AIBU to think this "wedding pianist" is unbelievably rude?

We are getting married in April and have found a lovely venue which allows us to source music ourselves. I looked around options locally and they all charge a fortune for 5-6 hour packages which we don't really need - just someone to play a few tunes as guests arrive and during and after the ceremony, nice and quiet, nothing complicated.

A friend told me about a friend of hers who plays for weddings sometimes, not as a full time career because she does other music work too. So I got in touch with her, mentioned my friend's name, said what I wanted and asked for a quote. She came back to me with £220!! For a couple of hours piano playing! Surely this is money for old rope.

I wrote back and said I thought it was a little on the steep side and this is where the rudeness comes in. She actually messaged me back and said I should start taking lessons now myself and in ten years I'll be as good as her and can play for my next wedding! AIBU to think that this is extremely unprofessional and also a very unpleasant way to communicate with prospective customers?

BurnTheWholeThingDown · 05/10/2025 19:52

Haha good for her! And how rude of you!

PenCreed · 05/10/2025 19:52

If you want a professional player, you have to pay them.

Poppyseed14 · 05/10/2025 19:53

You were rude to her OP. It's even worse as she's a friend of a friend. How embarrassing for your friend who recommended her. How much were you expecting to pay out interest?

Rocknrollstar · 05/10/2025 19:53

If she is playing for you then she isn’t working elsewhere. She has to practice and she has to plan suitable music. YABU

DaisyChain505 · 05/10/2025 19:54

You’re the rude one here not her.

hellotomrw · 05/10/2025 19:55

£220 is cheap. I think you deserved the response you got

TappyGilmore · 05/10/2025 19:55

Well you were rude first. You were told a price, the options at that point are that you accept it or you say no thanks/don’t respond if you don’t want to accept it. There’s no need to say that you think it is a little on the steep side.

Yes her message is rude but not sure what you were expecting after that!

standtallskyfall · 05/10/2025 19:56

Sorry, Mortified for you. She put you in your place though, fair play to her.

MumChp · 05/10/2025 19:56

It's a very decent offer. You are the rude one here.

steamingin · 05/10/2025 19:56

You sound delightful. Pianist is correct.

Cleanthatup · 05/10/2025 19:56

Your are the cheeky one. £220 is nothing for a ln artist to play at your wedding. You've made your self and your friend look a right fool. Play the radio if you’re not that bothered.

CoffeeCantata · 05/10/2025 19:56

A professional musician for 2 hours? That’s very reasonable. I think you need to get out more OP!

I’m sorry - I’m stunned at your ignorant attitude.

Evaka · 05/10/2025 19:56

Honestly you are so out of order. Describing someone's very reasonable quote as money for old rope. I'm cringing reading this.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 05/10/2025 19:56

YABU. How much were you expecting to pay?

HeddaGarbled · 05/10/2025 19:56

Nah, that’s a brilliantly funny response. Woman who knows her value 😃

randomchap · 05/10/2025 19:56

You're not just paying for the couple of hours. You're paying for the skills she's honed over years.

Vodkamartini3olives · 05/10/2025 19:56

Boom ! She nailed it. I love her response

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/10/2025 19:56

You were extremely rude.

Sunfloweranddaisy · 05/10/2025 19:56

That’s cheap!
You were rude.
Her reply was brilliant.

TheChosenTwo · 05/10/2025 19:56

This is definitely a reverse!!

Another76543 · 05/10/2025 19:56

Whilst her reply was perhaps a little blunt, perhaps she’s fed up with people not valuing her talent. It takes years of hard work and dedication to reach a high standard on the piano. £220 seems reasonable to me, taking into account travel time and warming up etc, and of course the years of hard work,

To describe her as someone “just someone to play a few tunes” is rather condescending. If you just want a “few tunes”, perhaps approach a school student looking for experience, or just play something on a sound system.

Raisetheroof2026 · 05/10/2025 19:56

OP you are totally in the wrong here. That’s very very reasonable for a professional pianist and you flatly told her she charges too much. YABU.

ExpressCheckout · 05/10/2025 19:57

This has to be a joke, surely - not only complaining about the price (which is reasonable) but also use of the word 'source'.

Snorlaxo · 05/10/2025 19:58

Is this a reverse?

It sounds like your budget is more like stream a Spotify playlist which is fine.
