It’s not a fucking stocking filler!

I’m getting sick of gift guides with ‘stocking fillers’ that are around £15-20.

‘Perfect stocking filler for a teen’ says Glamour of a £25 lip balm kit. GQ, recommends a Stockings contain at least 10 presents - more likely about 15-20. Therefore (unless you’re super rich) they need, by nature, to be much cheaper than this.

I earn good money, I wouldn’t spend upwards of £250 on a stocking BEFORE the main presents. AIBU

“It’s not a fucking stocking filler”. To You.

It is to me 🤷‍♀️ . I have late teens. I pop in things like lancombe mascara etc.

Me too! My teens stockings are usually awesome (I have three DD). Opening stockings is my favourite part of the day so we go a bit mad.

to me a stocking filler is anything you can fit in a stocking regardless of price!

Everybody knows stocking fillers are chocolate coins, a chocolate orange, a bath bomb and £ shop tatt .. they are also my favourite part of Christmas.. love buying the little daft bits and pieces for stockings 🎅

Agreed, this is the kind of thing I do for my girls. I do know people do it differently though as someone at work has large stockings and those can include gifts up to £200!

MrsResponder · 09/10/2025 18:40

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 13:47

for a 15 year old?

No, it's a £10 voucher and a handshake for a 15 year old. A chocolate orange thrown in if you're feeling sentimental.

Worriedalltheday · 09/10/2025 18:40

What do people buy as stocking fillers that £5? The only things I can think of are tat and I would rather put that towards a main gift. I do think books and socks are fillers though.

Ilfurfante · 09/10/2025 18:41

Stockings are our favourite part of Christmas, even with (young) adult and teen DC. They still come into our bedroom on Christmas morning and open one present at a time.

I love buying gifts at Christmas as I barely buy them anything through the year. Sometimes their stocking fillers will be more expensive but generally a mix of stuff. So 18 year old DD will get a few bits of Charlotte Tilbury make up, some Oliver Bonas gold hoops, fancy shower gel, cerave moisturiser, a book, some pants and socks and some chocolate.

rosydreams · 09/10/2025 18:41

i went on temu for the stockings lots of cheapy craptastic stuff for a teen like stuff to decorate their room ,badges/pins,stickers for their laptop, hair stuff, cool notepads, bags, jewellery .Then i can spend decent money on not crap stuff for their main gift

zingally · 09/10/2025 18:41

God no.

My almost-9yo twins are getting an assortment of things I found on TEMU that I thought they'd find amusing. About 8 small items each, with came to about £30 all together.

Kreepture · 09/10/2025 13:48

i always do stupid bits like the bag of chocolate coins, a novelty eraser, blind bag lego figure, silly pencil with fluff on the end, wind up x-mas themed toy, maybe a £5 voucher for Roblox..etc. It was always silly, fun, tat.

Yes, these are stocking fillers. Low cost, fun.

Yanbu...it starts earlier and earlier and gets bigger and bigger and people go along with it thinking it's their own choice.

This. As if choices are made in a vacuum.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/10/2025 18:47

Oh and my H always gets the Xmas copy of private eye and the oldie in his stocking - often provides for some amusing anecdotes on Xmas day too as he often reads them when anyone else is watching something seasonal!!

The worst thing suggested in those gift idea articles are the big fuck off matches. Enormous matches in a poncy box or jar with a £15 price. Who thinks “brilliant big fuck off matches just what I wanted!”

Matches?? You mean the things people use to light cigarettes, BBQs etc? This thread is an education!

That’s a really nasty thing to say. Take a look at yourself

I'm not the one starting a thread whining about how other people spend their money. You're the one who needs to take a look at yourself.

Hdpr · 09/10/2025 18:53

Our stockings are just the small stuff so everything you list is something I’d buy for a stocking. I’d rather buy stuff they will use than rubbish

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 17:51

but, to go back to the post I was actually replying to, it's not a "middle class" thing.

Older or not 😂, the ones most attracted by labels - even fake - are not middle class. What's dismissive about that.

It's not new that the very first sign of a chav is the labels they're wearing 😁

A person who uses the derogatory term chav is clearly classless.

Soonenough · 09/10/2025 18:57

Every family has different traditions though. Our stocking are not very big as they date from years ago and used to hang on their door knobs. Then one DC moved out with BF and took their stocking with them . Other than small items everything under the tree . And everything came from Santa . No presents from Mum and Dad . Other people's were also under tree.

EdithBond · 09/10/2025 18:59

YesJs · 09/10/2025 15:42

yep, very similar to my tweens. I also will add a book or two and some stationary

Absolutely none of it is tat and all of it will be used and enjoyed

I’m with you OP.

What kind of people spend £25 on one stocking filler?

I usually spend £50-£100 on main present for DC. Still give them a stocking as young adults as a tradition.

No tat. All stuff they use. But it’s usually confectionary, toiletries, small clothing items, stationary, bargains I’ve picked up here and there. Plus the obligatory nuts and clementines. Whole stocking comes to about £20 max as I’m a savvy shopper.

pumpkinscake · 09/10/2025 18:42

Yes, these are stocking fillers. Low cost, fun.

I got those as a child and started doing them for my dc then realised my mum must have surreptitiously binned it all in about January, as it takes over the house after a couple of Christmases!

Bra848tofjn · 09/10/2025 19:13

It’s easy to fill a stocking without plastic tat at a reasonable price.

Nobody needs a stocking filled with expensive gifts. They’re more fun when done with cheap thoughtful tat free items.

Confectionary, stationary items, toiletries (e.g. shower gel, beard oil), socks, plain white/black cotton t-shirt, discounted books, magazines, travel accessories, small scented candles, photo in frame etc. etc.

Get most of my fillers in Superdrug/Savers, TK Maxx, Primark, H&M, Poundland etc.

Oldandgrumpy25 · 09/10/2025 13:49

Tbf I don’t do sticking fillers as in stocking fillers 🤣

I just buy the presents and things I want to buy and then whatever is smaller enough to go in stocking goes in stocking.

it’s not based on cheaper things just smaller sized things. My kids still know what their main present is even if it’s in their stocking.

Edited

I do this too 😂

MrsResponder · 09/10/2025 19:28

I found this a couple of years ago. It feels similar to my parents' recollections of childhood Christmases and stockings (although a couple of generations earlier). Different, and much simpler, times.

Competitive buying sucks all the fun out of Christmas. I'd rather have the Edwardian version (minus the rickets!)

BlackeyedSusan · 09/10/2025 19:29

Thanks to mumsnet, mine get essentials to unwrap too, such as toothpaste, deodorant (bloody expensive deodorant spray) etc. They get a mix of things which has changed over the years. They are all wrapped. They still seem to like it.

I am as working class as they get, you can try to insult me, but it's not working 😂

Who's classless here, not me 😂

I once did a pack of Pritt sticks! There had been quite a few Pritt stick squabbles leading up to Christmas.
