Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

I don't really notice other people's washing powder smells but if I buy something off vinted or get given stuff the smell of other people's washing powder makes me gag

menopausalfart · 10/10/2025 18:15

My sense of smell has become really acute. I can't tolerate strong smells anymore as they bring on a migraine.

The smell of Poison Perfume used to make me gag

GiddyDog · 10/10/2025 18:26

L'air du temps 🤮 I had a colleague who would douse herself in it and we worked in very close quarters so couldn't get away from the smell, it made me nauseous. That was years ago and I never actually knew what it was till I encountered someone wearing it recently and asked what scent she had on (did not disclose that I was asking because I hate it!).
Don't really mind smelling washing powder etc or most other perfumes.

Same ! My auntie wore it in the 80s/90s 🤢

Goodadvice1980 · 10/10/2025 18:30

Why people spend a fortune to spray toxic chemicals on themselves is beyond me 🤦‍♀️ the whole beauty industry is toxic (and I say that as someone who modelled for a while in their twenties).

Fattitude · 10/10/2025 18:38

Dior Poison is also the one which made me gag.

My boss used to wear a men's sandalwood fragrance which combined with his body scent to make a kind of rotten fruit smell which was awful. Another guy used to spray one of the vetivert fragrances on himself in the office until one of my colleagues had an asthma attack. It smelled like cleaning fluid.

Scent-wearers need to understand that perfumes interact with your individual body scent and don't smell the same on different people: what smells pleasant on one person's skin can smell rancid on someone else.

And commercial perfumes go off, many of them quite quckly. What's left behind is the musty, degraded scent and some alcohol, but some people don't seem to notice and keep wearing it.

Does that include farts?

I detest the fabric softeners smells I've come across. I wish I could confiscate them from my neighbours. 🤣

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 10/10/2025 19:44

On a sidenote I wish charity shops would stop drenching their clothes in Febreze, the smell of which seems to take at least a couple of washes to shift, lol.

tsmainsqueeze · 10/10/2025 19:44

Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

AgnesX · 10/10/2025 19:46

Red Door ( Estée Lauder?) thankyou office colleague (not)
White Linen mixed with Lysol (hospital nurse colleagues)
Eau Sauvage - friend on whom it smelled like garlic

Apart from just being yuck, because people drowned themselves in them. It just needs a skoosh not a bucket!

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 10/10/2025 19:46

Surviving the morning cloud of Lynx Africa, for anyone with teenage boys.

Terrribletwos · 10/10/2025 19:46

Alien...bloody hate it. It smells like zoflora.

AbbeyGrange · 10/10/2025 19:50

AbbeyGrange · 10/10/2025 19:51

Oh yes Red Door too

thenightsky · 10/10/2025 19:51

Poison was vile. It used to be everywhere, giving me headache, but luckily seems to be rare nowadays.

I hate Body Shop Dewberry reminds me of when my office was next door to a married bloke who was shagging a junior colleague who used to drench herself in Dewberry before locking herself in with him at lunchtimes.

menopausalfart · 10/10/2025 19:52

@FilterBubble Nothing more natural. 😝
I

Highlighta · 10/10/2025 19:53

Baccarat Rogue and it's 100 dupes.

I can smell if someone is wearing it in a shop and we are not even in the same aisle.

Awful stuff.

dumberthanaboxofrocks · 10/10/2025 19:53

Angel. Smells of unhappiness.

nbee84 · 10/10/2025 19:57

Detest Cerrutti 1881 - I think it smells like perfume that's gone off.

menopausalfart · 10/10/2025 19:58

I'm unable to tolerate chemical air fresheners, especially those that hang in the car.
Any cleaning solution, such as Zoflora, which hits the back of the throat they're so strong. Also, fabric conditioner. I've not used any for years.

Because we like it?

I love perfume, absolutely love it. I wear different scents each day depending on my mood and the weather. I lean towards niche brands and have different perfumes for different times of the year. I have just brought out my autumn/winter bottles and I'm genuinely excited to wear them all again after six months of different smells.

Wearing perfume brings me huge joy. And when I feel down or ugly or just not myself, a spray of something I love really gives me a boost. Call me shallow, but that's what I like. I even have bedtime scents that relax me and make me feel warm and safe. Make of that what you will.

And as someone who works with the beauty industry, not all of it is as toxic as you believe.

There's a middle ground between overusing washing powders, over-spraying a very strong perfume etc and being a sweet child of nature smelling of just skin and maybe a subtle flower. It isn't one or the other. The only time I have been overwhelmed by smell is when a yoga teacher popped a lavender bag on my eyes during Savasana. I'm not overly keen on lavender at the best of times but this was so doused in lavender oil it made me exclaim a very non-yogic "fuck me that's hideous."

Cardomomle · 10/10/2025 20:02

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream smells absolutely vile. I've no idea how anyone could use it.
Chanel No5, and it's cheap dupe, L'Aimant by Coty.
I don't mind any washing powders or softeners, they tend to wear off, imo.
I wear Chanel Mademoiselle, Cristalle or Allure.

CraftyNavySeal · 10/10/2025 20:04

I’ve completely gone off scented deodorant, trauma from being a sweaty Betty means I automatically associate deodorant scents with BO.

I also find that some products have a really random off putting note that apparently only I can smell. Dove body wash smells slightly of bananas and I have a body lotion that smells of white wine.
