It’s not a fucking stocking filler!

I’m getting sick of gift guides with ‘stocking fillers’ that are around £15-20.

‘Perfect stocking filler for a teen’ says Glamour of a £25 lip balm kit. GQ, recommends a Stockings contain at least 10 presents - more likely about 15-20. Therefore (unless you’re super rich) they need, by nature, to be much cheaper than this.

I earn good money, I wouldn’t spend upwards of £250 on a stocking BEFORE the main presents. AIBU

Ours too or a pre-made one when finances were better. 😅🤣 Good memories

We had a pillowcase which the presents were put in and then a section pack that was stocking shaped and usually covered in a net fabric.

Beachtastic · 12/10/2025 11:10

In 10 years' time we'll be filling "stockings" like this with goodies from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty's, and huddling together for warmth as no one will be able to afford to switch the heating on 😂

It’s not a fucking stocking filler!

@Throwaway65131 Per the OP's intention with this thread, I think it's interesting that the accepted definition of "stocking-filler" has changed in my lifetime from trivial disposable things just for early-morning amusement to significant purchases that just so happen to fit into a sock. Also, "when I were a lad" the sock was one of my dad's socks. Now, you can buy giant socks specially for this purpose.

It doesn't take a genius to work out what's been driving these changes.

Well, I’d agree with you in most points, but apparently it does take a genius to work out why this has happened as so many are arguing it’s….ALL THEIR DECISION AND THEY ARE NOT INFLUENCED BY SOCIETY AND ADVERTISING WHATSOEVER

I am currently wearing an (ancient) gold and emerald ring that belonged to my grand-mother, that she found in her Christmas stocking one year 😂

Shame on her parents for being so influenced by advertising hey

Why the hell are you talking about? Your posts are repeatedly nonsensical. I truly wonder what point you think you are making?

Tbf I don’t do sticking fillers as in stocking fillers 🤣

I just buy the presents and things I want to buy and then whatever is smaller enough to go in stocking goes in stocking.

it’s not based on cheaper things just smaller sized things. My kids still know what their main present is even if it’s in their stocking.

Edited

This is how I think of them . I agree with OP the price of some suggested things is silly
buy I use a stocking to keep all the small gifts together .

Kneeslikethese · 12/10/2025 17:49

Each ro their own.
My teens are 16 + 17 and love their stocking. It's a mix of cheap and more expensive stuff so chocolate coins, mini puzzles then a decent charger, ear buds, a gift card for costa/gregs and a nice scent. They're too old for me to waste money on cheap stuff they wo t use.
Gifts under the tree just tend to be larger boxes depending on what they're getting.

My apologies, to assume you have a certain level of understanding.

YOU laugh at people for following the recent media trend.
I am telling you that the most expensive gift being found in a Christmas stocking has always been a thing, and nothing to do with "the media" you are blaming.

I am very sorry I didn't explain it much clearer, I did think it was enough for you to understand, my bad.

YOU are the one INFLUENCED BY SOCIETY AND ADVERTISING
you are the one starting the thread and ranting, most of us just get on with our lives 😂

A main gift in a stocking wouldn’t be a ‘stocking filler’ would it? This thread is about media and brands and retailers pushing expensive gifts as ‘fillers.’ Why are you so vexed about this? It’s bizarre!

Anyway, you have posted so many times with so much aggressive rubbish this is the last time I will respond to you. Take your own advice and ‘get on with your life’ you don’t need to keep on coming back, ten, twenty, thirty times.

I hope it doesn’t put off others who had more sensible inputs.

Stocking fillers; an apple & orange ( middle child wants more exotic so kiwi, mango, avocado etc) both wrapped in foil, chocolate coins, lindt santa, tube of smarties, pair of socks/body spray/ lip balm etc, and a small toy like a wind up, that we can race across the dining table. My kids are now mid 20's to early 30's - dont live at home but come home for christmas - still want a stocking, in the same stocking they've had since childhood!

Hayley1256 · 12/10/2025 21:45

Everyone I know has always put/had small presents in stocking regardless of the value. My grandma always use to get jewellery from my grandad in her stocking. I've always putting small gifts in my DDs stocking (again regardless of value). Yes chocolate etc goes in there too but there's no price limit on what can fill a stocking. I buy some cheaper presents to fill out DDs pile but these can be any size

mondaytosunday · 12/10/2025 22:01

Who needs a magazine to tell you how many presents to put in a stocking? If it’s a standard sized stocking it will fit about five small presents and some chocolate coins.

Also, magazines like Glamour rely on advertising money, so no surprise they are pushing certain products.

DreamyTealGuide · 12/10/2025 22:13

some people seem to spend a lot of thoughts and energy on something they have decided everybody else should keep cheap and frivolous.😂

you have literally described a stocking filler - ‘cheaper present to fill out’

The cheaper gifts don't go in the stocking though unless there small. There more gift fillers - last year she had jewellery and skincare in her stocking. The point of a stocking is so small gifts don't get lost in the pile

bluebettyy · 13/10/2025 04:48

A magazine would often be paid by a company to advertise their stuff anyway. Stocking fillers are just another way to encourage waste and greed. My mum used to do stocking fillers when we were kids which I guess was nice but I haven’t bothered with 5 year old ds and I won’t be. We have enough stuff littered about the house.

Rosesarere · 13/10/2025 10:15

I fill the stocking with presents that are small enough. I don’t specifically buy for the stockings except maybe some chocolate coins and novalty plasters which I buy them every year

MarvellousMonsters · 13/10/2025 20:16

I think this happens because a lot of people label all presents ‘from Santa’. If Santa brings everything then it’s all “stocking fillers”?

I do agree with you though, stockings for us a small bits, and probably cost £25-30 in total, anything bigger than that is a wrapped gift and labelled who it’s actually from.

PeachShaker · 14/10/2025 11:26

That depends on the 15yo. I’m 44 and I still love my stocking it’s so much fun. It’s part of my Christmas tradition. My parents did mine til they died (and I was giving them stockings from age 9, as I was sorry Santa didn’t deliver to grown ups. Later, as Santa doesn’t actually give children stockings either.

Now me and husband exchange stockings. My son is 6 and I think he actually believes Santa gives me and his dad them.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 28/10/2025 17:49

Sod that stocking fillers are meant to be cheap.

Best to say Santa brings stocking filler and Mum and Dad the main presents, otherwise poor old Santa gets blamed for being unfair if the child gets a modest present and the one next door gets a huge present! At least Mum and Dad can explain that the finances can’t support lavish presents.

tuvamoodyson · 28/10/2025 18:19

BournardTourney · 09/10/2025 13:48

If the 15 year old still believes in Santa, yes. If they are 15 and don’t believe in Santa perhaps it’s time to have a couple of extra presents and no stocking.

The two teenagers in my family LOVE their stockings!!

We don't really do lavish presents anyway so that side of things doesn't really worry me too much.
