What do you do for your Xmas breakfast?

I am hosting for the first time. I am 29, in my newly gutted and decorated home so plan to push the boat out. No children will be in attendance. Only adults. I enjoy hosting and cooking/baking.

What do you do for Christmas brekkie? I want it to be posh but light and easy. I was thinking of doing cinnamon buns and fruit salad. Plus tea, coffee, juice and fizz.

But then I think most people who are coming don’t really have sweet tooth’s (myself included liked). Stuffed croissants? DIY style? There will be a couple of veggies. And then some mini sweet pastries? But then that seems like too much pastry. Parfait?

I wouldn’t mind doing waffles/crepes but I don’t think that will be fun as I don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen whilst everyone else eats.

Xmas lunch is at 2.

Sorry this is being asked in Oct!

there will be plenty of snacks/canapes/seeet treats throughout the day

Rage and disappointment as my elderly dad has his 2 Weetabix as per any other day and views any ‘festive’ food as gluttony and greed.

It’s just me and him ans I dread it every year.

Jeez I’m a fatty big eater but how on earth do you all eat that rich breakfast AND a full Christmas dinner a few hours later? I just can’t reconcile the MN size 6 mentality and what is on this thread at all!!

This. ^ Smoked salmon, bagels, bucks fizz, sourdough, croissants with cheese and honey, and pork pies - for breakfast! 😖Do people really eat this stuff for breakfast?!

Christmas day or not, I still have a bowl of cereal, or a yogurt and a banana. And no, I'm not a bloody teeny tiny. I just don't have a big breakfast.

And yes, I would never be able to eat my Christmas turkey meal a few hours later if I ate all of that for breakfast!

Some of the 'Christmas breakfasts' on this thread are wild! Shock Who drinks bucks fizz for breakfast?! Batshit!

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/10/2025 18:34

You know there is a Christmas topic don't you?

FunnyOrca · 08/10/2025 18:34

Bucks Fizz is the only mandatory part. My parents still host and everyone scrounges for themselves but get kicked out the kitchen by 9am, sometimes 8:30.

Selection includes:
bacon rolls (meat eaters)
porridge (usually with some Christmassy spice)
Avocado toast
Cinnamon swirl peanut butter toast
Pastries
yoghurt with toppings

If you miss the kitchen closing you’re stuck with clementines and chocolates

MagicLoop · 08/10/2025 18:34

A sweet breakfast wouldn't appeal to me on Christmas morning for some reason. I'd normally have scrambled eggs with either ham or smoked salmon. But for vegetarians maybe scrambled eggs with fried mushrooms.

Are all your guests staying overnight & expecting you to cook breakfast - as well as the full Xmas meal?

Sorry I replied to the wrong poster I think! Ooops.

inamo · 08/10/2025 18:38

FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 18:21

@inamo well, you could blow me down with a feather, I’ve never heard of such a thing. But I’ll be making it!

I make it because it is easy and there's no time pressure since it stays warm for a good while, it's one big tray/dish so people can have seconds if they want (gotta get in quick lol!). I ahem, microwave the beans, more as needed. 😊It turns out different every time depending what I throw in there.

Rowgtfc72 · 08/10/2025 18:38

Bacon butties and a cuppa.

Blarn · 08/10/2025 18:39

Croissants. Always just buttered when I was young but dh and one dc like them with cheese and ham so they have that and dd2 and I have just butter. It's nice and easy but feels like a treat, even though we do have them throughout the year!

Who drinks Bucks Fizz at breakfast? Me! IT'S CHRISTMAS! Plus there's hardly any alcohol in it. Well, the one I get isn't strong anyway. I don't drink much the rest of the year but a bit of fizz and a festive breakfast makes it feel special.

I love reading these sort of threads. Christmas morning is just the best! But goodness, there are some miseries on here.

HeyThereDelila · 08/10/2025 18:41

We had porridge growing up; DH’s family did smoked salmon and toast with scrambled eggs plus Bucks Fizz.

We always had smoked salmon and prawn cocktail for our Christmas lunch starter and we still do because I treat Christmas food like it’s 1978 so I don’t want salmon twice on one day! So I still have porridge or toast with marmalade etc and DH usually has eggs on toast. DS likes toasted fruit loaf with a yoghurt etc; we’ll all eat together. DH and I might sip some champagne or Bucks Fizz with the tea and coffee too. But we keep it fairly simple and light at breakfast as we like to eat lunch at 1/2pm not long after church, leaving time to make space for tea of turkey and ham sandwiches and Christmas cake, chocolate Yule log etc.

But if you’re hosting a large group maybe see what they prefer?

Worriedalltheday · 08/10/2025 18:41

I always prefer something filling and proper like savoury. I would do a lovely platter of scrambled eggs with chopped veg to fill the croissants. You could do tofu for those who don’t do eggs.
and then have your pastries and fruit. That would be a proper breakfast for me. I would also do sausages.

momager1 · 08/10/2025 18:42

@Cordee for over 35 years...homemade cinnamon buns with cream cheese icing (let me know if you want a from scratch recipe) big bowl of fresh fruit salad, mimosas.. not allowed for our kids till they were old enough..they are now in their thirties..and when we are not there (live abroad now) they continue the tradition.

Pushmepullu · 08/10/2025 18:42

Mince pies. I usually make dozens on Christmas Eve and need them gone or I’ll eat them all myself. Son has sausage rolls.

FurForksSake · 08/10/2025 18:42

@Latenightreader is the dill sauce in a jar? Ocado do three types, is the ikea one nicer? I love it with smoked salmon on a cohen’s bagel.

Breakfast casseroles. My favorite the last few years is bread, sausage, cheese, apple, and a bit of onion. Soak in the egg and milk mixture overnight. Just pop in the oven in the morning.

you can make sweet or savory. They have to be prepped in advance and do not need any presence in the kitchen on the actual day.

I’ve never heard of this - I like the sounds of it!

We usually have simple and easy (toast / cereal) because the Xmas dinner is the main meal and cooking of the day for us. But we do have Bucks Fizz.

This thread is giving me ideas though!

Aperolspritzoclock · 08/10/2025 18:43

I make in advance and freeze 3 or 4 types of muffin (e.g. orange and cranberry, coffee and white chocolate, mincemeat, spiced) also mince pies, and dd sometimes makes cinnamon buns. And champagne cocktails.

GoldBalonz · 08/10/2025 18:47

Absolutely zero cooking. Fuck that.

A few smallish pastries (sweet and savoury), posh yoghurts and some fruit. And if they didn't like that they could lump it and make do with a handful of quality street.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 08/10/2025 18:51

Everything depends on what I ate the night before to be honest. Sometimes eggs Florentine, sometimes toast and an Alka-seltzer!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 08/10/2025 18:55

Something very light. Yogurt and fruit or a smoothie. Definitely not a fry up! I want to enjoy my Christmas dinner and wouldn’t if I had a big breakfast.

Lidless do a cracking smokes salmon already in a dill sauce too 😋

GAJLY · 08/10/2025 18:59

Croissants and the gingerbread house we made christmas eve.

Offloadontome · 08/10/2025 18:59

Bacon butties? Sausage sandwiches? A fry up? A selection of toast and toppings?
My mum used to get posh stuff like salmon Bagels.
We just have cereal like usual on Xmas morning and then probably have fancy mid morning snacks to keep us going!
