M&S - Could I? Should I?

My son refused point blank to let me buy him this hoodie we spotted in Markies (M&S). It says "you can and you should". Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face. His big sister had similar thoughts.
Do you think the designers at Markies have a dark and twisted sense of humour or are we awful people?

Is everyone on Mumsnet coked up tonight or something?

I don’t understand what Mr Whippy has got to do with your son expressing an opinion about a hoodie

That's two of us, at least

grumpygrape · 17/10/2025 21:43

Was just going to suggest Friday wine time 🍷

Somehow I think someone is passed that...

This has to be one of the oddest threads I've ever read on here and not in a good way!

Libertysparkle · 17/10/2025 22:21

Sagaciously · 17/10/2025 21:27

Markies? 🤮

That's what I was going to say 🤣

That's local name for M&S in Aberdeen/Shire.

It's simple enough. He's scoffing a Mr Whippy and it's tempting to push it into his face, for a laugh. The message he's wearing is You Can and You Should...

Can I just say OP, if this

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/amibeingunreasonable/4130691-To-want-to-go-to-Markies-for-picky-bits?flipped=1&page=1

Was your thread, I think it was my favourite ever unintentional 'causing a furore on MN' thread.

But I don't like the hoodie, slogan or no slogan.

Edited

🤣🤣🤣

Catpiece · 17/10/2025 22:36

It must be me…

PerriFuckingSickOfIt · 17/10/2025 22:42

I don’t understand OP.

Who’s scoffing a Mr Whippy and why are they wearing this top? Presumably there’s some cultural reference we’re all missing here. Which probably means 99% of the people that see that top are going to miss it too.

BeanQuisine · 17/10/2025 23:01

Dear oh dear, never mind. Turn the telly on and try to cheer up. 😂

(That's in reply to Pilfer and all the other merry souls in here tonight)

Onelifeonly · 17/10/2025 23:03

Made me think it is inviting sexual assault, not an ice cream in the face.

Nope no cultural reference.
The op is from NE Scotland as the term Markies was used.
Whippy cone is just that a whippy cone.

Trying to understand here, Bean, you could’ve always explained…

HelenaWaiting · 17/10/2025 23:12

I don't know if anyone remembers the oh-so-groovy Shared Earth in Manchester? They sold fair trade stuff. I bought one of their t-shirts once. I'm quite tall so looked for a medium, which they didn't have, so got a small. I am not a small-boobed woman so, stretched across my chest instead of "Shared Earth" it just read "Red Ear".

Huh. Fair enough. Whatever floats your boat 😀

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 17/10/2025 23:15

Doesn't float my boat op was talking in riddles.
The term Markies would mean nothing to anyone outside Ne Scotland.

Childanddogmama · 17/10/2025 23:20

I read the whole thread and am none the wiser. What a strange post! And what a waste of time that was!!

"Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face"

One minute op is talking about her son not wanting a creepy man to see him wearing it.

The next minute she's saying she wants to smoosh a Mr whippy into her son's face.

What's the connection between the two sentences? You'd expect her to comment on the creepy men. Not talk about smooshing an ice cream.

It's just so bizarre!

HauntedBungalow · 18/10/2025 00:03

What the Lambrini is happening here now?

WearyAuldWumman · 18/10/2025 00:06

Itwasatry · 17/10/2025 21:41

Sorry to make you barf- Markies is a localised name up here hence M&S in brackets for those of you south of Stonehaven

Sorry to disabuse you of the notion that it's specific to the north, but it's also Markie's in Fife. Has been for years. (I'm in my 60s.)

ninjahamster · 18/10/2025 00:07

This thread is so odd!

CountryChristmas · 18/10/2025 00:09

You can post here, but sometimes you shouldn’t.

Weird.

DiscoBeat · 18/10/2025 00:10

Hmm my children don't like any writing on their clothes, they never have. It's a very odd thing to have written on a child's hoodie!
