National Trust & tampons

NT have made free tampons available in the gents' toilets in a castle in the Lake District. Not unisex toilets, but actual gents.

Not just any tampons, but vegan tampons (WTF are they?).
And they're also available in the ladies.

YABU They are demonstrating what a kind, caring organisation they are, & covering their arses.

YANBU They are bonkers, tossers... add your own words.

God, I’m about as Terfy as they come, but even I recognise that there may be trans men who chose to use the men’s toilet and may have use for sanitary products.

I guess that less than 10% of women are trans men. Does the NT bend over backwards for other minority groups?

Yes grrrr world getting better for people grrrr don't like it grrrrr everyone shoukd suffer like me grunble grumble

No, the longer gender ideology survives, propped up by silly people likes those at the NT, the worse the world is for young gender non conforming people. The more people battle the SC ruling and the findings of the Cass report the longer this confusion drags out. The more they are lied to, told they can swap sex with drugs and surgery, told that anyone who doesn't see them as their new identity and doesn't use their new pronouns hates them and wants them dead, the worse their mental health will be. So this isn't a massive thing, but its just another stupid move by people who should know better.

@BundleBoogie

Regardless of what people personally think on the transgender subject, the fact is that transgender men do use the men's toilets Since transgender men can and do get period, the tampons have been placed there so that transmen can use them if need be.

The point is that they shouldn’t be using the mens toilets. Men deserve as much privacy as women.

My FiL would literally have another heart attack if he walked into the mens and a girl was in there. Remember, despite the regular wheeling out of carefully posed photos, very few of these girls ‘pass’ irl.

Hacklicker · 10/10/2025 23:16

I have seen this attitude on mumsnet, where women and men both act like men will dissolve on contact with a tampon wrapper. I have a nice, normal husband however, and despite him having passed me sanitary products on more than one occasion he remains stubbornly undissolved, and his penis hasn't fallen off or anything.

That odd that you thought your husbands penis might fall off - that must have been a worry for you.

We still haven’t had the question answered as to what on earth the woman is going to do with these tampons procured by her husband if she can’t access a toilet as in the above example. They are not a discreet thing to use in a public place. Especially if she is bleeding through her clothes.

Good point. I think it is < 0.5% of women though.

And obviously far fewer then that would visit a National Trust venue.

WTDress · 11/10/2025 06:49

Yes isn’t it brilliant that women (even ones that identify as men) can now access free sanitary products?

But given women must not be in the men’s toilets, regardless of how they identify, there is no need to have tampons in there.

WTDress · 11/10/2025 06:44

Please spare us your ignorance. The SC ruling makes it abundantly clear that trans-identified females have no place in men’s single sex toilets!

LakieLady · 11/10/2025 08:07

towhoknowswhere · 10/10/2025 18:09

My thoughts?

Brilliant that a trans man will have access to sanitary protection if they’re caught short.

What are you hoping to achieve from this thread op? 🙄

I don't see a problem with it, either. A lot of women would kick off if they encountered a trans man in the women's toilets, so I'd have thought this would be preferable from their point of view.

HeadNorth · 11/10/2025 08:13

I cannot belive there are so many posts about this obviously rage bait article by the Telegraph. Trans people/immigrants/Meghan Markle - pick your preferred target and the Telegraph/Daily Mail/X will happily fuel your hate.

The census says around 0.1% of women are trans men and I suspect that not all trans men would use the men's toilets.

How have you turned a fact into rage bait?

The NT has become incredibly woke and their volunteers are leaving in droves. One reason a while back was they were being forced to wear 'rainbow' LBGT...lanyards.

GirlonaCloud · 11/10/2025 08:30

Trans men should carry their own tampons or san pro like most women do.

Is that too much to ask?

I suspect some are taking hormone treatment anyway which makes periods unlikely.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/10/2025 09:05

As long as they are also available in the ladies, it's kind of a non issue. I imagine the rate of use is going to be so low that the ongoing replacement costs will be minimal.

This is not about tampons in the ladies’ or cost.

The LAW is clear: single sex facilities are just that, for one sex only. Trans-identified men are male and trans-identified women are female.

This is hugely important for a number of reasons, which have been covered in detail in the public debate on this topic. Please inform yourself.

If there are females in the male toilet, that's for males to object to if they wish. I would suport their legal right to object, but it's not on me (or any woman) to objecton their behalf, as we are not the worlds caretakers. Therefore to me, a box of tampons in thegents is a non issue.

What I actually care about is what or who is in the female toilet. Putting a box of tampons in the gents doesn't (directly) impact that, so IMO isn't the Hill to die on.

Happyjoe · 11/10/2025 10:04

And still women, so must stay out of the men’s

That was... irrelevant.

Men have a right to privacy and I doubt they'd be thrilled at the idea of a woman going into the loos, past the row of urinals, even if she was dressed as a man.

The law is that we all have to use toilets according to our biology at birth.

Trans men should be using the women's loos.

Are you muddled up?

A trans man is a woman.
A trans woman is a man.

@BundleBoogie

That's something that people have different opinions on - those who run the National Trust obviously think it's okay for transmen to use the men's toilets. That's the reasoning for the placement of the tampons.

"Trans men should carry their own tampons or san pro like most women do."\

Many probably do carry their own tampons, but I'm sure almost everyone - transmen AND women - have occasions when they simply slip up and forget. Periods can sometimes come a bit early and maybe they're not quite expecting it yet.

I know there have been times when my period has started and I had no sanitary protection because I was expecting it to be a bit later. On one day, I'd arrived at the charity shop in which I volunteer, had gone to the toilet and found blood all over my underwear.

I had to go back out and buy both sanitary towels AND fresh underwear.

The solution is to ensure every handbag you use has a tampon /pad in it. And leave it there. Put it in your make up bag or the zip pocket in the bag (if it has one.)

It's not complicated.

Shineonyoucrazy · 11/10/2025 10:42

Transmen who take Testosterone don’t need tampons as periods stop. Yes there will of course be some non medically transitioning transmen who may need one, but no one would object to such gender non conforming woman going into the women’s toilets (I do it all the time!) . It seems very performative of NT who should be looking after old buildings. My guess is the budget to stock all NT men’s toilets with vegan tampons is several hundred quid a year, so it’s not zero cost.

@GirlonaCloud

I agree that that's a good solution, but realistically people do forget these things. Maybe 98% of the time anyone who needs tampons or pads has one on hand about their person - but people make mistakes and things slip their mind.

I agree with you, I just don't see it as my job to worry about men's rights, the men are more then capable of doing so if they wish. I'm not willing to take on the role of suport human so won't be fighting for mens rights on their behalf.

ERthree · 11/10/2025 10:53

Men don't have periods so why the need for SanPro in the male toilets?
