M&S - Could I? Should I?

Itwasatry · 17/10/2025 21:08

My son refused point blank to let me buy him this hoodie we spotted in Markies (M&S). It says "you can and you should". Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face. His big sister had similar thoughts.
Do you think the designers at Markies have a dark and twisted sense of humour or are we awful people?

He doesnt like it, surely thats a good enough reason not to buy it.

Why are you being weird about it?

Would you wear something you didnt like?

And it is awful, why design it so there's stripes through the text? And the text "you can and you should" is weird.

And why do you want smoosh ice cream into children's faces?

Weird!

It's a joke

I don’t need to calm down. I’m not het up. But I can see how you may have been confused. Was it the swearing?

I don’t think faux stupidity is clever, amusing or original when its sole purpose is to belittle someone because they aren’t sufficiently excited by the contents of their post. If you weren’t faking your confusion then I wasn’t talking to you. If you read the slogan on the t shirt, you read the original post and you genuinely couldn’t deduce that the OP wanted to push an ice cream in her son’s face, encouraged by the slogan on the top, then fair enough, I don’t know what to say to you.

Edited

I genuinely absolutely agree with you in general, I think all of those same things, people are absolute dicks on here recently, and are horrible to people in really awful situations. Except that’s not what I was doing here, I genuinely thought I was missing something with the icecream thing.

malificent7 · 18/10/2025 05:06

I think its supposed to be motivational.

I think some peoplw should fucking start, after reading the po faced dullard responses on this thread to a rather amusing post from the OP.

Lighten the fuck up.

Edited

Nah you're good. No amount of alcohol would make that amusing.

DiaryofaProvincialLady · 18/10/2025 05:27

Its hideous and cringe AF.

DiaryofaProvincialLady · 18/10/2025 05:30

Pilfer · 17/10/2025 22:56

Who’s scoffing a Mr Whippy and why are they wearing this top? Presumably there’s some cultural reference we’re all missing here. Which probably means 99% of the people that see that top are going to miss it too.

But he's not wearing it, he hates the top and does not want it, seems his mother is planning on buying it and forcing him to anyway though....

HeyThereDelila · 18/10/2025 05:35

It’s a horrible hoodie and you’d be borderline abusive to push an ice cream in to your child’s face.

What a weird thing to even consider, much less post about.

If you don't find it funny, why not just move on? There are plenty of other threads.

Yes, I'm sure she is. Do you always take things literally? 🤪

Can I just say OP, if this

Was your thread, I think it was my favourite ever unintentional 'causing a furore on MN' thread.

But I don't like the hoodie, slogan or no slogan.

Edited

'Picky bits' makes me think of scabs or infected sores.

And I'm with the boy on the t-shirt. Just say 'no' to vertical stripes.

But OP's post is baffling to lots of people. It's the bit about the ice-cream that makes it so bizarre. It's never crossed my mind to shove ice-cream or any other food into my DC's face but having read the responses perhaps it's something lots of people think about doing.

I found that a bit strange but was more 🤨 by (what I read to be) the mirth on OP's part at the idea of the t-shirt appealing to 'creepy' men.

5128gap · 18/10/2025 06:16

How sad that we live in a world where DC are so frightened of abusive perverted men that they see risk at every turn. The message to me is intended to be inspirational, don't doubt yourself, go for it type thing. If I were you I'd be having a chat with him about risk, and where the danger lies and proportionate mitigation as he's clearly concerned about his safety from pedophiles. And obviously don't buy a hoodie he hates.

Financial · 18/10/2025 06:19

Horrid hoodie
I don’t like ice cream

Everyone knows it’s Marksies

Farticus101 · 18/10/2025 06:22

The hoodie is hideous! Listen to your kid as he would probably get beaten up by his peers if you forced him to wear that.

I'm not sure who needs to get a smooshing of ice cream in their face, but it's not the kid! 😁

OnlyOnAFriday · 18/10/2025 06:22

I think there’s enough entitled men and boys in this country who think if they want to do something they’ll just do it without buying them clothes encouraging that mindset. And yes I agree with pp it makes me think of males doing what they want and sexually assaulting women. Even if someone else wasn’t thinking of sexual assault regarding it I still think it’s an awful message. I can do something so I’m going to (regardless of others). I don’t find it motivational, that would be something like “do your best” or “reach for the stars”.

NotUsuallyASheep · 18/10/2025 06:28

I understood the OP. But the OP and I clearly have very very different senses of humour.

sorrynotathome · 18/10/2025 06:34

I feel sorry for her son - brought up so that the first thing that comes to mind is a “creepy old man” and with his mother and sister delighting at the thought of pushing ice cream cones into his face. And no, no-one in England has ever called it “Markies”. Marks’s, yes potentially (although that’s an older demographic).

LlynTegid · 18/10/2025 06:42

You should be proud of your DS and DD for their response, awareness of the possibility of taunting or bullying.

Yep, it’s baffling, not funny.

whimsicallyprickly · 18/10/2025 06:43

Where I live we sometimes call M and S Marksies but never Markies. I had no idea M and S was sometimes called Markies

I dont think the message on the top is a good idea. Your son is very sensible to say no to you

And to anyone who is odd and weird

I think the Dd agreed about smooshing ice cream in the poor kid’s face rather than agreeing with the brother? It’s not a clearly written OP so could be either I guess.

Ratafia · 18/10/2025 07:00

I think I'm missing the joke.

MrsDoubtfire1 · 18/10/2025 07:03

Poor boy. It is really naff and just so uncool. Even I wouldn't wear that and I am an old dear.
