Regarding Greta using a photo of emaciated Israeli hostage Evyatar David on a poster/content slide regarding the suffering of Palestinian prisoners.

She & the affiliated have since edited/rectified but seems to be without any acknowledgement or comment from anyone from her or her team… yet.
AIBU to think that’s quite a major gaffe that warrants acknowledgment from her end?

You know it's possible to think two things at once? You can campaign against global warming while being concerned about Gaza and vice versa. The Genocide in Gaza is a very immediate problem.
Some really pathetic people on here crying about other people trying to make the world better.

No, they won’t acknowledge this, because it means that they’d have to expand their thinking outside of “anti-genocide = bad”

jiyg · 08/10/2025 19:51

she’s been told what the cause du jour is and she’s jumped on board. Literally.

She’s hasn’t had an education and it shows.
One of the lovely women on the flotilla, a well known holocaust denier, spoke on the news yesterday saying that Israeli people aren’t human. These people aren’t trying to hide or disguise their rampant Jew hate anymore. It’s sickening. The tide is turning sharply against these idiots though.

User37482 · 08/10/2025 19:05

It’s actually really awful to delete a picture of a human being suffering because it was the wrong type of human being. I think people just don’t want to see anything that might fuck uo their narrative. Jean Hatchet is fighting the good fight on twitter talking about Gazan women who are being forced to exchange sex for aid from Palestinian men and she’s getting yelled at by pro Palestinians. I mean for ffs rape is just wrong, she is advocating for women in a war zone.

Excellent post.

FiatLuxAdAstra · 08/10/2025 19:55

The fact that a hostage of Hamas looks just as starved and abused as a detainee of the IDF such that photos of them are almost indistinguishable is what we should be discussing.

Ddakji · 08/10/2025 20:00

Summerhillsquare · 08/10/2025 17:44

I expect she's concentrating on her mission, first of all campaigning for action on climate change, and now also to try and stop a genocide. Thank goodness we have such people in the world, not because they are perfect but because they TRY to make the world a better place. Better to try, make mistakes, fail, try again, than not to care or do nothing.

For someone with her platform, and who claims to be expert in the issues she campaigns about, it was a colossal error. However, we all make
mistakes - it’s how we respond to those mistakes that matters. And as a PP said, is she now going to ignore the hell of this emaciated man because he’s the wrong nationality?

noblegiraffe · 08/10/2025 20:00

It is absolutely astonishing that someone so absorbed in the conflict completely failed to recognise a famous front-page photo of an Israeli who is still being held hostage by Hamas.

It makes one wonder where she is getting her news from and how limited and biased it is.

She has also not considered the impact on the family of using a photo of their tortured loved-one as propaganda for the terrorists holding him hostage.

I read that once again there was barely any aid on the flotilla so it was literal showboating.

To rock up and potentially cause an international incident during serious ceasefire negotiations is also not helping.

canchewcashew · 08/10/2025 20:01

She's an idiot, I'm afraid. The sooner people start ignoring her, the better.

She's not discussing it, is she? Does she ever mention the Israeli hostages? Or are they an inconvenient truth?

In looking at the now deleted post, I do wonder if there was a language barrier.
It said ‘Humanity cannot be selective. Justice cannot have borders’
Three photos underneath - 2 of Palestinian detainees and 1 of an Israeli hostage,

There was also an image of the Israeli flag over Evyatar’s photo in her post which leads me to think it may not have been an error.

Swedish is her first language. I’d like to think she was making a point about the suffering of all prisoners- hostages and detainees but the backlash from both her compatriots and those against led her to just delete it instead of try to explain.

She has just been released from Israeli detention during which she has alleged mistreatment amounting to torture. So I’d cut the kid a bit of slack.

I think you might be clutching at straws.
To me, it looks like the Israeli flag looks is there coincidentally as part of the background image representing the prison or border. Why is there not a Palestinian flag above the others then?
Also worth noting this was not just created/posted by Greta. It was a joint post with some other influencers/campaigners/organisations that she is associated with. So whether Greta literally put this together herself, seems unlikely. Could have been a member of her circle. But she posted it, as someone with enormous global influence and reach. That is her own responsibility.

So it is your opinion that the Israeli flag above the Israeli hostage is pure coincidence then? It isn’t there to denote his nationality to distinguish him from the Palestinians?

Interesting to read that the post wasn’t authored by Greta, why is she getting all the blame for it then?

Viviennemary · 08/10/2025 20:40

She is a silly conceited young person who has a terrific sense of her self importance. No idea why she gets the publicity she does.

Look at the quote about Palestinian prisoners. If it was intended to include Israeli hostages the message would have mentioned Israeli hostages.

It was intended as a picture of a Palestinian prisoner.

To wonder if Greta will acknowledge her blunder?

And one of the images she used to show how awfully the Israelis are treating Palestinians was of... an Israeli hostage.

Possibly because she isn’t sitting at home using infantilising adjectives on Mumsnet but going out and using her voice?

That's clearly part of the background picture. It's a sign above the wall, not a flag.

ETA: I mean, obvs it's a flag, but it's part of the background picture, nothing to do with the overlaid pictures.

I believe it’s a coincidence yes. None of the reports on this have mentioned your theory.

And as I said before, we don’t know for sure that Greta herself literally put the poster together. We also don’t know that she didn’t.

Regardless, she posted it as part of her own activism & campaigning so she should bear responsibility.
Yes whoever made this blunder is human and humans make mistakes. But personally, I’d expect someone in her position to own up to it or acknowledge it rather than sweep it under the carpet.

It was intended as a picture of a Palestinian prisoner.

Then why the bit directly above the photos highlighted in yellow:
“Humanity cannot be selective. Justice cannot have borders”

What would the first refer to if not to the collective humanity of Palestinians and Israelis. What would the second refer to if not the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip?

To my view the intro asserting that Palestinian prisoners are systematically abused is only because that is a contested issue. No one contests that Hamas has been systematically abusing their Israeli hostages, so no need to state that.

I honestly see a post that tried to not be one sided. The backlash was from all sides- especially the extremists on both sides that cannot see the humanity in either Israelis or Palestinians.

Yes exactly, or that if your interpretation is correct.

Instead they just adjusted/edited it without a word. Even after Evyatar’s sister pointed him out. If your theory is correct, I would have thought they’d explain the misinterpretation…
