Do you think you could get away with it?

DH and I were talking about this last night (sort of). Vampires must be really struggling for victims nowadays with CCTV and forensic evidence. Victorian vampires were really living in the golden age! Nowadays they'd have to work in a blood bank and skim some off the side or something in order to survive. But would that be enough? Most predators won't scavenge in the animal world. Could a vampire live off blood bags?

They can in The Vampire Diaries. Or animal blood as in Twilight??

DoubleShotEspressox · 08/10/2025 11:35

There is probably only a very short list of circumstance where I would actively go and kill someone that wasn’t immediate self defense.

If anyone abused, hurt or murdered my kids or my mum.

I would pay cash under a fake name for a shit car and run them over, reserve over them a few times. Burn out the car. Job done.

In all likelihood I would get traced or arrested while attempting to flee - I would make sure that I was totally drunk, have a credible history detailed with my GP of my never ending mental health crisis since, and I’m a woman with no previous convictions - baby jail time at worst.

In those circumstances I think going to jail would be worth it.

In 'The Radleys' only eating animal blood is survivable, but not good. Malnourishment like only living off gruel. And too long without human blood gives them the 'blood lust' where they can snap and rampage which would not be good ...

In interview with a vampire, he does both. In the early 20th Century he alternates between human and rat to avoid suspicions, which implies they really need human blood. But later on, survives off blood bags, but whether he still needs a fresh kill every so often, I don't know.

DH and I thought our best bet would be to move around remote hiking destinations. Remote, no witnesses, no CCTV, scavengers would eat the remains, and it would just be written off as an unfortunate camping disappearance. The key would be to keep moving though to not raise suspicions.

Do vampires show up on CCTV? Or is it like not having a reflection?

In Angel the vampires can drink animal blood, usually bought from a vampire.

In Buffy (later series) there was a bar where humans would go to let vampires drink from them.

I'm a crime writer, so I spend quite a lot of time pondering this professionally. I've used the cliff top method before (in a book, not real life). This thread has given me some great ideas!

In reality, I could never do it, keeping a secret of that magnitude would eat me up inside.

Conan Doyle a dramatic forerunner?

In interview with a vampire they show up in photos, so I'd assume so.

There are too many inconsistencies to be definitive with the animal blood/blood bags solution. The human bar sounds good though.

I think they’re are loads of murders that go unnoticed. Put down as accidents or natural causes. The point is we don’t know.

And loads more that are noticed, but go unsolved. People don't always slip up, by any means.

Never wanted to murder anyone, but I've always found it an interesting question what the perfect murder would be. I suppose: happens outdoors, in a place with no particular connection to either victim or killer. Nobody else even knows there's any connection between victim and killer - whatever is motivating killer, nobody else knows about it. Nobody is going to miss the victim or report it for at least a day or two. Body can be concealed fairly near place of death, in a way that makes it unlikely to be found. And these days, ideally neither party has a phone on them. Neither arrives at location of murder by car, or via a route that can be tracked with CCTV all the way. Victim is somehow induced to go there alone and of their own volition - no abduction. Killer has a watertight plan for disposal of weapon and their own clothes before going home (clean clothes hidden somewhere maybe?). Perhaps a shower somewhere other than home - leisure centre or something.

It's weird I can't ever seem to get into crime fiction, because I do kind of like working out these kinds of plots....

ClareBlue · 09/10/2025 13:39

The ones who know how to get away with it aren't going to come on here and tell you, are they. That's part of why they do get away with it. 😉 The most successful killers are not the ones we know about, it's the ones we don't know about.

You seem to have given this alot of thought....

Ram a cyclist in your car and claim SMIDSY in court and that they weren't wearing a helmet or hi-vis. You'll escape with a fine and some points on your license.

everyoldsock · 09/10/2025 13:50

Not bad at all @Elsvieta but the person’s screams or shouting may be heard by someone. And it relies on that person not having a device with them.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 09/10/2025 14:14

No need to get clever with elaborate plots. You just need plausible deniability. Join the police, shoot someone carrying a table leg in a bag and claim you felt threatened. Or you could get elected, vote in austerity measures, dismantle public health services or set up ICE.

CaroleLandis · 09/10/2025 14:17

Yes.

Elderly relatives and neighbours could easily take a planned tumble down the stairs.

Not that I would.

Wonder if any rookie cops (or bored DIs) are eyeballing this thread... 🤷‍♀️ 😅

Itiswhysofew · 09/10/2025 15:51

Not a chance. I'd also probably confess to it because I couldn't live with what I'd done.

Being a published crime novelist would be a great way of covering a digital footprint for researching techniques

HorrorPudding · 09/10/2025 16:06

Since the advent of DNA I’ve been forced to delete my hit list. I feel the window of opportunity has now gone. Shame really.

Oh god, don't do that! I have to deal with some really painful professionals, and thinking how I'd run them over on a country lane lightens the mood in some of our meetings.

When I sit back and visably relax and smile that's my happy place. Easy by the Commodores is playing as I do it 🤣

tobee · 09/10/2025 16:35

It's amazing the amount of men people that kill someone and think they'll get away with it because they're far cleverer than the police

It's also amazing how many men people then go on to say they're going to be interviewed without a solicitor, defend themselves at trial because they believe themselves to be intellectually superior to anyone else.

As a fledgeling crime writer, but doing my PhD in crime fiction I regularly search dodgy stuff and often put ‘for writers’ in google just in case I trigger Interpol!!

everyoldsock · 09/10/2025 16:53

One thing I find staggering after reading how some criminals have been caught is the amount of people who think deleting their browsing history on their devices or restoring their phones to factory settings means the police won’t be able find out about their incriminating online searches and messages.
