellycat: Independent shops devastated as brand pulls supply - BBC News

Jellycat has stopped supplying its plush toys to around 100 independent stores in the UK.

Selling it for a profit isn’t exactly doing @Teasforfearsa favour. Profiteering on these things is just shitty. Our local shop were above RRP and the price increased between the first delivery £27 to second delivery £29.

I think it’s fair enough to have a discussion about capitalism and how ethical it is for a company to behave like this.

What is unpalatable is your vitriol to those who want to buy this toy and your sneering at someone who was trying to help the OP out. Completely unnecessary and distracting from the issue you apparently are concerned about. You have been pointlessly unpleasant and personal when you could have discussed it without condescending sarcasm. Maybe you cooks own that.

Hoppinggreen · 21/10/2025 13:49

Maybe certain people on this thread would like to start one on Capitalism instead? They could fun sponge to their hearts content on there

Was she a war baby? Could it be that as part of it (obv. there may be other issues too) my Mom was the same and she has given it to me too. I’m trying really really hard not to pass the same problem on to my kids. We were all brought up with those issues about food too (can’t leave anything on your plates and so on)

The op’s whole point was around profiteering and creating scarcity though…..

Forgive my lack of knowledge about such things (my children are all grown up in their time it was pogs and tinkywinky) but how can owning a few plush toys be outing? genuine question

I'm guessing she calls her children sweetheart, pickle and spud

Bagsintheboot · 21/10/2025 14:45

OP posts about profiteering and artificial scarcity.

Some posters say not to buy into the hype.

Other posters call them mean and joyless.

One poster comes to the rescue and gets one of these toys for OP. Praise and "aw how lovelys" follow.

OP says they're trying to sell it to her for £10 over the RRP.

This thread is absolutely mad 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 21/10/2025 17:50

Other posters call them mean and joyless.

The former wasn't always worded quite as rationally and politely as that. There were a fair few aggressively rude people posting!

JacknDiane · 21/10/2025 20:56

@Teasforfears, I seen the teabag jellycat in a local shop but it was £39 .
Maybe they vary in price??

Horses7 · 21/10/2025 21:12

There are a LOT of fakes around!

AngeloMysterioso · 22/10/2025 00:04

I bought two of these on Monday - one for OP and one as a gift for my MIL who saw mine and thought it was adorable.

I asked OP for £35 (plus postage - first class small parcel is £5.09) which as you can see from the pictures is how much I paid. I didn’t ask for a single penny more than that. I was unaware of how much the RRP was…

OP asked to see a pic of the receipt, I asked for her email address as I couldn’t work out how to attach a photo in PMs and she then ignored my messages until I replied to her in this thread this morning.

For anyone who’s interested, I stuck it on Vinted after not hearing from OP - again, for the amount I paid - and it sold in less than half an hour. Buyer messaged me to say she was thrilled to find one that was fairly priced!

I look forward to your apologies for the shitty profiteering accusations, whenever you’re ready @Teasforfears@SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease

It's such a shame this thread has ended this way. I guess sometimes doing a good turn for others can end up with a pain in your own ass.

Teasforfears · 22/10/2025 08:46

Good lord. I didn’t accuse you of profiteering? I didn’t ask you to collect one? I just said that I wanted one at RRP because we didn’t want to pay over the odds for one.
I thanked you for thinking of me, and said I will keep an eye out for one at £25.
It was a nice thing to do and I thanked you! I only replied to your message publicly because you put a post up…
