M&S - Could I? Should I?

My son refused point blank to let me buy him this hoodie we spotted in Markies (M&S). It says "you can and you should". Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face. His big sister had similar thoughts.
Do you think the designers at Markies have a dark and twisted sense of humour or are we awful people?

In Exeter in the 70s, M&S was often referred to as Markies. My mother worked there and also called it Markies back then.

Doesn't float my boat op was talking in riddles.
The term Markies would mean nothing to anyone outside Ne Scotland.

Yes, but the Op did put M&s in brackets.

Why on earth do people get so upset about calling it Markies? Vomit emojis the lot.

You are not superior if you call it M&S, it’s still a store on every bog standard high street.

I was brought up calling it Markies, and I will die calling it Markies, although the Union Square branch is not a patch on the original.

dreadful sweatshirt Op.

MrMucker · 18/10/2025 08:43

Blimey what a hideous garment. Someone have the post taken down ffs...I think I've injured my eyes.

QuickPeachPoet · 18/10/2025 08:47

You absolutely shouldn't buy something for someone that they have openly expressed they don't like.

Wishimaywishimight · 18/10/2025 08:47

Are you trying to be funny? You make no sense at all. Are you the 11 year old in this scenario?

Sorry didn't see M&S bit.
Yip original Markies is a miss and the St Nicholas area leaves a lot to be desired.

Pibrea · 18/10/2025 08:58

Marksies

Notmyreality · 18/10/2025 09:01

Incomprehensible nonsense.

oviraptor21 · 18/10/2025 09:28

Indeed.
Pushing ice cream in someone's face is something a kid would do and find funny, not an adult. Everyone else would be annoyed at the mess and the waste of a good ice cream.

PS. Anything in Scotland is north in the context of Mumsnet which is a UK based site.

Then don’t say anything! People are allowed to question something if they don’t understand

I think you’ve misunderstood how a forum works. In the same way people are allowed to question something if they don’t understand, I’m allowed to comment on it if I think they’re being disingenuous just to make someone feel shit.

If you don't find it funny, why not just move on? There are plenty of other threads.

Why don't you MYOB?

YOU commented on my initial post & again & on other people's posts. Fine , nothing stopping you, even though you could just make your own comments on the OP. But then don't tell people to 'move on' when you're doing this.

PerriFuckingSickOfIt · 24/10/2025 16:15

And for those of you buffoons calling it Markies - it’s not called Mark & Spencer is it?!

fatphalange · 24/10/2025 16:37

Back in the 2000s when slogan tees were all the rage I had one from Tammy girl. I liked the colour and design of it, but not the slogan because it didn’t even make any sense. You’ve just reminded me of it! It said, ‘mr softy’ Grin

Cherrytree86 · 24/10/2025 17:30

YABU for using a made up word “smoosh” - talk properly.

Indeed. OP’s fondness for ice creaming her kid’s face, on a thread about slogans prompted me to post. Just a bit of fun.
