Jodie Turner-Smith Graham Norton

Just watched the Graham Norton show with Jodie Turner-Smith AIBU or was she utterly obnoxious? Every single move she made was the sickly sweet looking at the camera for attention. Whenever any other celebrity has the spotlight she interjected and tried to bring the attention back to her. Her whole time on the show was pathetic acting for attention and extremely false.

Did anyone else see this or AIBU?

There’s a particular sort of collective neck twitch that happens on Mumsnet when a woman is all three: stunning, successful and unambiguously Black. Commenters start qualifying their praise or picking apart tiny things, like they can’t quite process it.

They’re fine with mixed race or ethnically ambiguous Zendaya type beauty, but once it’s someone like Anok Yai or Jodie, the tone changes. Suddenly she’s “not that special”, or they start hedging the language, qualifying their admiration, or shifting the conversation to something else entirely. There was a thread about Anok earlier this year that went properly odd. Think I’ll try to dig it up.

My SIL is unambiguously black. She’s better looking than JTS. Am I allowed to have that opinion?

Nope not seeing that at all

It's not surprising different people see things differently, so 🤷🏾‍♀️.

It provided great entertainment, that one. I really can't help but smh at some of the ridiculousness.

She had a slightly odd manner at times but was quite funny, didn’t speak over anyone, in fact she spoke slightly less than some of the other guests, wasn’t louder than the other guests and she didn’t look at the camera any more than Greta Lee did.

I agree. She didn't speak nearly as much as Greta Lee, didn't strike poses any more than Taylor Swift, and was either cracking jokes or saying nice things about other people.

PoliteSquid · 19/10/2025 22:33

nomas · 19/10/2025 21:28

She spoke less than anyone else and you found her the most annoying? That is bloody weird.

She spoke over people, fawned all over Taylor Swift, kept looking at the camera and pouting… it was embarrassing.

I think we were watching an entirely different show!!!

Erm.

I'm black. And I've seen more beautiful.women on the school run this morning.

This adulation is weird.

I thought the exact same, I’d never seen her interviewed before and was surprised at how unlikeable she came across. And so much name dropping.

Exactly this “oh I was at that party too, we’re SUCH good mates all us famous people” She physically leant over another guest and turned her back on another when he spoke.

It’s sad, but also very funny. 🤣

‘I have a Black SIL who is prettier than her’ may be my favourite.

What fawning thing did she say to Taylor that Taylor didn't say back? Confused

I have a black bil who is prettier than her.

There's also a particular sort that objectify someone who is beautiful and black, it is the converse to what you're speaking of but the root is the same.

The compliments are just that bit too over the top, there is this sense of othering and objectification. Yes you may have called her beautiful but the way in which you've said it makes me feel like you would have said "she's so exotic!" 15 years ago.

nomas · 19/10/2025 22:51

Exactly this “oh I was at that party too, we’re SUCH good mates all us famous people” She physically leant over another guest and turned her back on another when he spoke.

But they were all doing it. Taylor started it off:

Taylor: We [me and Jodie] met at the Gold party.
Jodie: No, it was at Madonna's party.
Taylor: I think it was at Beyonce's party
Greta: I was at Beyonce's party! You weren't at Beyonce's party, Taylor
Taylor: We have to link up and get a group chat going

So why have you turned three media luvvies chatting away into a criticism of only the black woman?

WindOfUserNameChange · 19/10/2025 22:52

What on earth? Did we watch the same programme? I'd never heard of her but was in a mood for some serious bitching about someone seriously obnoxious so I just watched the entire show. All 49min of it and I just don't get what you are talking about. She didn't steak the spotlight of anyone. She barely interjected in other people's segments. Certainly not more than the other guests. She did flick her hair a lot and looked at the camera a few times but if i hadnt read your post j wouldn't even have noticed it. What on earth has that poor woman done to you?

Any way What was much more interesting was how likeable taylor swift was. I dont like her music as I find it insipid but I loved what she said about having to make an effort and putting on an amazing show because people made an effort to go and see her. 😊

Fizbosshoes · 19/10/2025 22:53

I watched it and the only thing that stuck out for me, was how different TS looked, I didnt notice her being rude or attention seeking

APTPT · 19/10/2025 22:55

Is that poster in good faith who has now spelt out "KKK" across three posts?

I don't know who this actress is, but she is no Anok. So what? Models are generally pretty shit actresses, Lauren Bacall aside. I admire actresses more.

You would have to get me so pissed and so high to get me to sit politely while plastic-faced Taylor spouted inanities for hours, so she gets a pass on that from me.

Agreed about both Jodie and Taylor.

And even if people thought Joe flicked her hair or looked at the camera, wouldn't nervousness be more likely, given she spoke much less than the others?

I’m a Black woman who thinks another Black woman is astonishingly beautiful. But, you run with ‘othering and objectification’ if it makes you feel better. 🤣

I can’t speak as to individual posters here, but I’ve definitely seen a certain type of tryhard white woman do this a lot. It’s not enough for them to say that a black woman is pretty or even beautiful - she has to be stunning, breathtaking, one of the most beautiful women ever. Yes, yes, you can see beyond white-centric beauty norms. Pat yourself on the back.

AnxiousAnnieeeeeeeeee · 19/10/2025 23:43

I watched it live and thought she was quite strange - I don’t know her at all so wasn’t sure if it was just the way she is or whether she was drunk. I felt she was quite nervous and trying too hard? I found her low level
irritating at the time.

p.s Anok is stunning. I’m not sure though why we are commenting on appearances as though being beautiful makes it ok to behave in certain ways! Behaving like a fanny whether black, white, beautiful or not = behaving like a fanny!

WeeGeeBored · 19/10/2025 23:53

Thunderpants88 · 19/10/2025 02:07

It was like she was totally oblivious that the other guests were there to speak. She acted like she was on a catwalk while sitting on the sofa. Just really really off behaviour. I am not a swiftie but there is Taylor being funny and respectful to other stars, giving them their time to speak and she sat back (rightly so!) and didn’t make it all about her. Jodie was so loud and rude and didn’t seem to engage with the other people except to be really loud. Eugh I don’t like people that do that-on TV or in life in general.

I wondered if she was high / drunk too

Have they edited the show? I just watched it because of everyone’s comments and I didn’t see this. She seemed a bit on the outside as though she was being left out and was trying to make her presence felt. Some beautiful people don’t have to talk because people are intimidated by their looks so that perhaps explains why she seemed to be doing something she wasn’t used to. She didn’t come across as obnoxious. I thought the comment the singer made about her baby’s first word being “cunt” incredibly rude. She seemed upset about that and took it seriously rather than as a joke. But no she was not as polished as the others. Poor woman.

GreySkySummer · 19/10/2025 22:10

In what way was it bad faith?

It wasn't, but they're seems to be a new thing on mumsnet where if racism or bias is pointed out posters will try to denigrate it by pretending they are oh so bored of being accused of racism and act like it's a tired old accusation that is beneath them even engaging with. It's a trick used by men against women pointing out sexism, which some women have now seized on and used it to belittle any discussion about racism.

If you're tired of being accused of racism perhaps there's a reason.
