Sadiq Khan. Can anyone tell me something positive about what he has done?

So the past few days I've unfortunately gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of clips about the Mayor of London.

From what I have seen the man is an utter buffoon who has done nothing to improve London, in fact quite the opposite.

Strikes increasing. Homelessness increasing. Crime - off the charts. Congestion zone charges etc.

And don't get me started on the deputy who seems to be from another planet!

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

Yes...Instigated by a man who insists on a cavalcade of range rovers to chauffeur him everywhere (this isnt hyperbole - it's literal)

The hypocrisy is just painful.

A lot of this is because he and his family get constant death threats so needs enhanced security.

euff · 09/10/2025 06:45

Thank you for this thread. It’s been a great reminder of all the positive changes he has made. Also that I’m not completely surrounded by the thick and ignorant who would prefer to line the pockets of Johnson and his friends letting him get away with lies worth hundreds of millions. The kind of people that come online to say it’s the usual suspects when a foreign looking person is in the news but are strangely quiet when it’s (to them) a native looking person. The kind that celebrate ulez cameras being blown up and ask about go fund me for the perpetrator even though there is shrapnel in a child’s bedroom, damaged cars and property around it. I will absolutely be voting for Khan again.

How about in Greater London?

But of course why should he give a shit about us. We don’t vote for him.

The congestion charge is a tax on the poor. If you’re rich enough it’s fine to pollute apparently but if not fuck you.
and if you live in Greater London there’s no tubes and public transport is not great.

Who do you think is breathing the clean air. Just rich people?

earphoneson · 09/10/2025 07:03

So people who are pro him are listing his achievements and posting links, and the few that are opposed are arguing points based on these facts -‘he’s odious’, ‘thick as mince’.

Don't we all love a good discussion.

It’s amazing isn’t it, the working classes cowered whilst the rich elite ripped off the whole nation with corruption yet these working class “normal” politicians can’t sneeze without being called useless, lazy, thick etc.

Nothing. He is an absolute disaster. Totally ineffective and thick as mince. But the far left love him so they’ll defend him on this thread.

could you gv done examples of his ineffectiveness and thickness, please?

Implementing congestion zones was a very bold move. So many people were furious about them at first but they're here now and we all have cleaner air to breathe. For that alone ,I admire him.

This, absolutely this.

The air quality in London has improved significantly directly due to the actions taken by Sadiq Khan. Some people have forgotten just how appalling the smog was.

Bambamhoohoo · 08/10/2025 20:03

OP why are you arguing with posters rather than digesting all the good work they have taken the effort to source links to for you? So entitled and rude

This exactly. Don’t ask the question if you’re not prepared to listen to the answer

TofuEater · 09/10/2025 07:16

imfabul0us · 09/10/2025 01:45

@SalmonOnFinnCrisp
Sadly, he has to have protection because of the many racist death threats against him.

Yes. As Prince Harry discovered, you can't just demand police protection. He has to have permanent security (he travelled by puic transport during his first term) and I imagine it's extremely inconvenient for him and his family

LakieLady · 09/10/2025 07:18

Thortour · 08/10/2025 19:53

They sold the buildings to fund the shortfall of central funding.
He increased police numbers which were cut by Johnson.
OP can you not Google this stuff? Maybe get a decent source of information.

A lot of police forces, including mine on the South Coast, have been closing police stations or massively reducing opening hours for years.

It frees up officers to actually go out and do police work, and also meant they raised capital from selling the sites. My local police station was sold and converted into flats.

It makes perfect sense to me.

RyanFudgingMurphy · 09/10/2025 07:24

He indirectly made TfL a Menopause friendly workplace.

He holds Question Times with the public.

I feel safer riding my bike around London.

He aaw that the Garden Bridge was costing far too much money and cancelled it.

I don't like him as a man. He's arrogant and has a superiority complex. But I can't deny what he's done for London.

UncertainPerson · 09/10/2025 07:25

He’s actually a leader. So he sees a big problem and pushes through policies that work even if they are unpopular. Unlike most politicians he does what’s right for the long term and not what the focus group says will make him popular in the media. The Labour government could learn a lot. I would have liked to see Sadiq manage welfare reform, for example.

RyanFudgingMurphy · 09/10/2025 07:26

Also @Luckymum20 BJ closed a bunch of fire stations when he was in office. He wasted so much money on vanity projects like the cable car and Garden Bridge. The cable car is only still running because profits from the Tube and Overground are part funding it. (I work for TfL)

Eyesopenwideawake · 09/10/2025 07:30

Have only read the OP posts (wish I hadn't) but I suspect their main problem with him is that he's brown.

They are just too frit to say so.

@Linenpickle HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN ON THE SUPERLOOP? It’s magical.

Being a country bumpkin, I had no idea about this. I've just looked it up, and it looks fantastic.

When I lived in Croydon (30-odd years ago) getting to Heathrow by public transport was a nightmare, now it would be a 10-minute walk and a bus ride.

Genius.

I breathe it when I am work.
I get on the train outside London and the place stinks of diesel fumes near the station.
There are fewer queues leading to the black wall tunnel.
The pavements are clear of cars unlike where I live

localnotail · 09/10/2025 07:36

OMG, Labour and not white. He must be awful!! (eye roll)

Cleaner air, better standards of new built housing. Less cars.

Just no name a few.

This is actually great language and so true. Loads of evidence on this thread that proves what great things he's done for those of us who live here (I've voted for him every time), but you're so right - he's an actual LEADER.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/10/2025 07:39

He’s been a fantastic mayor and I think we’ll really miss him when he’s gone.

As others have said, free school meals, clean air initiatives, improvements to bus services (all much needed). He’s also a brilliantly inclusive and unifying mayor for actual Londoners and celebrates all elements of our wonderfully diverse city.

If you’re thinking he’s a disaster, you either know nothing about London and/ or have believed right wing propaganda - a lot of it coming out of russia.

Yes it goes from practically the top of my road!

Not that I ever go to Heathrow but still

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/10/2025 07:41

Just looking out my window at the clear, quiet autumn morning with birds flying around and the cat from next door stretching on the lawn "yeah London - totally ruined mate. Absolute hell hole."

Also LOL at the poster who said all of Greater London hates him - Greater London is all of London except the cities of London and Westminster. We can't hate him that much as we elected him three times.

Runssometimes · 09/10/2025 07:48

Cleaner air, better transport.

I wonder what it is about him people outside London don’t like... more death threats than any other mayor. The obsession certainly reveals more about them than Sadiq. The abuse he gets is unreal and not deserved. Pure racism.

He hasn’t embarrassed us on any ziplines. I’ve voted for him every time. Only politician I have been generally happy with.

I don’t - as a Londoner - comment on who other cities elect as mayor. If he ran again I’d vote for him again. I think given more time he’d improve transport links in Greater London which is sorely needed.

Only thing I don’t agree with is not including bike lanes in the Silvertown Tunnel but seems the plans and expenditure were too far advanced under his predecessor so I’ll let him off.

I meant outer London. The boroughs outside Inner London who have never voted for him. And if the concept is too complex for you look up the teacher pay scales.

As I said upthread they should split London up and have two Mayors or make his jurisdiction only for the centre. most of the outer boroughs never wanted a Mayor anyway.
