Which changes in a product you’d liked have been the worst?

Just bought some Huggies wet wipes for the first time in a while. I use them to take makeup off, and they are the only wet wipe that are really effective. They’re thick and somehow really remove the dirt well. But they’ve changed and are now utterly, utterly shite. They’re thin and remove nothing. Why oh why do they do this? Do they not test the product in manufacturing and think ‘this is obviously a shit move’? So frustrating.

See also Ribena. Used to be a great occasional drink to soothe a sore throat, now it tastes of nothing but chemicals. Why do that?

Surely no one will buy the new Huggies Wet wipes? Surely only 10% of the old Ribena buyers still buy. What is the sense in this commercially?

Tresemme conditioner. Had to switch to Elvive as it just doesnt condition at all.

Needlenardlenoo · 05/10/2025 14:36

With the drinks, they've nearly all changed formula due to the sugar tax, haven't they?

We "import" proper sugary Orangina from France and I was horrified this summer to see a "sans sucre" version on the shelves. Noooo!

@BlueandWhitePorcelain

Don't put yourself through it with the Twiglets. They are so bad.

Thebigonesgetaway · 05/10/2025 14:56

Laura mercier Ambre and vanille body soufflé/lotion. Absolutely loved that stuff, bought it for years, then they reformulated and it’s crap bought a pot, didn’t even finish it, Just binned it and moved on sadly.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 05/10/2025 14:58

L’occitane Shea hand cream used to be fantastic and the only thing that saved my hands in winter. Now it smells horrible and doesn’t work. I haven’t found anything to replace it

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 05/10/2025 15:00

Companies making chewy, gummy sweets vegan. It has changed the quality and texture of them completely. Rowntree's Fruit Gums come instantly to mind, but a lot of them have done it. I'm annoyed they pandered to a small minority. It has ruined the sweets completely.
I know I'm a woman in my 50s who probably shouldn't eat sweets, but, as a lifetime lover of them, I feel annoyed that they've done this.

Triflingjelly · 05/10/2025 15:06

Niche, but I used to love M and S tinned tomato and basil soup, particularly at this time of year. Now they've changed it to an improved recipe removing the basil altogether and replacing with balsamic vinegar. Just yuck. I don't like balsamic vinegar.

Also M&S cheese puffs dont taste of anything now. Before this thread I thought it was my aging taste buds. See also Twiglets. Thank you OP.

Irn bru isn't the same. I don't usually drink ginger, but I loved irn bru

‘Ginger’ how to spot a fellow Glaswegian

I wrote myself a diary note for early September not to buy any of the tins of roses / celebrations/ heroes / Quality Street as I ended up throwing some of all away last year! In our house that's pretty unbelievable!

I knew they were no longer like they were in the 'good old days' but wow, whatever they've done to them in recent years is an abomination!

I've bought the large Big Mix tin from m&s instead. Fingers crossed they taste better! At least they're in an actual tin for a start!

We changed to different flavours of Lindt Lindor last year, just bought several cartons of them and then had them in a lovely glass bowl - so much nicer (looked nicer too).
Mind you, my mum then went and bought us a big tin of Quality Street, so we still ended up with them - at least we got the tin to use for something else, I guess!

Yes Rowntrees fruit gums are an abomination, they used to be really hard and last for ages now they are soft and squidgy revolting things.

Theresabatinmykitchen · 05/10/2025 15:32

McVities digestive biscuits are another abomination, they are now pale anaemic utterly tasteless pieces of dryness, they used to be a lovely deep golden brown and actually taste of wheat, I’ve switched to Hovis which are better but for how long?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/10/2025 15:34

I can only comment on size of things, rather than taste, because I'm very aware that my sense of taste has changed a LOT since I was a child. So things I used to love then (even things that haven't changed recipe) I don't like now. And vice versa - I used to hate salted peanuts that had too much salt on. Now they all seem to have less salt, and I prefer it!

But if Freddo Frogs get any smaller they are going to have to sell a hand lens with each one just so you can see it to unwrap it.

Thereshegoesagain · 05/10/2025 15:36

Daily Milk is no longer allowed to call itself chocolate because the amount of cacao they use is too low to be classed as chocolate.
Look at the packaging.
Doesn't say chocolate anywhere.

I know! I've complained to them on Twitter a couple of times but they're standing firm on their decision. I don't understand their thinking because I reckon a lot of people must be turned off by the new texture! They're just nasty now!

Good idea - they have managed to ruin Quality Street. Every year, I mentally make a note not to buy them and still do.

We all like Lindt Lindors though - must buy those instead!

Peridoteage · 05/10/2025 16:47

I hate the way the response to sugar tax has been to pile everything full of sweeteners, which taste shite and I don't want to give to my children.

Why can't things just be.... less sweet

Last year they had some pretty good deals in November - the only challenge was not opening the boxes until December! Ha ha!

Readyforslippers · 05/10/2025 17:05

Crunchy ice cream used to have little balls of honeycomb in, now they've got that horrible popping candy stuff and I really dislike it.

Takersgonnatake · 05/10/2025 17:11

I haven’t bought Ribena in a few years now, it tastes vile and sweeteners disagree with me. I mostly drink filtered water but sometimes I want a treat, I’m an adult with all my own teeth and full capacity which means I’m allowed to make my own decisions even if other disagree with them, so why can’t I have proper sugar in my cordials? I’m happy to pay the sugar tax, just give me a decent drink! I’ve tried Rocks, it’s ok but weaker than Ribena used to be. One thing I have found, for some reason Polish squash is full sugar. Try the Polish section in Tesco. You can also get fruity and sugary squash in most Asian supermarkets, the flavours can be random but the sour cherry is usually reliably good!

Omg. This.

M&S have ruined all their sweets for me. I used to love Percy pigs, always had a bag at home. They are inedible now. My kids eat them but they have no idea what they're missing out on.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 05/10/2025 17:30

Ribena now tastes of nothing, just faintly of sweetener - heartbreaking

Wotsits and Skips also just taste of sweetener now. Tried them both recently and they were horrible! Wotsits especially used to be so melty and cheesy, now weird and crispy and sweet.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 05/10/2025 17:50

Just thought of another one - well, it's more of a 'standard' thing now - what have all of the crisp companies done to salt and vinegar flavoured crisps? They've all gone ridiculously sour, kind of like they're using citric acid instead of salt and vinegar flavour. It used to be my favourite flavour, but now they're almost inedible. Maybe it's just my tastebuds though?!

PauliesWalnuts · 05/10/2025 17:51

Salt and vinegar Discos taste so chemically now - absolutely inedible. Fun fact - before we made our first communion we used to play “nuns and priests” in the playground at primary school and used to use a bag of Discos as communion wafers 😁

lightand · 05/10/2025 17:52

Good question.

Ribena for me too.
