Young couple who have 2dc half the time (and no plans for any more!)…5bed house…is it a waste? YABU=yes ridiculous YANBU=no, each to their own.

I’m sure they have assessed the need and their finances to decide if it’s needed. The other bedrooms could be used as an office/guest room/storage/hobby room. Or they might have just liked the house enough that the amount of bedrooms was irrelevant.

ClassicalQueen · 04/10/2025 21:03

We have more bedrooms than people in the home, same setup except DC live with us permanently. One bedroom is used as an office and the other as a guest room used regularly as family and friends live out of the area.

Kendodd · 04/10/2025 21:04

I have a big detached farmhouse style place plus a courtyard of barns and dream of living in a van with almost zero stuff. I think my dreams are unusual though.

myavocadoisgrowing · 04/10/2025 21:01

And why should they?

I get totally pissed off with people who think everyone should live in a fucking shoebox. We have a 4 bed house, kids left home, semi retired.

should we move to a poxy bungalow to free up the home we’ve made over donkeys years? Piss off.

it’s none of your fucking business.

Well said! I totally agree.

BoarBrush · 04/10/2025 21:21

We're soon moving from a 3 bed to a 4 bed, the new neighbours kid (her house is mirror image) came over today and was absolutely stunned we're moving from such a big house. Everything's U shaped so the house has so much light which probably makes it feel much bigger and rooms are big due to the stairs /hall set up. There is not one single cupboard in the new house except the boiler cupboard, I could sure do with a spare room or six for the hoover, school bags, my shoe/coat cupboard(that I'll miss the most) and suitcase storage

Agapornis · 04/10/2025 21:29

We have technically a 4 bed for 2 people. In reality it's 2 bedrooms, 1 office, 1 living room 🤷
I'd quite like another bedroom so we could have a hobby space and second office. If I had 50-80k spare I'd get a loft conversion.

XenoBitch · 04/10/2025 22:44

I live alone in a 3 bed house. Never had kids. Every room is utilised, just not as bedrooms (apart from the one I sleep in).

XenoBitch · 04/10/2025 22:54

Also, your poll is really confusing.

randomchap · 05/10/2025 00:12

How are you defining waste? If they can afford it and are happy how is it wasteful?

It's not you or your house, how is it affecting you?

What are the other rooms used for? Guests? Or hobbies that bring you joy?

We have a 5 bed with 2dc, we use all the space in the house. I’m curious, what’s it to you?

Snap. OP sounds insanely jealous.

5foot5 · 05/10/2025 00:30

Just DH and I now in a 4 bedroom house.

Occasionally we have guests and at least twice a year we will need two guest bedrooms at once.

Don't see how we could manage with less.
Bedroom 1: Our room
Bedroom 2: Main guest room
Bedroom 3: Secondary guest room and also the room with the model railway layout. Everyone has to have a hobby.
Bedroom 4:Where other stuff is kept. Can be pressed in to service as an additional guest room if we really need to but that has only happened a handful of times.

TBH if we had a 5th bedroom I could easily use it as a craft or sewing room.

A craft room and a home office, although that is more a storage room now... for my craft stuff 😂

TattooStan · 05/10/2025 07:40

We've got 4 double bedrooms between 2 of us. No kids, and only the occassional overnight guest.

We've got our bedroom, a spare room and an office/hobby room each.

Our mortgage is cheap and we are hugely undercommitted financially. It's great!

It also doesn't add to the cleaning workload as, because we've got lots of space, we don't have any clutter.

whatsit84 · 05/10/2025 11:59

I have a 7 bedroom house and two DC who share a room 😂. 2 bedrooms used by us, a dressing room, playroom, two offices and a guest bedroom used frequently.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 05/10/2025 12:26

We have 1 child and a 5 bed, it’s perfect for us.

carpedaim · 05/10/2025 12:30

Elderly parents and in-laws both have 5-bedroom houses. Comes in handy for family get-togethers & Christmas 🙂

ParmaVioletTea · 05/10/2025 12:33

If they can afford it from their income (with no state help), then why not?
Parents' bedroom
Bedroom for each child
Study
Guest room

JHound · 05/10/2025 12:38

My friend is a single woman, no kids and she has just purchased herself a 4 bedroom home which I think is fine.

So no, I don’t think buying a 5 bedroom home for 2 with kids their half the time is a waste.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 05/10/2025 12:40

I know several people who live alone or as a couple in four bedroom houses with home office, big garden etc. It’s called having money.

Ek1234 · 05/10/2025 13:01

We have a 5 bed house. 2 Adults both WFH and 2dc. We have one downstairs office and have converted one of the bedrooms, so that gives us 1 spare bedroom for guests. The house doesn't seem too big in our circumstances.

sammylady37 · 05/10/2025 13:01

I’m single and childfree, and bought a 4 bed detached house. I converted one bedroom to a cloakroom, knocked two together to create a fabulous master suite with en-suite and walk in wardrobe, and I have one guest room.

there were two reception rooms, one of which is now multi-functional, it has a sofa bed if that’s needed, it’s an office, it’s where I exercise, it absorbs a lot of clutter and hobby stuff.

I’ve made my house perfect for me and my needs.

WallLight · 05/10/2025 13:05

There’s only DH and I and our teenager living in our 5-bedroom house. It hadn’t occur to me that this needed to be justified. We have people to stay a lot, and use two of the bedrooms as studies, so it’s not as though we’re rattling around.

FirstdatesFred · 05/10/2025 13:12

I wouldn't like it because of bills, maintenance and cleaning. But if you're not worried by that then go for it

I live in a big house as well. When my kids were little all three shared one big room.
