Which changes in a product you’d liked have been the worst?

Just bought some Huggies wet wipes for the first time in a while. I use them to take makeup off, and they are the only wet wipe that are really effective. They’re thick and somehow really remove the dirt well. But they’ve changed and are now utterly, utterly shite. They’re thin and remove nothing. Why oh why do they do this? Do they not test the product in manufacturing and think ‘this is obviously a shit move’? So frustrating.

See also Ribena. Used to be a great occasional drink to soothe a sore throat, now it tastes of nothing but chemicals. Why do that?

Surely no one will buy the new Huggies Wet wipes? Surely only 10% of the old Ribena buyers still buy. What is the sense in this commercially?

When products have unnecessary gluten added when previously they had been safe for me. Looking at you in particular Aldi with homestyle chips (now got wheat) and sushi snack packs (wheat added recently) and you Heinz (beans and sausages ruined by gluten). DS also has a restricted diet (suspect ARFID) and loved the Aldi chips but I can't even get them for him now because they will contaminate the air fryer 😡

I wrote myself a diary note for early September not to buy any of the tins of roses / celebrations/ heroes / Quality Street as I ended up throwing some of all away last year! In our house that's pretty unbelievable!

I knew they were no longer like they were in the 'good old days' but wow, whatever they've done to them in recent years is an abomination!

I've bought the large Big Mix tin from m&s instead. Fingers crossed they taste better! At least they're in an actual tin for a start!

Can you sneak a couple @Smileybutwily and report back here?

That sounds like could be a good alternative for Christmas if the M&S ones are actually nice!

JohnTheRevelator · 05/10/2025 18:11

As soon as I see the words 'New,improved recipe' or 'New,improved formula' on a loved product,my heart sinks. It's just their way of saying 'This is now a pile of shite'.

McVities digestive biscuits are another abomination, they are now pale anaemic utterly tasteless pieces of dryness, they used to be a lovely deep golden brown and actually taste of wheat, I’ve switched to Hovis which are better but for how long?

Thanks for this tip, I’ll try the Hovis ones. Digestives definitely not what they were with the plain and I got a packet of chocolate ones last week but they were so sickly sweet and behind that the horrible powdery taste of uncooked flour 🤢

Tesco own brand dark chocolate digestives are so much better .
Crisper biscuit and a nice 'snap'

With the drinks, they've nearly all changed formula due to the sugar tax, haven't they?

We "import" proper sugary Orangina from France and I was horrified this summer to see a "sans sucre" version on the shelves. Noooo!

Yes; but why can't they just do full sugar/sweetener free versions that cost more? I'd happily pay extra.
Instead they've removed the choice 😔

OodlesTheTalkingPoodle · 05/10/2025 20:44

I'm pretty surprised to see people prefer hard, tough sweets. I much prefer the soft chewy versions - less likely to rip my fillings out.

Snowdropsaremyfavourite · 05/10/2025 20:47

Birds Eye prawn curry. They changed the recipe and it was totally different to the original. I'm not even sure if they make it anymore, haven't seen it in years. There was a time when I lived off the stuff 😋

Buy a small air fryer to do them separately in?

YSL foundation and green teddy Haribo.

Lol! As much as I would like that responsibility, my will power just won't allow me! Once that wrapping is off there's no way they would last until December!

If it helps they do sell a much smaller carton of them, so may be they can be for your tasting research?!

Carandache18 · 05/10/2025 22:43

It's fake sugar and palm oil that's ruined most things. I can always taste the fishy taste in palm oil, but dd says it tastes of dead orang utans.

Chickydoo · 05/10/2025 22:45

Neals Yard Lavender bath salts. They have halved the size and upped the price & the Jar is only half full when you open it 😢

Lampzade · 05/10/2025 22:48

Mac Studio fix powder foundation . They have removed the talc from the product and increased the price . The product is not as long lasting as it once was
Have been using this product for many years but have stopped

Removing talc makes the product safer though so I think that one is fair enough.

Same here! I have a tin of Big Mix all ready for Xmas. It's certainly big and I love the proper tin. I have high hopes!

Crumbelina · 05/10/2025 23:09

Ok completely agree about Huggies, OP. They're awful! So much thinner and so difficult to get out of the packet. I've stopped buying them and have yet to find a decent replacement.

I hate that Laura Mercier have changed their tinted moisturiser. The new formulation is thicker and I can't get a decent colour match. Sigh ...

LightDrizzle · 05/10/2025 23:34

Aveda Purple Shampoo and Conditioner for blonde hair. They changed it a few years ago and the “new” formula leaves an unpleasant residue so I ditched it after years of loyalty.

I'll agree about Hovis digestives, and the Doves Farm ones are really good too 👍

I'm going back a while, but I loved the original Body Shop banana conditioner and was gutted when it was discontinued. When I found out they were bringing it back a few years later I bought a bottle as soon as I could and of course it had been changed and was shit.

The scent of original green Fairy Liquid.

100%. I was really upset as the original always reminded me of helping my granda was up after Sunday teatime.
New and Improved like heck!

Ivesaidenough · 05/10/2025 23:46

This is properly niche but Coco di mamma used to do the most delicious pesto pasta I've ever tasted.
They've made it vegan. It's horrible.

swimsong · 06/10/2025 01:05

Snappies dog poo bags.

Went from being the best. Flat pocket size bag, individually folded. Decent thickness. Still thick now - but bag twice the size and all folded together. Crap, gone back to rolls - even though they're thinner and unravel easily and annoyingly.

IlovetoKnitandRead · 06/10/2025 09:08

I was going to mention the Doves Farm digestives too. They taste like Mcvities from the good ole days.

Notfeelinit · 06/10/2025 09:38

Right, I’ve got some shopping to do for vital research.. 👀

Hovis and Doves farm digestives (are the Dove Farm ones in standard supermarkets, or do you have to get from somewhere specific?)
Aldi and Lidl chocolate as pp said no palm oil which sounds promising

M&S big mix, smaller carton for pre-Christmas sampling 😁

Might take me longer to save up for the plane fare to NZ for proper Ribena but just a short hop to France for real Orangina! @catsmother summed it up perfectly on pg 4 I think and also mentioned Cyprus is good for real San Pelly and other nice real fruity drinks.

Food and drink hoarding tourism might become a thing! 😂

Meanwhile people will flood to the UK for our….
Our…umm….

Rowntrees chocolate. Nestle is so bland in comparison. Most of the sweets of my childhood are now smaller and more synthetic
