Sadiq Khan. Can anyone tell me something positive about what he has done?

So the past few days I've unfortunately gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of clips about the Mayor of London.

From what I have seen the man is an utter buffoon who has done nothing to improve London, in fact quite the opposite.

Strikes increasing. Homelessness increasing. Crime - off the charts. Congestion zone charges etc.

And don't get me started on the deputy who seems to be from another planet!

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

I can see with my own eyes and have noticed that (particularly the West End) is much sparser than it used to be. Footfall is definitely down in great numbers, if everything is so great then why is Khan talking about changing Oxford Street to bring people back?

Because Oxford Street IS a dump that's crying out for regeneration. But there are so many really lovely places that nobody from London ever goes there. Except maybe to Selfidges or the big Primark at Marble arch.

Well for a start, he wanted to ditch the Travelcard into London, which are the railway fares that include all travel within London for anyone coming into London from the surrounding counties, my fare would've doubled overnight. In the end it didn't happen, but Khan wanted it to end, with him just happily thinking people would happily pay double and keep visiting London.

All throughout the pandemic he told people not to visit (which yes there were restrictions), but the open hostility is still felt.

Seriously I walk around streets in London and it's dead. Covid did the damage and this mayor has done nothing to reinvigorate it.

The last government's removal of VAT-free shopping has been deadly, and that has seen a massive drop in tourists. The mayor hasn't bothered lobbying around it, despite most businesses telling him to do so.

Walking around central London in the evening is certainly not dead. Maybe a Sunday evening.

I've been to the West End just recently. Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Cambridge Circus, Seven Dials etc were all, quite frankly, fucking heaving.

It's true that the kind of big store retail that predominated Oxford Street is struggling somewhat but that's nothing special about London, it's endemic. Amazon etc and out-of-town retail parks have massively affected high street stores around the country. Pick a town centre anywhere in the UK and you'll see big empty site that used to house department stores. That you think London is unusual in this is almost comical.

JLou08 · 10/10/2025 21:22

I'm in the north. We also have seen huge increases in homelessness and crime, also lots of strikes. You're talking about national issues, not London issues.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 10/10/2025 21:25

TheCatsTongue · 10/10/2025 20:16

As I said London Travelcards. Which is the return journey to London and unlimited travel on the tube (zones 1-6) and buses. Right now a return to London and three stops on the tube is the same as a travelcard. Added onto the fact that with national rail services you can use a railcard to discount prices by 1/3, which you can't do on the tube.

It's not a surprise that they had to be saved otherwise it would've been another nail in the coffin for London leisure.

Please explain to me how "I can get a return to London plus three stops at the same price now that I used to, or I can get 1/3 discount on national rail but the tube still costs the same (albeit now capped because thanks TFL)" equals your original claim of "travel costs have doubled"?

Where were you coming in from and how many tube zones were you travelling across to make that make any kind of sense? I've tried a few examples that I've travelled and, frankly, I think you're talking utter bollocks but I'd welcome you proving me wrong.

I understand why it's tempting to trust your personal experience about how busy somewhere appears to be, but the increased number of tourists - counted by an organisation in whose interests it is to be accurate about it - says otherwise. It's the modern way to refute 'experts' but once you have the numbers it's surely normal to accept it is more likely that you are in town on quieter days or in an area that is less fashionable than it used to be (like Oxford Street) than that they are wrong, because you haven't counted people (and nor have I), but they have.

Londoner and can say he is a shame and he is the worst Mayor since they started having one. The second one was Livingstone. Taxpayers waste of money on Khan. He also has an entourage to protect him wherever he goes. A joke gone too far.

Please give specific examples as to why Khan is the worst Mayor of London, so we can see why you think that way.

Incidentally, what are your views on Johnson (a) refusing to fly back from holiday in 2011 when riots broke out (b) giving hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money to an American woman he was shagging and (c) wasting £50 million (unrecoverable) of taxpayers money on the so-called Garden bridge?

Khan has a security detail because the racist halfwits who don't like his skin colour or religion keep making death threats.

Yesshadow · 10/10/2025 22:19

It's embarrassing really. I speak to foreign tourists in London and they try not to say how disappointed they are with London because they don't want to insult you.

giggling at this. Do we reckon @Toomanywaterbottles is going around doing official interviews? Or that tourists just come up to them to speak hide their disappointment?

FWIW I work in a very central area of London and the sheer amount of tourists drive me nuts - as they always did - and as it should be.

And of course you have no agenda here at all.

You're a very prolific right wing poster. I don't even have to AS you - I know you well.

Ooh, another one!

Tell me, what it is that he's said/done that makes you think he's got a height complex? And what is it that you know about the every day lives of True Londoners given that you live in both the UK and the US?

And yes, I'm entirely expecting that just like all the other vague accusations from pro-Trump/Reform posters on this thread, this request for clarification will also go unanswered.

This thread is epitomising this 30 Rock scene. Just substitute ‘Muslim’ for ‘Jewish’.

30 million tourists per year is not 'dead'

She's never asked me. I no longer live in the UK but when I did I used to visit for work regularly. I now return 2 or 3 times a year to visit friends, mainly in east and south London.

My very unscientific opinion is that over the last 10 or so years, London has started to feel much better from a visitor's point of view. It's cleaner (I have asthma so can really appreciate the cleaner air), it's easier to get around and just feels more at ease with itself. I feel safer than I used to too. I walked back to my hotel from a wedding in the early hours earlier this year, I'm not sure I would have done that 10+ years ago.

gegs73 · 10/10/2025 23:12

ULEZ. As an asthma sufferer my quality of life and breathing is so much improved since this was brought in. He capped prices for bus journeys made within an hour on different buses. Superloop. Brought in night tubes for some lines. London not perfect but I don’t think it ever has been, in my opinion he’s doing a decent job.

Are you seriously suggesting that Khan is bad for London because he is short? How embarrassing for you.
He's actually great for all the ACTUAL things that people have repeatedly pointed out. Frankly I vouldnt care less what he looks like. Why would it be relevant?

Gymrabbit · 10/10/2025 23:42

A few people have suggested that Khan is not misogynistic in the assembly, he just speaks to Susan Hall rudely because she’s thick etc. please find a video in which he speaks to various female MPs rudely including Lib Dems and a Green Party Leader. And he repeatedly refuses to answer simple questions. Very few people give a crap about his race(I’m sure some do) - it’s his smug arrogance in questions that annoys people.

Andrew Boff who is a Tory and is chairing here is a massive misogynist and TRA btw so unsurprisingly supports the mayor.

Agree with all of this and I lived in London, bought a property there, zone 2, worked and gave birth to two children - both went to a nursery just off Soho Square - GASP

Oh, a video from that YouTube...which does nothing to back up whatever point it is you think you're making, but does indicate quite alot about your willingness to believe any old guff you trip over on t'internet.

Still, you're the genius who thinks that London should have two Mayors, one in charge of the outer ring of "Outer" London, so...

FullOfLemons · 11/10/2025 03:00

Nope. His main achievement seems to be taking the credit for the work of others.

The ULEZ was planned well before SK came to power and the LTNs were designed and implemented by local councils (TFL not helping in this process).

I have not RTFT but I’d be surprised if anybody thinks the Met Police has improved.

Sadly the alternatives in 2024 were even worse.
