If you're a manager, what do you honestly think of staff going off on mental health sickness?

I'm off at the moment, hopefully only short term but I'm really fretting of what my colleagues and bosses think of me.

Everyone YOU know has deep rooted trauma. That's not always the case for people who go off sick citing poor mental health.

The question posed what what do managers THINK, not what do we do. You're right in that I don't always know whether people have deep rooted trauma, so that's why I follow our policies on this.

But that's different to "what do I think"

Obviously you're free to think what you like but if one of my team appears to be struggling with what I consider everyday work stress, I assume something deeper is probably going on for them rather than just judging them for lacking resilience. Perhaps they have never been in the privileged position to develop much resilience, and that's exactly why they need support

Resilience isn't a symptoms of privilege.

And, like I said, I would follow the policy anyway

Do you not believe anxiety is a real MH condition then? Just because you go into work feeling unwell doesn't mean others are always able to.

Oh stop being so knee jerk !

How do you know your work colleagues aren't having suicidal thoughts themselves? You don't.

Teams pull together and support each other. People bailing in adverse circumstances stays with you and you know you can't rely on them when it counts.

You're either not a manager, or you're a shit one.
