Which changes in a product you’d liked have been the worst?

Just bought some Huggies wet wipes for the first time in a while. I use them to take makeup off, and they are the only wet wipe that are really effective. They’re thick and somehow really remove the dirt well. But they’ve changed and are now utterly, utterly shite. They’re thin and remove nothing. Why oh why do they do this? Do they not test the product in manufacturing and think ‘this is obviously a shit move’? So frustrating.

See also Ribena. Used to be a great occasional drink to soothe a sore throat, now it tastes of nothing but chemicals. Why do that?

Surely no one will buy the new Huggies Wet wipes? Surely only 10% of the old Ribena buyers still buy. What is the sense in this commercially?

Also Tesco sausages, now all gluten free and less pleasant toast and consistency. It’s a shame they couldn’t keep stocking gluten free and original. Most supermarkets have gone all gluten free for sausages, means I visit the butchers though

I know there have been whole threads on Sainsbury's vacuum packed mince which is awful. I care an awful lot about climate change but it's such a change for the worse.

And Sainsburys have also done something with their Taste the Difference sausage skins. I used to buy packs to make sausage rolls, but when I peel off the skins now it's this horrible jelly like substance. 🤢

Marmite. I panic bought during the pandemic (I know, I know, but I refused to risk running out!) and a year later when I finally got through the massive amount of jars I had bought at the start of the chaos,
I noticed that the new stuff was paler,
more brown than black, and thinner and weaker tasting too. Gutted does not begin to describe it. I’m just hoping they bring out an ‘original’ version soon!

They’ve probably reduced the salt content. I prefer Vegemite, which is less salty anyway,

zingally · 06/10/2025 10:53

The one that still gets my goat is Time Out bars!

Back when they launched, they had a lovely thick layer of Flake chocolate in the middle. I used to love carefully nibbling off the top layer of chocolate, then wafer, and scraping off the flake layer with my teeth!
Then sometime in the mid 00s they removed that flake layer, and replaced it with a thin layer of what I can only describe as chocolate dust, which tastes really fake and chemically.
They've been utterly ruined. I just don't buy them any more, whereas they used to be one of my favourites.

Right, I’ve got some shopping to do for vital research.. 👀

Hovis and Doves farm digestives (are the Dove Farm ones in standard supermarkets, or do you have to get from somewhere specific?)
Aldi and Lidl chocolate as pp said no palm oil which sounds promising

M&S big mix, smaller carton for pre-Christmas sampling 😁

Might take me longer to save up for the plane fare to NZ for proper Ribena but just a short hop to France for real Orangina! @catsmother summed it up perfectly on pg 4 I think and also mentioned Cyprus is good for real San Pelly and other nice real fruity drinks.

Food and drink hoarding tourism might become a thing! 😂

Meanwhile people will flood to the UK for our….
Our…umm….
??

It’s not all chocolate at Aldi or Lidl, that is free from palm oil - just certain brands, but you can soon find them, by looking at the contents.

I can't say I've noticed this and I shop for two coeliacs. I wish more places would do gluten free as it is still so hard to find things that aren't full of wheat and barley. I know I can cook from scratch but sometimes after a 12 hour shift I just want to throw something in the air fryer like everyone else.

Huggies thing is the plastic. You can still get the other ones. I hate the new ones with a passion.

Echoing sweetners. All fizzy drinks now contain them bar full sugar coke and appletizer. Given the new rules at nandos too it's only going to get worse.
Sweetners are unhealthy, they should be the demon not sugar!

The new Huggies all stick together so you can’t get one wetwipe out. 10 come out in a big clump. I only use them as I’m too lazy to use a far more environmentally friendly flannel, but I suppose the time has come.

Have you tried Water Wipes, OP?

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/10/2025 19:51

Instead of baby wipes, and if you can't be bothered with trying washables, please try using man size tissues with a few drops of baby lotion. Can be flushed and so much more environmentally friendly than plastic wipes.

Nooooooo, do NOT flush tissues. They are designed to be strong and not break down.

Agree with Ribena.
Cadbury's as is oft mentioned on here.
Caramac is absolutely vile now.
Jammy Dodgers.
Fairly sure NikNaks/MonsterMunch are blander than they used to be too.

Anyone know where all the dark chocolate oranges went? I can only ever find milk chocolate in the shops and it's far too sweet!

In a way it's a good thing as none of these are good for me. They do it to cut costs and make more profit which is the real joke.

Edited

Niknaks went from being knobbly caveman clubs to tiny little maggot sized pieces. It's no fun eating them anymore.

@MattDillonsEyebrows good chocolate is available, but not for £1.50 per bar. Crap in, crap out.
chocolate 30 years ago was a rare treat, not something people eat in massive amounts.
in terms of reformulation- its a case of doing the best we can under the conditions in market. sweeteners have off tastes, but no/less calories. regulatory frameworks require less sugar/salt/fat.
People want to have loads of cheap treats, not a square of chocolate on Sundays.
So we tried the best we could, but there is only so much we can do. As i said above, its very boring.

I know it's probably not your decision, but can I ask @ThisAmberOrca ; why didn't you just keep the original recipes, make them in smaller batches (and more expensive) and sell them alongside the new recipes? That means people who want a cheap fix get the newer (cheaper) recipes of the classics and those of us who actually want the good stuff will pay more for the originals as occasional treats?

isitmyturn · 08/10/2025 09:39

I have been addicted to Lidl Stem Ginger Cookies for years. Buttery cookies with chunks of ginger. I eat far too many. Yesterday I opened a new pack and they have changed. Not as buttery and almost no ginger. I am unreasonably aggrieved by this.

GellerYeller · 11/10/2025 15:37

Just opened an M and S coffee Swiss roll. They’ve replaced the buttery smooth filling with a gritty smear of coffee cream and the sponge is dry and crumbly.

FuglyBitch · 11/10/2025 15:52

This thread is so depressing, when you think about it, most things are much lower quality (planned obsolescence) or lower taste, and probably less healthy for us, feel sad that our kids have missed out on the delicious foods we’ve enjoyed

Twinings decaff Earl Grey tea. Used to be perfect, now tastes like petrol.

Have you tried Sainsbury’s TTD decaffeinated Earl Grey?

AnAudacityofinlaws · 11/10/2025 18:27

@Auburngal we don’t have Sainsbury’s locally but maybe at the express store.

I doubt the Locals sell this. As another poster said Tesco Finest. They are £2.40 for 50 v £3,60 for Twinings
