Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

Would appreciate views on whether or not I am being unreasonable in thinking en-suite facilities are not acceptable.

We have paid £440 for a weekend break in the UK. I am not happy and asked to move rooms but was told not possible as fully booked.

Don't know if I am being unreasonable and others would find this shower room acceptable or I am not being unreasonable and it is not what others would expect.

Currently away for the weekend, is this acceptable?

Unless your husband can 100% state that he wasn’t told at the time of booking then I would bet he was told at the time and just didn’t think it was a big deal, not being able to recall being told usually means someone forgot they were but now they actually do remember and know that they probably should have checked with whoever else was going if it would be ok.
I can picture it now as my DH would do that the same…
”Sorry Sir, the only room left available doesn’t have a free standing bath etc but a fully accessible bathroom”
DH- “Yeah that sounds fine” (or equivalent)

My DH doesn’t bath, he only ever uses a shower so wouldn’t have thought about it, he would have just been on the mission to book and job done.
As long as it’s clean it wouldn’t bother me too much, I wouldn’t let it ruin the weekend but I can see why you are a little disappointed having envisaged something else.

You have a husband problem, not a hotel en suite problem.

Yay, straight to the point. Mumsnet!

I’m with you OP, it looks rather crappy and basic. And shower curtains are gross, especially ones that have been tied to a toilet cistern 🤮

Booking over the phone seems a pretty unusual move these days. Have you got a written confirmation of the booking that includes a description of the bathroom / mention of a bath? If not, then I guess you’ll have to chalk this one up to experience.

Why is a shower curtain gross? Seriously I don't get what the problem is?

Tillygan60 · 05/10/2025 06:37

I'd not be happy, I love a bath!
I only book online and always take a screenshot of the room and its facilities as I book...that way if anything doesn't match up you have proof of what you paid for.

£220 per night is not cheap?

It seems that poster wanted a dig at the op @DBD1975 and remind her apparently £220 per night is low end money for a hotel. When in reality for a lot of us it’s a lot of money!

Op Even if you book by phone you would normally get asked for email address to get confirmation of the booking. Ask your husband because it sounds like they told him, he didn’t listen or didn’t really care and is now just ‘not remembering’.

Darner · 05/10/2025 06:42

I’m with you, OP. That is one nasty bathroom. I’d have left and insisted on a refund if they couldn’t put you in a better room with the bathroom, you were expecting.

ProfessionalPirate · 05/10/2025 06:48

Why do people assume that photos on a website show 100% of every type of hotel rooms and facilities, sure a Premier Inn i would assume most are the same but not all hotels show every bit

If a room says specifically the room i book had a bath in the bathroom and the room doesn't that would be false advertising of there is nothing in the small print or hotel details but not all rooms may habe the same facilities or look the same

If I was set on certain things i would make specific contact with the hotel direct to check

I want clean and functional i dont care if it has a bath or not so wouldn't care enough to check

The photos don’t need to be identical but they do need to be representative. Would you also not care if the bedroom itself was purely functional, and fitted out like uni halls of residence? When the hotel website showed stylish and luxurious photos?

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 05/10/2025 06:53

I strongly suspect that your husband was told on the phone at the time of booking given that’s their policy and he didn’t know what that meant in reality so just said fine.

Either way the fact that he can’t remember whether he was told (is it on a confirmation email?) means you can’t really start demanding refunds. I suppose you could suggest they reduce the cost or give you a bottle of something in compensation instead.

In any event I would just try to get over it and enjoy yourself unless your weekend was designed around being in a bath.

ACynicalDad · 05/10/2025 06:55

It’s really important they have accessible bathrooms. They won’t always be filled with disabled people. I’d be fine and if probably think I’m grateful that I don’t need it.

JenXWarrior · 05/10/2025 06:57

Hullopalloo · 05/10/2025 03:30

To me its horrible. Id be furious. It looks like a cheap accessible bathroom. Not luxury in the least.

I know, all these bathroom apologists are ridiculous. I'd be fuming as well.

If they'd been given a wooden shack in the garden because they were fully booked that'd be ok as well with plenty of 'just crack on OP' comments.

TheChosenTwo · 05/10/2025 06:58

It’s not that I find it unacceptable but it’s not luxury. Looks like a clean accessible bathroom with no frills (although don’t accessible bathrooms need emergency pull cords? I can’t see one!). What’s your actual room like?

I’ve come away for work this weekend, I chose my hotel room and work booked it - I chose quite a nice room with a king sized bed and the room is pretty small with a double bed. I checked at the desk and they said there wasn’t availability for the room I had booked! Not the end of the world, I don’t technically NEED a big bed, I’m only one person, but I definitely didn’t get what had been paid for. They offered me a few drinks instead (which I politely turned down because I’m working!) - overall it’s all fine, I’m here for business not pleasure but if I were here on leisure time and planning on spending more time in my room I’d be miffed. Hope you’ve still enjoyed your time away.

Icebreakhell · 05/10/2025 06:58

It’s like a hospital facility. I wouldn’t be happy. Hotels shouldn’t let these rooms except to people who need them.

👏👏👏 Great virtue signalling

PeonyPatch · 05/10/2025 06:59

I would be annoyed too. It doesn’t look too dissimilar to bathrooms I’ve encountered in hostels. It’s not luxurious at all. And for £440, I’d be expecting better.

Blankscreen · 05/10/2025 06:59

I'd be a bit irritated but don't let it ruin your weekend away.

As long as it clean and the rest of the room is nice just try and move on and enjoy yourselves.

You’re welcome

Adelle79360 · 05/10/2025 07:08

Oh god I’ll probably be lynched for this but we’ve complained before when we’ve been given an accessible bathroom, and we’ve been moved. Of course we’re fortunate that we don’t need an accessible bathroom, but it was so soulless and we were with family in other rooms who had beautiful bathrooms and we wanted one too!

There’s nothing wrong with the bathroom in your photo per se (it looks clean etc), but I understand why you’d just want a standard bathroom.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 05/10/2025 07:12

That looks dreadful. Who else’s arse has stuck to that shower curtain 🤢
Very odd to be booking a room over the phone these days.

ProfessionalPirate · 05/10/2025 07:13

Umy15r03lcha1 · 05/10/2025 06:37

Because unlike a glass screen, they are impossible to clean sufficiently. Also unlike a screen, they have a tendency to cling to your body when you touch them, in confined spaces they can be an PIA. Whereas I can get in and out of a shower without touching a screen. Especially disgusting when they are in close proximity to a toilet. It’s a scientific fact that when a toilet is flushed it releases aerosolised sewage particles into the air. It’s called ‘toilet plume’ if you want to look into it. That’s why you should never leave your toothbrush out uncovered in the bathroom!

themerchentofvenus · 05/10/2025 07:14

@DBD1975 your voting will be skewed as you didn't put the relevant details in the first post.

If you were expecting a luxurious bathroom with tub and didnt get one then absolutely complain. Could they not move you for the second night?

I'd be wanting a hefty discount.

Were there no other nearby hotels?

Zempy · 05/10/2025 07:20

It looks like an accessible wet room.

Are you having difficulty using it? What’s the problem?

Virtue signalling much.....?

Cakeandcardio · 05/10/2025 07:21

Remember OP that all the mnetters are super cool. They will pretend they can't see anything wrong with it when it is fucking obviously not what you would have paid for / expecting. So the hotel have overbooked. Yes I would expect a part refund as you cannot have a bath. If they refuse, take to Trip Advisor

Rocknrollstar · 05/10/2025 07:26

I prefer a walk-in shower to a bath and £440 for a weekend is not going to buy luxury.

IsItSnowing · 05/10/2025 07:27

I’d be annoyed too. I don’t know why accessible bathrooms can’t be done nicely like the usual ones but they’re not.
I would also complain if it happened to me and they’d be getting the appropriate review.
I would never book over the phone though - nothing in writing means they can claim anything. I bet they never told your DH at all.
