To wonder if DH should appeal parking fine - photo included

Dh went to carpark last week. He parked slightly over the hatching instead of within white lines as he had a passenger and car next to him was quite close to white line. Obviously his parking isn’t great but worth an appeal for £100 fine?

In my local supermarket I’ve actually noticed more and more people parking like this. It’s clearly deliberate in most cases to “avoid” someone possibly getting too close to their car. I actually had a conversation with my husband about it the other day as we counted EIGHT parked into the cross hatches in one car park. Honestly if I wish I’d taken photos now of them all to prove it because it sounds like a ridiculous number.

I wouldn't think so. He could have asked the passenger to get out and then lined up the car within the white lines. He did not have to leave it like that.

I agree - a driver always needs to check they are within the bay lines before leaving the car.

I always appeal- if nothing else they don't get your money straight away.

HisNibs · 14/10/2025 13:25

That's not parked... that's abandoned. Why didn't he park the other way around correctly in the bay, then the passenger would still have been able to get in and out easily?
What do you think your grounds for appeal are?

ghostyslovesheets · 14/10/2025 13:26

If he’d reverse parked his passenger would have had bags of room! Or he could have chosen another space - car next to him is close but within the lines

zeebra · 14/10/2025 13:28

I thought you could only appeal if there was a reason for your error of judgement. i am not sure if there is any excuse for an abandoned car!

TwinklyStork · 14/10/2025 11:42

Nope. Serves him right. HPLAC.

HPLAC??

Linzloopy · 14/10/2025 13:29

HPLAC??

He parked like a cunt.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 14/10/2025 13:31

I'm not really clear on what grounds he would have for the appeal. Best to just pay the fine and not waste his time imo.

He parked like a cunt.

Aaah! Thanks. All I could find by googling was High Performance Liquid Chromatography!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 14/10/2025 13:33

I think he probably got out, saw he was over, thought 'ah fuck it', and risked it.

In this situation his risk taking has not paid off.

Let's assume he speeds a little, or parks like this in other places, or is a little over a parking ticket session - he's probably made up for his other infringements to pay out this time!!

Most people break the rules in some way, the mature thing to do is accept it and pay up and if he can be arsed, park within the lines next time!! (Or risk another fine which is totally his choice!)

Shr3dding · 14/10/2025 13:34

Glitchymn1 · 14/10/2025 13:09

I would- DH has a few times in the past and won.

How crap a parker is he that he's has to do it a lot of times? When will he realize that parking properly is way less hassle 😁, most of us can do it no problem

I don't mean any of this as a criticism btw, I speed occasionally and I just have to hope I don't get pinged.
I also used to park in a 2-hr bay for my 10 HR shift and hope I didn't get a ticket.

Any time I got ticketed I would just pay it! That's the risk I was taking and I made it up by getting all those other unticketed parking sessions.

Don't challenge this OP, he will have to pay more then.

Forgottenidentity · 14/10/2025 11:52

I agree it’s rubbish parking but he didn’t take up 2 spaces

no, but he's parked over the hatched bit which is meant to be kept clear! he's left his front wheels at an angle so clearly hasn't made any attempt to even get between the lines, he's just pulled in and left it. Dumped not parked.

5gymbabe · 14/10/2025 13:50

Could have parked right against the line if passenger had got out

CharlieKirkRIP · 14/10/2025 13:53

That is terrible, absolutely no excuse at all to park like that.

MaurineWayBack · 14/10/2025 14:02

Your photo isn’t clear,
By any chance, is the hatched area the space left next to a disabled place?
Its very common to see cars going over the lines just next to BB spaces 😢😢

If the person was parked too tight to the line on the other side so you couldn’t park within lines, your dh should have parked somewhere else

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 14/10/2025 14:11

I could’ve parked it better than that and I can’t even drive! Maybe he needs some parking practice.

OrigamiOwls · 14/10/2025 14:24

I'm intrigued to know what the grounds for appeal would be?

Seeingadistance · 14/10/2025 14:25

I didn’t know that people got fined for parking like an arsehole in car parks! Brilliant! Is there a reporting hotline I can send photos to? Usually I just post them to the local “parking like a prick” FB groups.

Mumofoneandone · 14/10/2025 15:06

The person in the next door space is basically on the white line, so it is more of a struggle for him to park in his space. Also if he was literally popping in for a sandwich, he'd be spending as long trying to park and not hit another car as he would going in.
Also check if there is a sign clearly stating there is a fine due if people park over the bay markings - if there isn't, I think the fine could be illegal!
It's worth appealing directly to Tesco for help to overturn the fine. (I've had to do it before for different reasons, with success....)

Tryingtokeepgoing · 14/10/2025 15:12

It's clear that the hatching is to allow for visibility so cars and pedestrians can have better visibility and the car park is safer. The VW in the picture is not only parked across the hatchings, but also sticking out of the back of the space as well. So purely on safety grounds the ticket is deserved IMO. Parking that badly is quite an achievement when almost all VWs sold in the last 10 years will park themselves based on my hire car experiences!!

Skybluepinky · 14/10/2025 15:28

He knew what he was doing, how can he appeal when he isn’t in the parking space you are worse than him if you think this is acceptable.

tinyspiny · 14/10/2025 15:35

It doesn’t look like he’s ‘parked’ at all it looks like he’s pulled in quickly and then just abandoned it wherever it landed , which is likely the truth . Pay the fine .

TheHairInClaudiasEyes · 14/10/2025 15:42

I’d go back and check for any signage first, if it refers to being within a marked bay I don’t think I’d bother but if the signs are contradictory, ambiguous or difficult to read (up a 10 ft lamppost) then I would appeal. Although he has parked on the hatchings slightly it doesn’t look like he would actually be obstructing anyone. I’d even go so far as to find out the dimensions of emergency vehicles to see if they could pass freely.
