Omg! Amazon driver just tried to come into my house!!!

So I’m sat at home, on my own, reading.
Suddenly my front door is VERY forcibly trying to be opened, it made a huge racket and I immediately thought someone was trying to break in!
The door wasn’t locked, but thankfully I have a child safety latch on the door, which I always use.
I go to the door and can see through the glass it’s an Amazon delivery man.
I open the door, and ask what the hell he is doing, trying to get into my house.
He replies he does it all the time, and it’s my fault as my settings on Amazon say front door/porch.
I am fuming at this point, and tell him it’s totally unacceptable, I’m at home alone, and never have I had someone try to enter my house before to deliver a parcel!
After a few more choice words from me, he gives me the parcel and says he will be reporting ME!
Obviously I immediately reported it to Amazon, who are taking it very seriously.
As I said to them, I’m an assertive person who can stand up for themselves, what if the homeowner had been someone more vulnerable?
So am I being unreasonable to expect that delivery men DONT try to access your property?!

Again, I don’t have a porch, he definitely didn’t think it was a porch as it’s quite clearly a front door.
And I definitely don’t need to “chill”, a complete stranger tried to walk into my house, when I’m at home alone.

But you do if your delivery instructions state front door/porch!! He was following his instructions. I know a few people ( our delivery drivers never change unless on sick etc) who are happy for parcels to be lifted inside the front door instead of the doorstep on a busy road.

😂😂 Thank you for the mental vignette this provided!

I had a delivery from a pharmacist posted through and open bedroom window into an unused bedroom.

MaidOfSteel · 11/10/2025 19:31

You could arrange to pick up your parcels at one of those multi-locker things, then the drivers couldn’t be mistaken about delivery choices.

Get a grip! Dramatic nonsense.

Agreed!

SEmyarse · 11/10/2025 19:35

Don't know what the options are for amazon, but at evri SO many people divert to an enclosed porch when they don't have one. They almost always want me to leave it by the door, which I technically can't do, but mostly do with a fudged photo and cross my fingers that it doesn't go walkies, because that'd be on me, even though I'm just trying to do what the customer wants.

Sometimes it's really clear, but some porches are completely inset into the building, so when someone's put enclosed porch I usually try. Otherwise I'm risking leaving it somewhere insecure.

OP says they don't have a porch, but didn't say this in the initial post. You'd think this would have been a very important clarification at the point that the driver mentioned it. The driver says this was his instruction, wouldn't the OP have corrected him at that point. Not mentioned until people start pointing out that trying a door to look for a porch is quite reasonable.

My delivery instructions state to leave outside front door if I’m not in.
Which I was.
It doesn’t say don’t bother knocking, don’t bother ringing bell, just forcibly try to open front door, scaring the shit out of occupant sat quietly reading, to then think someone’s trying to break into the house, as she obviously doesn’t know it’s Amazon.
Hope this helps.

I did try to correct him.
I told him that the instructions were to leave outside door.
He then became very belligerent that I was obviously upset with him.
And said he would report me…what for?
Believe it or not, a complete stranger trying to forcibly enter my house was quite upsetting, fortunately Amazon have seemed to take my complaint seriously.

I think people defending the driver are picturing it as if he made an honest mistake. I don't think it sounds like he did. The trying of the door with no knocking, lying about the delivery instructions saying porch, then saying he'll report the op, all suggests dodgy to me and I think he was trying to scare you into not reporting/gaslight you into thinking it was your own error that caused the issue. The thing I'd be suspicious of is that he's scouting for doors that are rountinely left unlocked/easy to open.

Endorewitch · 11/10/2025 19:43

First you say you have a porch. Instructions front door/porch. Then you say you havent a porch. If you havent a porch ,but instructions say you have, the guy was obviously confused.
I think an honest mistake ,but upsetting .

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 11/10/2025 19:45

I understand. We get delivery drivers doing that in our house, and we have a dog that could bolt. Makes me so cross. We've changed settings on our accounts and it still happens. We lock the door 90% of the time, but sometimes the kids forget.
I've fallen out with many delivery drivers

Ive never had a porch!

I think it's amazon that no longer gives you an option to select enclosed porch like they used to and now only lets you select front door. Annoying.

That crossed my mind too tbh.
And he was quite aggressive when I called him out on it, if it was a genuine mistake in his behalf why not just apologise?
I probably looked like a bloody lunatic yelling at him in my dressing gown, but I was just so mad that he aggressively tried to open the door without even knocking!

Sorry this has happened OP, and for the crazy replies.

I mostly find mumsnet a really helpful place but every now and then there's a thread which I can't get my head around.

I'm tapping out. Despite the replies, the poll shows most agree with you (don't blame them for not going into the lions den - I normally refrain!)

Hope Amazon get back to you with a resolution soon

He didn’t knock, he didn’t use my doorbell, he tried very forcibly to enter my property, using such force that I thought someone was trying to break in.
You can’t see that it was very unsettling for me, as a woman at home alone?
A complete stranger trying to enter my house?
Thankfully Amazon have taken it a lot more seriously, and are starting a formal complaint process against the driver.

Poor driver trying to make a living ffs

Sunflower1650 · 11/10/2025 19:51

I once posted on AIBU because whilst I was home with my baby at the time (he’s now 3) an Amazon driver came round the back of the house, through my back door into the kitchen and left a parcel in the middle of my kitchen floor. He didn’t even try and knock on the front door (like they usually do) and my safe place was set to outbuilding/shed. Our back door is half glass and clearly goes straight into the kitchen, it couldn’t be confused for an outbuilding or porch. He had absolutely no reason to physically come into the house. On my post I asked if I should complain to Amazon because I was a bit shook up, and everyone said I was being unreasonable and in future I should keep my back door locked!

what do you think he was actually planning on doing?

Other than drop the parcel and rush to the next job...

Your door can't be opened, he didn't come inside, what really is the big deal?
Postmen and delivery guys banging on my door instead of ringing the doorbell do annoy me, but come on, get a grip. No need to be so agitated.

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 11/10/2025 19:53

We have a box at the front door for parcels and if it’s too big for the box they usually leave it on top but both Amazon and our postman sometimes pop it in the front door. I didn’t realise it wasn’t a thing.

DreamyTealGuide · 11/10/2025 19:53

he made a mistake, or you did

He was aggressive and 'why not just apologise'? 😆

In your own words you must have looked like a lunatic, yelling at him in your dressing gown. Sounds like he reacted in kind. As if he's going to meekly apologise when you were aggressively ranting at him!

PrimoPiatti · 11/10/2025 19:55

It happened to me a few months ago, I watched the entry it on CCTV, unfortunately because I was watching on screen, it did not record. Because there was no recording Amz did not really take it that seriously, they pretended to, and launched an 'investigation', but that just faded away to nothing with no one left to contact. Waste of time.
