Just saw this on FB, a former classmate wishing his son a happy dia-versary on the anniversary of getting diagnosed with diabetes....

Like is it just me it is this weird/inappropriate/cringe....

YABU- she's celebrating her son
YANBU- she shouldn't be posting about his personal medical information, its weird and not everything needs a # 🙄🙄

Everyone is fully aware of what diabetes is.

No they aren’t. People think you get diabetes from eating too many sweets or because you eat too much.

Or they put on a Libre sensor for a week to see what spikes their glucose levels and think it’s the same.

A lot of people have no idea that Type 1 is an autoimmune condition where your pancreas stops working and without insulin and life saving technology you would die. Anyone can develop it.

I’m also bloody tired as I was up most of the night treating my child’s hypos.

Birthdays, Easter, baptisms (or equivalent) Christmas, weddings, wedding anniversaries, funerals. These are the only legitimate celebrations in my opinion. Everything else is just a reflection of consumerism manipulating a culture of excessive celebration for its own gain. If you celebrate at every opportunity, it all loses its meaning.

What is commercial about a mother celebrating another year of keeping her T1 child alive?

& just FYI your opinion on what is a 'legitimate' celebration counts for absolutely nothing. You celebrate what matters to you & MYOB about what others celebrate.

AngelinaFibres · 10/10/2025 08:42

My youngest son was diagnosed at 13 he's 31 now. My brother was diagnosed at 14 , he's 59 now . Neither would be here ( and neither would my sons 2 beautiful children) without the wonderful team who developed insulin . My son was blue lighted to hospital 3 days before his 14th birthday so that date is easy to remember. We refer to it as Betty disease in our family.

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 10/10/2025 08:48

@Libre2 I hope your son has a great residential!

No one else gets the excitement of seeing a Type 1 diabetic in the wild either, unless you are one. It’s like a secret club you didn’t ask to join.

We went to see Cabaret with Rhea Norwood and she had a CGM on and it made my daughter's day.

Actually a lot of people do thats why t1s get a lot of stigma.
If i had a pound for everytime I heard “sugar caused your diabetes” I would be a millionaire right now. People get t1 & t2 mixed up. (Even though eating sugar isnt even the cause for most type twos neither!)

Because a lot of people don't know, ,you might but you don't speak for everyone
You would be surprised by the ignorance, some people honestly think a change of diet etc can cure type1,I even saw it on a type 1 Facebook group a poster said they were controlling their Diabetes with diet and didn't need insulin!

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/10/2025 09:00

Should of seen the comments when barbie released the diabetic barbie. The amount of ignorance of those posts about the causes of diabetes was unreal.

im so pleased for your son!

Completely off topic, but is his neurologist NHS or private & how did you find them/where are they?

MY GP & I can't get my balance of meds right & I currently have NO quality of life.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you get sorted soon. After a long NHS wait, we went private to our nearest Nuffield. Our NHS GP has now taken on his medication.

Onelifeonly · 10/10/2025 09:20

You don't understand it because you're not living it (nor am I, come to that). But why judge something you don't understand? It's not something wildly shocking or abusive.

Only Christian holidays count?

How very Christian of you…

Explain it to who a load of randoms on your facebook. If someone is caring for your child you need to discuss your child's needs face to face not post it on Facebook. "Celebrating your child's dia versary is all about social media likes and for a load of people to say wow aren't you amazing what a hero 🙄

You sound jealous of parents with kids who have medical needs. It’s really fucking weird.

Thank you. I'll look into Nuffield & hope to find someone as good x

it would be amazing to get it sorted. I have a couple of issues due to the actual stroke, but my major problem is the medication I'm on now xx

Thanks for the correction (albeit pretty aggresive). Other religious holidays are also legitimate from my point of view.

Nobody has compared it to type 2 thats completely different. Wow how lovely that your child is able to go on a residential trip a dream for a lot of parents with disabled children who can't even leave the house. Your username kind of proves my point about people making their diagnosis their full personality

Edited

I know - it is lovely and I am really grateful he is able to go. I am massively grateful that he got diagnosed in a timely manner, massively grateful to Banting et al for insulin, massively grateful to the NHS for the thousands they spend on up-to-date tech. Hence the small celebration some families have once a year.

Birthdays = basically congratulations you made it through another year without dying.

Diaversary = congratulations you made it through another year without dying and a whole load of blood, sweat, tears and thinking went into making that happen.

@youalrightI am sorry that you are obviously not alright but hope you will be soon.

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/10/2025 13:28

i think @youalright is just a sad troll.

Travelfairy · 10/10/2025 22:35

I don't think anyone is doubting its tough have T1 Diabetes. Especially for young children.
I do think lengthly posts would be better kept within FB groups for that. It just doesn't sit well with me sharing detailed info about a child's medical info on SM.

Also, he has diabetes, yes its a part of him but he is more than that. I do agree with other posters that said some people can make an illness/disability their whole personality.

As much as posters have got attacked on the thread the poll is 76% that it is weird/unnecessary/cringe to post these things so they are in the majority thinking that.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 11/10/2025 22:53

Who cares if it doesn’t “ sit well with you” ?

Diabetes isn’t something to be embarrassed about.
Maybe her kid wants to spread awareness and celebration.

Just unfriend her and get on with life.

Sharing a child's personal medical info is not ok and shouldn't be allowed. Would you share a post that your child just got their first period? Or they just had a bout of diarrhoea?
Its not fair on children whi cannot consent. If you must post about it then put on a closed FB page for diabetics. I know nothing else about the child only that he is diabetic. He could be a fantastic artist or footballer...celebrate your child but not their personal medical info.

Why are you asking then?

If you know you’re right, is this just so people rag on your friend?

Also those things aren’t the same. Parents share about their kids cancer, autism, lots of things.

There’s no one size fits all.
