This is worse than the attack in Manchester.

1457bloom · 05/10/2025 16:24

I hope Starmer visits and defends Muslims against hate crime.

Funny how when Mosques are burned down, regardless of the cause, it's a hate crime. But when a Church is destroyed in the same way, regardless of the cause, nobody cares.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgrqkyx2wpdo

It's almost like nobody gives a toss about Christianity because they're so scared of offending Islam.

Multifaith country my arse.

The country has an established Church of England, and yet nobody bats an eyelid when a community Church gets burned down.

I’m fairly sure a fire starting in the kitchen of a mosque wouldn’t be a hate crime either.

Yeah searched church arson came back with one result which is this thread. LInk all the threads you found please.

Lol. No idea who you think you are but ‘nope’.
(You just need to learn how to use advanced search correctly. There is a guide somewhere on MN).

Uggbootsforever · 05/10/2025 16:41

YANBU, this should be a higher news priority and yes I think it would be if it were a church/synagogue

They're obviously on the wind-up.

HappyGolmore2 · 05/10/2025 16:47

In the hierarchy of news, murder obvs come higher than arson or arson/attempted murder but still, why is this not terror when the stabbings were?

1457bloom · 05/10/2025 16:49

Muslims must be terrified now but I’m sure Starmer will provide extra police to protect their mosques and schools.

Maybe if police hadn’t been so busy with protest marches it wouldn’t have happened. More police presence is needed on our streets not at protest marches.

This is lame.

Really lame.

In fairness I did see a photo of four police officers in London all spending their time arresting one elderly woman walking with a stick. Seems a bit excessive in my view

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 05/10/2025 16:54

I'm somewhat nonplussed by the claim that arson attacks are treated more seriously when churches are the target. It happens all the time, but it rarely gets reported more widely than the local press. Same for vandals smashing stained glass windows.

My local church ended up paying for protective mesh to be fitted on the outside of the windows, after repeated incidents.

JHound · 05/10/2025 16:55

JustSawJohnny · 05/10/2025 13:32

I do find it frustrating that when a white person attacks multiple people it's never terrorism. Seems like a brown face is required for terror, in the eyes of the media.

That said, I don't think this is terrorism as nobody was physically attacked. If they'd ran in with petrol bombs to start the fire in the middle of prayer, that would be terrorism.

I often think that when I see any mass shooting in the US as to how it’s classified. The bar for terrorism is very high for white perpetrators to be seen as terrorists (the IRA) but very low for brown people (just be brown, have a dodgy internet search or say “God is great” and that will do it.)

However personally I am still waiting to see a motive for this attack.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 05/10/2025 16:57

For something to be a classified as a terrorist attack there has to be a recognised political and/or religious ideology attached to the motive and a provable allegiance to a group formed for the specific purpose of targeting the community or the state or the organisation they see as their enemies. Otherwise it's just one arsehole attacking someone or something they don't like.

As far as I know there are no formally recognised terror groups in the UK at the moment that target mosques or muslims. And if there are, then the police have not been able to make that link in this specific case.

Which organisation was the guy who attacked the synagogue a part of?

It’s still lame to suggest that people choosing to protest are the reason police were not on hand to prevent this arson attempt.

PeaceReacher · 05/10/2025 17:10

PraisebetoGod · 05/10/2025 12:37

What is unchristian about my view? I don't condone any arson attacks on any places of worship. Perhaps the point I was trying to make wasn't very clear. Why is this making the news at all when churches suffer the same, and at a higher rate*? Don't you think there's something suspicious about that? Is a mosque more important? Why has this one incident been highlighted - why now?

*Muslim census and MEND 2022 found 4 mosques had arson attacks in the previous 3 years vs 150 churches in the five years leading up to 2022.

Tell MAMA reports that between June and September 2025, 17 mosques or Islamic institutions were targeted with attacks.

Yes I know, people have every right to protest (for now at least!). I’m not blaming them for this arson incident at all!

1457bloom · 05/10/2025 17:12

The term terrorism is now so misused it is meaningless.

Which organisation was the guy who attacked the synagogue a part of?

He and his father are known supporters of Hamas and the anti-Israel cause. And as others have pointed out, if there was no evidence to label Axel Rudakabana as a terrorist then if this man was named as a terrorist by the police them presumably they found evidence to lead them to that conclusion. Police investigating this man led to the arrest of several others I believe, Several so there must have been some sort of organised element to it.
