M&S - Could I? Should I?

Itwasatry · 17/10/2025 21:08

My son refused point blank to let me buy him this hoodie we spotted in Markies (M&S). It says "you can and you should". Little fun-sucker claimed he'd worry a creepy man would see him wearing it. I would have so enjoyed smooshing a Mr Whippy into his wee face. His big sister had similar thoughts.
Do you think the designers at Markies have a dark and twisted sense of humour or are we awful people?

Can you explain the ice cream bit?

I thought that they were joking about the boy holding an ice cream and what they could do with it. So they ‘should’ push it into his face, as per the message on the top. They Can and Should shove the ice cream in his face.

Exceptionally unamusing though.

Fashion designer here - i don't think it's weird at all. Have you seen Zara kids slogans? They are weird and whacky. Boys slogans tend to be a bit tongue in cheek, I think the tone isn't any different to what's out there on the high street.

When I was at uni it was a real thing on Tumblr for a while to photo zany slogans in places like Zara and H&M.
I saw a little girl with “Love Honey” on her tracksuit at a party the other day.

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on here

I think I'm missing the joke.

Me too. I don't understand the relevance of the ice cream.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/10/2025 07:13

This thread is turning out to be unintentionally funny (to me at least!).

So many posters with crap comprehension skills who can't see that OP was just trying to be funny.

So what if she (and a lot more people it would appear) call M&S Markies (which are indeed dog biscuits in my world)? How can it be so so baffling to you that different places have different nicknames for things? Have you all never left your village or something?!

coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/10/2025 07:20

HardyWeinbergEquation · 18/10/2025 07:10

Me too. I don't understand the relevance of the ice cream.

The slogan says: "You can and you should"

The OP is saying that if her son were to be wearing the top with this slogan on, whilst eating a Mr Whippy (a type of ice cream for those who don't know), she would then be tempted to push the ice cream into his face as a joke.

She would then justify doing this by pointing out that his top says "you can and you should".

This type of joke is known as "slap-stick comedy".

XWKD · 18/10/2025 07:27

"Whooshing a Mr. Whippy in his face" sounds like a euphemism. 🤢

Bipitybopitybo · 18/10/2025 07:33

Why would you waste a mr whippy?

Fife is not the Central Belt.
Fife is a Kingdom.

Ilovebabykangaroo · 18/10/2025 07:50

I’m a Markies person too

Sidebeforeself · 18/10/2025 07:57

WilfredsPies · 18/10/2025 04:37

I don’t need to calm down. I’m not het up. But I can see how you may have been confused. Was it the swearing?

I don’t think faux stupidity is clever, amusing or original when its sole purpose is to belittle someone because they aren’t sufficiently excited by the contents of their post. If you weren’t faking your confusion then I wasn’t talking to you. If you read the slogan on the t shirt, you read the original post and you genuinely couldn’t deduce that the OP wanted to push an ice cream in her son’s face, encouraged by the slogan on the top, then fair enough, I don’t know what to say to you.

Edited

Then don’t say anything! People are allowed to question something if they don’t understand

Craycraycatbaby · 18/10/2025 07:57

I'm more concerned that you're all calling it Markies when it clearly should be Marksies.

IstillloveKingThistle · 18/10/2025 07:59

Sagaciously · 17/10/2025 21:27

Markies? 🤮

My first thought too 🤢😬

IstillloveKingThistle · 18/10/2025 08:00

What an odd thread

JFDIYOLO · 18/10/2025 08:03

It's hideous.

They're right.

And that was weird.

WilfredsPies · 18/10/2025 02:18

Why are some of you pretending that her thread is genuinely beyond your comprehension? How the fuck are so many of you holding down these high paying corporate jobs you all claim to have when you’re acting like she’s not making any sense? If you can see the photo of the top she’s posted, then her thread is perfectly clear to anyone with two brain cells to rub together.

Unless trying to make her feel small was your objective?

This seems to be the norm when anyone posts anything remotely lighthearted nowadays. Lots of sneery responses. I miss the olden days on MN when everyone knew what a jokey post was and joined in.

OP your post made me smile this morning, which I fully understood even though I’m not from Scotland! Although I’m interested to know how old your DS is. I couldn’t even get mine to walk through the door after about age 9!

YourOliveBalonz · 18/10/2025 08:09

Isn’t this a variation of Nike’s ‘just do it’?
Anyway, a ‘creepy man’ would need bloody good eye sight!

She said he’s 11.

Exactly. It's Marksies people, Marksies 😁
I get that the OP is trying (and failing) to be funny but the ice cream and creepy man references just seem bizarre. Guess you had to be there...

Gabby8 · 18/10/2025 08:15

Pilfer · 18/10/2025 04:09

I don’t think people trying to be mean, they’re just really confused 🤣

Yeah I have no idea what, or where in some cases anyone is talking about- promise I’m not po faced I’m just lost! I feel a lot of wine may have been had along side the M&S picky bits tonight!

I mean if you like the hoody Op buy it for yourself.

CharlieKirkRIP · 18/10/2025 08:23

I couldn’t make sense of the op but then I read it in a Rab C Nesbitt accent and it makes perfect sense. Almost.

Thank you.

Still a weird thing to say though!

And still not funny (IMHO).

HonoraBridge · 18/10/2025 08:33

It looks awful (with or without the slogan) and your post is very weird.

BoudicasBoudoir · 18/10/2025 08:34

Fit like, OP quine?

Don’t get the Markies top. He’ll never wear it and it’ll be a waste of money.
