M&S - Could I? Should I?

Itwasatry · 17/10/2025 21:08

My son refused point blank to let me buy him this hoodie we spotted in Markies (M&S). It says "you can and you should". Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face. His big sister had similar thoughts.
Do you think the designers at Markies have a dark and twisted sense of humour or are we awful people?

Sorry to disabuse you of the notion that it's specific to the north, but it's also Markie's in Fife. Has been for years. (I'm in my 60s.)

Is Fife not north?!

Bedtime

Amen to that
what an absolute load of rubbish about “markies” and “ice creams”
get a grip
stop drinking
it’s a hoody

What the Lambrini is happening here now?

I think you mean "What the Buckfast is happening here now?" or "What in the Scotch..." if she's posh 😂

Evolutionarygoals · 18/10/2025 00:20

I call it markies and I'm from East Lothian. I don't really remember it from growing up though, apart from my (Welsh) relatives in England maybe using it? My aunt was ever so elegant though so I thought it was posh. Thinking about it, I referred to it as Markies in work the other day and nobody blinked. I work in Cambridge. Do the English really not call it markies? I've lived here 25 years and not noticed. DH has never said anything and he's from Hampshire. Mind completely blown 🤯

No

Sagaciously · 17/10/2025 21:27

Markies? 🤮

I don’t know where OP is, but here in NE Scotland, M&S is known as Markies.

No need for the sick green face.

PollyBell · 18/10/2025 00:36

Itwasatry · 17/10/2025 21:36

My point is the text "you can and you should" is weird. I don't want to smoosh ice cream into all children's faces. But my son (11) is definitely cheeky enough to warrant a Mr Whippy smooshed in his face as a one off! I mean, it might encourage me to add an extra fiver onto his pocket money but that's a lot less funny

Huh? I genuinely have no idea what is going on

Cherryicecreamx · 18/10/2025 00:46

I looked at it like the Nike "Just do it" slogan

MarxistMags · 18/10/2025 00:49

@Sagaciously Marks and Spencer.

Grin

Your DS is ungrateful, not letting you (and his DSis) have your fun.

PeacefulHouse · 18/10/2025 00:58

Here in Yorkshire it's 'Marks and Sparks' Which must be fairly common as they used it for their loyalty card the 'Sparks card'. Never heard of it referred to as Markies but then I'm not in Scotland so. . . .

Also, no idea what the op is on about. The hoodie is not very attractive I agree.

Thedogscollar · 18/10/2025 01:05

I'm originally from Fife and in my 60s and always heard it referred to as Markies.
Re the hoodie. It's a weird slogan and I wouldn't want to wear it either.

lifeonmars100 · 18/10/2025 01:20

I've read some bizarre and incomprehensible stuff on here, but this is in another league

Soonenough · 18/10/2025 01:28

Jeez lighten up . No need to berate the OP for trying to have a bit of fun here . Whatever happened to Be Kind . Bunch of meanies here lately.

Letsgocamping67 · 18/10/2025 01:30

apart from the fact it’s a hideous stripy\logo combo down in our part of the south east we call it marksies !

egganbacofoil · 17/10/2025 21:43

I just checked the time…..how many drinks so far ?

Too many!

WilfredsPies · 18/10/2025 02:18

Why are some of you pretending that her thread is genuinely beyond your comprehension? How the fuck are so many of you holding down these high paying corporate jobs you all claim to have when you’re acting like she’s not making any sense? If you can see the photo of the top she’s posted, then her thread is perfectly clear to anyone with two brain cells to rub together.

Unless trying to make her feel small was your objective?

WearyAuldWumman · 18/10/2025 02:29

Bluemin · 18/10/2025 00:11

Is Fife not north?!

Definitely not the north of Scotland. It's south of Stonehaven - it's in the central belt of Scotland.

Sooverwork · 18/10/2025 02:48

Tagyoureit · 17/10/2025 21:24

He doesnt like it, surely thats a good enough reason not to buy it.

Why are you being weird about it?

Would you wear something you didnt like?

And it is awful, why design it so there's stripes through the text? And the text "you can and you should" is weird.

And why do you want smoosh ice cream into children's faces?

Weird!

Well said. OP is more odd than that silly hoodie

AutumnCosy2025 · 17/10/2025 21:38

You should give up drinking

I think some peoplw should fucking start, after reading the po faced dullard responses on this thread to a rather amusing post from the OP.

Lighten the fuck up.

BankfieldForever · 18/10/2025 03:48

I’m in North Aberdeenshire and can confirm this is all normal for up here…and this is a perfect example of the God awful clothes Markies (sorry, M&S) has been stocking since the store revamp.

I don’t think people trying to be mean, they’re just really confused 🤣

Er, calm down. I assumed she was referring to a specific joke that I wasn’t aware of. Because the ice cream reference seemed so random, I assumed it was a meme or a comedy sketch I didn’t know. Thanks for the insults though. I’m doing fine at work 😂

PennyRest · 18/10/2025 04:26

Surely your son really didn’t say that- perhaps you were thinking the slogan seemed off and wanted to ask if others agreed- and used the story about your son in case we thought you were a massive pearl-clutcher?
Or I need further info about the fun sucking kid/ ice cream thing

WilfredsPies · 18/10/2025 04:37

I don’t need to calm down. I’m not het up. But I can see how you may have been confused. Was it the swearing?

I don’t think faux stupidity is clever, amusing or original when its sole purpose is to belittle someone because they aren’t sufficiently excited by the contents of their post. If you weren’t faking your confusion then I wasn’t talking to you. If you read the slogan on the t shirt, you read the original post and you genuinely couldn’t deduce that the OP wanted to push an ice cream in her son’s face, encouraged by the slogan on the top, then fair enough, I don’t know what to say to you.
